Average income

Folks just wondering what the average income is out there. I'm in a position where I'll be changing jobs (actually changing fields - going from IT to Sales) and I'll be going from a ballpark of 40k with no benefits to ballpark 30k with benefits.

I'm 40, married, family, educated up to secondlevel & no debt apart from mortgage.

    What's your scenario ?

30k with commission (although you're not earning commission until you start selling obviously). I've just found out the basic is going up to 33k in July irrespective of service.

Not at all foxtrot, however, I don't qualify for social welfare as I was self employed for a number of years & right now I've absolutely no income (starting week five of unemployment with a grand total of four interviews & out of that, two have already told me no). That;'s why I'm thinking of bailing on IT. I was looking at jobs on line today & one place was looking for a degree with 4-5 years experience & offering a basic of €35k. The market seems to be absolutely screwed right now & although I've got 12+ years hands on, I've no qualifications.

    that's pants!:(
I'd take experience over qualifications any day! I recruit poeple a lot and I always prefer to see work experience on a cv than qualifications! That said I don't work in a specialised area so it depends on the type of job i 'spose....

iMax I think you would be over qualified to work in my game tbh!
I'd hold out if I was you, although I know time is money etc..

People should be looking at the median salary level not average

I would have thought that the times were changing in favour of hard working folk? I feckin hated the last few years, where far too many people freeloaded their way to their pay cheque.

It seems strange to go from steady job to sales at 40, but each to their own. I'm glad I got out of it early, and I won't say I'd a bad experience, as it gave me a load of experience.

If you were starting on €30k, I'd look into the actual potential earnings i.e. how much product are you likely to sell in your first 3, 6, 12 months, and how much will that equate to in commission. Some sales positions will play nice with a view to keeping their staff for longer than the 1 - 3 year average. Some will hire staff knowing that the turnover will be high, therefore the commission can be low.

    Best o luck though!

When I was in sales, I was 21, with a 3rd level degree, on €33k basic, with average commission of €700 per month.

yeh, good point, but in the context of the thread it sounds like the OP has a lot to offer (skills & experience) but 30K is his best offer so far?

Have been working for the past 8 years on 15K a year without any benefits, with a rotating roster over the seven day - week, I am 36, have family and rent a house. Imagine that .......... but the government want to make sure that I " do my time" like that for another 10 years. Most of the immigrants are kept in such a limbo and exploited by the employers like this, if they blow the whislte they face the prospect of having to lose the job and thence leave the country. The government does not allow us to change the job as it requires getting new work permit with the new job and they say no to it all the time. Imagine having to go through all of that, and at the end of the day some people call you scavengers ????

Pretty average wage, though I only started this job in January and apparently the raises are pretty sweet. Could be getting one in the next month or two.

Average wage? Not for a journalist in this country... I also worked in the sector for a while and have an honours MA in journalism (fat fukking lot of good it did me).

Christ this thread is depressing... :(

Tis aussie dollars alright. And yeah the cost of living over here is cheaper than at home so it's good for me. I live comfortably and still save a third of my wages every week.

If you have a background in IT and want to move to Sales, there are pelnty of well paying jobs out there. If you build up 3-5 years of sales experience you should be aiming for 100k inc commission. 30k Basic and 30k commission sounds pretty good for your first sales job, who is it with? Any job like this you are expected to hit your target, which means you are expected to earn 60k over the year. Even if you do not do well you should still pull 45-50l

I work for a major software sales company, send me your cv I'll pass it on if you want....

    24/Motor Sales/Leaving Cert./€30k - €35k

Although my salary can vary all over the place due to commission and at the moment, times are a bit tough!

Actually, I am looking to get out of sales but I haven't a clue where to go. I've no qualifications. I've been working in sales for nearly 6 years. The first few were in retail sales and now in motor sales. Any advice?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,705 ✭✭✭✭Tigger

motor sales is crap money always has been
if you aren't happy with your job you should spent 8 hours a week trying to get a job that you would be happy with. thats training or job hunting

For something like salaries/wages, the distribution is not symmetrical therefore the average will give a skewed result. The median gives a value that you will be able to say you are in the bottom 50(ish)% or the top 50(ish)%.

21.58% of the entire workforce earn OVER 35.4k, and the rest 78.42% earn UNDER 35.4k, thats a fact from the govt:) http://www.budget.gov.ie/2008/downloads/DistributionOfIncome.pdf

So most boardies here are allegedly in the 'top elite' of earners :)
