Do you know the opening hours?

Was down there today, great machines they have charles poliquin's brand atlantis which are really good machines and benches, heavy dumbells, loads of plates and its not crowded. It opens at 7am-10pm. At only 299 for the full year or 199 for 6 months its very good value.

Is there a decent squat rack or cage Mickk? And a place to deadlift? Also where in Ballymun is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭Mickk

Yea three racks I think. Dont have a platform as such but you could do it inside a rack and they aren't the type to complain about people deadlifting unlike some gyms

I'll probably join that in September so if the price is still good. It probably won't be as busy at all as Northwood and is still near enough to the 17A!

Can you just pay as you go in?

Bringing up an old thread I know but thinking of joining this gym and wondering does it get busy? I went to the pool yesterday and apart from the class on in other lanes I had the pool to myself. :D And 299euro for 15 months is a great offer!

Its the shiznah and the gym is never very busy. Three squat racks and plenty of weights, dumbells up to 50kg, lots of benches etc. The only thing missing is enough collars for the olympic bars.

The pool does get busy though on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday as you would expect.

edit to add, they dont mind chalk.

Opposite the Police station on the Ballymun road and no on the parking.

Theres on street parking nearby including at the public library. There are cctv cameras on the main street where gym is and police station on the road so safe enough by Dublin standards. Trained there today. Fairly quiet.

I know where it is now. Parking near enough to the Garda station should be safe enough alright. Thanks for the info.

Parking has been a major issue but i think it is almost sorted. There is parking under the center but there has been a dispute on who was responsible for maintaining the car park. As far as i know this is coming to an end. You can park where the old cop shop was it's pretty safe:confused:
They have a couple of new pieces of equipment arriving too i believe so happy days for anybody that is in to the weights. :D

So can we park in the underground carpark? I did not know this.

And tell me more about the new equipment pls

Not sure if we can use the parking yet, sorry. As far as i know the manager has ordered two new pieces but i'm not sure which two. They are going to be the Atlantis brand which i think (if you've used them) is the best kit I've used in a long time.;)

Yeah i use the Lat Pulldown all the time and the Leg Press every once in a while. Decent kit. I was hoping it would be some more Oly bars as they are about four or five bent now.

The staff in Ballymun are pretty good and they run a course for members on how to use equipment, i don't think they charge for it but any gym worth it's salt has to assess you and show you what's what.

Joined here last week and I have to say unless you want the use of cages, dumbells over 30Kg, aqua aerobics or the use of exercise bikes/spinning classes I would advise joining Northwood instead.

Given that both gyms are so close and are both are cheap, Northwood really is a much superior gym in nearly all aspects.

I have to say on first impression of Ballymun you would think that it isn't that bad, but soon you realise that it really does seem like it was done on the cheap.

    1) they went for LifeFitness equipment but went for the cheaper models that don't take you heart rate

    2) they went for the putting TV's on the individual piece of equipment approach however in the end they didn't put them on all the equipment, a good few are defective and then on a good few more they only have RTE one and no other channels.

3)They went for Mickk's cheapest set of weights and just got the cast iron Oly plates. Now there is nothing wrong with these plates, hell I even have a full set of them at home myself, but I would of expected a gym to go for the rubber or coloured plates

4)As far as I can tell they built the weights area on a non properly supported concrete floor and cause of this it looks like someone has already broke the floor:confused::confused:

Now that said the few times I have been up it has been pretty empty but still if it wasn't for the fact they have 3 cages Northwood would of been my 1st choice of gym in nearly every other regard

truthfully your best bet is just go up and see, from what I saw in the ballymun gym the instructors are decent so should be able to draw you up a decent plan. Also as you can just pay as you go you could just go up a few times and see if you think going to the gym is your thing

    Fair enough Joe,

I know they are getting the floor repaired soon and the TV's that were there originally had been knicked before the doors even opened. As for the Oly plates, Westwood have the same plates and it is a far busier gym. Something to mention would be when you will use the gym, i believe that Northwood is nutz in the evenings and it is a struggle to get on anything?

well it's been around 9-10 months since I have been in Northwood so my knowledge maybe slightly out dated, however at that point even though it was busy generally there was always a free piece of every type of cardio machine however even with how nuts the weights area got you weren't waiting too long for anything as they had enough multiples of everything keep things ticking. However with Ballymun they only have one bench press station so once anyone is on it you have to wait for them to finish and the same with a good bit of their equipment

Why dont you just bench in one of the power cages?

cause that is the actual reason I hate the fact that they only have the one station cause people will start using the cages to bench leaving less space for me to squat in if they start getting more members
