Summer Jobs - Young Teen

    Hi,

I'm 15 years old, I have no previous experience in a working position and basically my mam wants me to get out and get some sort of job and I want to earn myself a little chunk to stick in the bank by the end of the summer. I have my Junior Cert until mid June, then I'm away from mid-July til the end of July. I'll be able to work Wednesday evenings and weekends during my next year because I'll be in Transition Year and also I'm willing to work for €6.04 an hour, I think that's the minimum for my age.

Basically, there are no jobs in my area in shops but can anyone tell me if:

    1) I would be allowed to work in a pub and WOULD I be able to find work in a pub just picking up glasses, cleaning up and such.

    2) I would be able to work in Blanchardstown either, would shops such as Foot Locker or Lifestyle take someone of my age on? Maybe HMV or Zaffi?

    3) How about the cinema, would they take me on if I brought in a CV?

    Thanks for any replies.

    Conor

P.s. if anybody has any offers, just gimme a shout by private message :p

Both HMV and Zaffi are 18+ as far as i can remember. My local cinema only hire 18+ too. Pubs and restaurants, supermarkets, newsagents etc are your best bet to be honest.

I think you could work in a pub collecting glasses but you couldnt serve drinks behind the bar. And the only way to find out if the cinema or shops will take you on is to walk in with a CV and ask. Thats always the best way.

Why dont you try golf clubs.Busiest time of year for them . Lots of them look for students during the summer. Good luck.

Thanks for the prompt replies guys. I've never seen anyone of my age working at the cinema in Blanchardstown though? Do they accept applications, I'll go in and check someday.

I would absolutely love work at the airport in any way, even just working in a shop. Its in my vicinity, close enough, bus straight to arrivals like. So, does anyone know any work I could get there?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 228 ✭✭conormurphy

Also, I'm pretty slick with photoshop if I do say so myself. Sold some of my work, made about €100 in total I suppose but that was over time, it was really hard to get consistent work like so if anyone needs help in that area, get at me

There's a girl who works in spar in blanchardstown and I swear she looks no more than 13. Maybe give them a try.

Haha thanks, all of them look 13 though:D

Is there any listings or anything for summer jobs for my age or anything does anyone know? Anyone know how to get something quick?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 314 ✭✭buckfast4me

Don't think there is listings, what you are better off doing is printing about 10-15 CVs out and just walk around the different shops in Blanchardstown centre dropping them in. It's also best to ask for a manager to hand it to personally, because some of the staff might just throw it anywhere. Try to look neat aswell, first impressions are everything and good luck with the search!

While there is a national minimum wage of €8.65 per hour in place in Ireland, this does not mean that everyone is automatically entitled to receive this. Young people aged under 18 are only guaranteed up to 70% of the national minimum wage which is €6.06 per hour. Your employer is, of course, free to pay you more than the minimum wage if they wish, but you should be aware that they are not required to do so by law.

I remember going through this when I was 15. Hardly anywhere will hire you under 16 due to laws around how many hours you can work.
You could try something like leaflet dropping if the shops don't work out.

Conor, you've very little chance of getting work besides glass collecting/wash-up at 15 - people here are well meaning but they're giving you the wrong impression. As I said, glass-collecting/wash-up are the only things to go for right now. And it still might not be easy to get such work. However you do seem very mature and it's great that you're not using that textspeak shyte (I saw someone nearly 25 years older than you using it on another thread...)
    When will you be 16?

    And here's a sample CV:

    Name: Conor Murphy
    Address:
    Telephone:
    Email:

    EDUCATION
I have just completed my Junior Certificate (or I will complete my Junior Certificate in June - whichever, depending on the time of application). I studied x subjects at higher level, x subjects at ordinary level.

    WORK EXPERIENCE
Have you done anything at all for which you've received payment? E.g. babysitting, chores etc? If so, you might as well mention them.

    HOBBIES AND INTERESTS

    ACHIEVEMENTS/PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
Anything you've achieved at school, on the sports field etc - list it.
And what positive attributes do you have? E.g. punctuality, communication skills, ability to work as part of a team etc.

    REFEREES

Thanks a million for the reply. Well actually I'm not 16 until April 3rd next year unfortunately, but I'll try the glass collecting. I don't care what they pay me, minimum for my age is grand by my standards because I've never worked before. A friend of mine worked in Fraziers on O'Connell street last summer and he's going back again but he is about 8 months older than me. I might try a pub.

    Thanks for the replies

Pubs, hotels (for both glass collecting and wash-up), restaurants/cafés (for wash-up). So you've more than enough scope there. Best of luck...

Just to be aware that there are restrictions on the hours you can work when you are under 16

8 hours max during school term and you are also not allowed to work before 6am and after 10pm.

Best of luck with whatever you go for.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Any idea if school term includes transition year? Although eight hours a week for the whole of TY wouldn't be bad.

And Conor, when you're handing out your CVs, see if you can speak to someone senior - your CV might not go far if you just hand it to anyone. Best to speak with someone in a management/supervisory position and even have a quick chat with them - telling them about yourself etc.

Plus, even though your mate's eight months older than you, he would have only been the age you are now, if not slightly younger, when he got that job with Frazers, so no harm in getting on to them.

Well he knows the boss and he was on €10 an hour, i think the same as the people as he was working with.

I will try some pubs and such though. Thanks for the replies

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Take a leaf out of his book: use any contacts you have too. No obvious ones might spring to mind immediately but if you think hard enough you might come up with some connections.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,103 ✭✭✭estebancambias

Yeah Conor, as Dudess said talk directly to the manager and explain your situation, what happens is if you hand your CV. in to a lad behind a counter or whatever, there is two things that could happen, either 1.) They take it with the full intentions of giving the CV., but perhaps put it down into an underneath storage space(from experience) and forget completely about it. 2.) They might feel that hiring more staff will put them under threat, so they purposely just throw away the CV.

For number 2 most people aren't like that but I'm sure it can happen.

Also if you don't talk to the manager then once they see your under 16, you really have very little chance.

The problem with Ireland is that jobs are very formal. As I told you in the PM, I worked for a summer with a carpenter but I also had a job CYCLING with deliveries for a local food place....in some countries this would not be considered strange but is very rare here!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 228 ✭✭conormurphy

Thanks again for the replies. From what I understand, the local Spar manager only lets youngsters work for 3 hours, 3 days a week and pays €60 for that work so like, I think I'll try some pubs. I'll go in some day when the pub is likely to be quiet and give it a try

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,103 ✭✭✭estebancambias

Man, jump at that job with open arms.....surely 60 euro is grand for someone of your age?

It will also look good on a future CV, and might offer you a chance of employment when you reach the right age.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 228 ✭✭conormurphy

Thing is, I dont think he's hiring, he let off a different friend lately whos mam actually works in the shop so I think im gonna try a pub. That'd be a good experience too hopefully.

i wouldnt worry about the CV at your age to be honest. Once you can hold a job for x length of time that will be good enough for it.

The most important thing is the people you will be working with. If you can find somewhere with a few people your age then you will enjoy your job. Thats the most important thing.

Right conor if you're interested in Leisureplex it's well worth dropping a CV in their. The only thing I'll say is that you have to be willing to work otherwise you will hate the manager. If you put in your fair share ( which isn;t exactly too taxing) and have the right attitude there you'll have an easy time..

They're usually looking for party hosts which is a decent enough job. You won't get much more than 6.50€ an hour plus tips off parents of the kids who's party you run but the staff there are sound and as long as u do your work it's a bit of a laugh. Avoid working in the zoo like the plague if your gonna be in there for the whole summer... good few birds working in there is the advantage but apart from that it doesn't have much else going for it

    That's a joke tbh.

Do the zoo take on 15 year olds? Also, who will I give the cv to in Leisureplex? That's good money in my opinion and also, how many days a week and how many hours do you work? I don't mind

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 228 ✭✭conormurphy

Oh I understand now, the zoo in Leisure Plex,to be honest I'm ok with working there. If I make money I'm happy for now anyway:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,386 ✭✭✭Attol

    That's a joke tbh.

One of the problems with working in shops selling games and DVDs is the age restrictions. It's easier for an 18 year old to confidently ask for ID if they feel someone is underage. As a 16/17 year old it may be slightly more intimidating as you yourself are underage.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

When I worked in Virgin Megastore (now Zavvi) there was a 17-year-old there. Think you have to be over 18 all right though in HMV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 949 ✭✭✭LoanShark

    HI Conor,
You're only 15 You are quite possibly gonna get some of the worst jobs that are available, NOT that this a poor reflection on you, it is just the way things are..
You will be working for the next 50 years of your life and and if this EU thing comes in, you'll be working till your 70..

Is there any chance that you could start up a Small Window Cleaning(altough this might not be the best of occupations for young lads to do),
Yard Tidying business or even a Lawn Mowing Business??

I know of guys that are charging up €100 per day for this work and gettin it Cash In Hand..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,119 ✭✭✭Tails142

Hey Conor, your post about finding it difficult to get a job at 16 made me remember something.

When I was younger I worked in Tesco, a couple of people working there were 15 but told the people hiring that they were 16. Tesco wanted to see birth certs or something but they just held out and kept saying that they forgot and it would bring it in the next day. The personnel managers are usually 9 to 5 workers so you will generally get away with it for a long time as they wont be able to catch up with you. Now I know one girl got found out and was fired but sure, she had already worked the summer so I doubt it was a big deal to her.

Just something to keep in mind; it might be fraud but I doubt anyone would really care THAT much. If you cant find a job its worth a try unless you would feel uncomfortable doing it.

No offence here but surely with this so called recession in place the rules on employing under 18s should be much stricter. Particularly when its at the stage that adults can't find work and youngsters are beign hired as its cheaper.

i have an idea for you ...try a hairdressers for a saturday job they will take 15 yearolds ...my daughters friends works in a hairdresser's on a saturday and she is 15 ..you will get about 48 for the day ...you might need to do a bit of networking to get the job...i.e. where dose you gran get her hair done do you have any cousins who are hairdressers...also babysitting is an option....i worked in a hairdressers in my teens and babysat ...as they were more innocent times i spent most of my wages on sweets:p

if you are having family difficulties ..you could talk to your school guidance counselor who will put you in touch with the right social worker

    good luck
