O2 and CPW (in UK) cut 8GB iPhone price by £100

If you're interested in an iPhone but not in O2's shocking price tariffs / contracts, now is your time to buy an iPhone up North or in the UK!

    News story here!
The iPhone is set to be cut to £169 as part of a limited offer from O2.

The £100 reduction, which will apply to the 8GB device on any O2 tariff, will take place tomorrow (Wednesday) and will run until 1 June.

It follows T-Mobile's decision to reduce the price of the handset from £315 to £78 in Germany.

With price cuts and iPhone stock reportedly running low and not being replenished in the US, France and UK, speculation is mounting about the release date of the 3G version of the device.

The price reduction follows O2's decision to increase the minutes and texts included in its £35 a month tariffs to 600 minutes and 500 texts in, up from 200 minutes and 200 texts.

The 16GB iPhone will not be included in the offer, and will remain £329.

Lads will car phone warehouse be selling these without contract up north?

that's 210 notes for an iphone!!! NICE!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,470 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

dont they normally sell them contract free then you pick a contract?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,299 ✭✭✭CantGetNoSleep

I thought they are going to be £169 on o2, they minimum monthly spend is then £35 on a contract.

They are only €99 with a contract on T-Mobile in Germany. I presume they would look for id and proof of address though

    Same.. hmm..
Now it could be because they have a tonne of them not selling because of the 3g rumours. The 3g will be announced in June.. but when it ships we don't know. It could be two weeks later or it could be august? o2 may not see this until xmas, altho most of us on here don't have a contracted iphone.

Haha thanks for that, it really is that easy?

And it will cost roughly 220 euro?

Sounds too good to be true!

Is anyone else of the opinion that if the next gen iphone only has 3G and better camera then it really isnt worth the wait?

3g means burning up your money on downloads a bit faster with the faster download speed.

The camera cant be that much of an improvement can it??

also if the offer in germany isnt over till end of june then i'm guessing the new one won't be out till july??

There really is no problem with the camera on the iphone, I don't know why people feel the need to go on about it.
    Don't knock it till you've seen/used it.
I will admit the fact that it was 2MP put me off a bit at first until I used it and saw the quality of the photos.

I wouldn't be so sure that a new model will be out in July.
What most likely is the 8GB phone is being phased out just like what they did with the 4GB one in the States.

Right so has anyone gone up North and bought one without contract?

I would be VERY interested in taking a drive up there for this deal!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,194 ✭✭✭✭Basq

I might actually be wrong in that I think only O2 are offering the deal.. and not CPW.

I don't think you can buy from O2 without a contract up North.

EDIT: Actually both O2 and CPW ARE offering the deal as they're advertising the deal on their respective websites. Still don't think it's possible without a contract. Only Apple in the UK will sell without a contract!

How much are Apple selling for in UK? Not going to be reduced to £169 by them is it?

I still can't see someone being able to get one in CPW up north with no contract, you can't do that here can you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,428 ✭✭✭randombar

Was i reading somewhere that people were doing this, you seem to be able to buy the phone online without signing any contracts but I could be wrong??

My best mate is a store manager up north in CPW and he said they were selling the odd one without a contract to people they knew. Upper management have told them to cut it out as O2 have been complaining. So I'd say it'd be hard to get one without the contract. If you can though its bad news for me as I'm selling mine on adverts to pay for a trip away!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,428 ✭✭✭randombar

    So you've a friend that's a manager eh??

    we need names?? :D

Does he know anything about buyiing online?

as for your one, I reckon dont ask too high a price any more! fella was trying to sell one for a ridiclous amount earlier and takers are getting slimmer and slimmer!

I cant really give you his name, but he works in the branch in Connswater. I'll ask him about buying online but AFAIK its the same as you have to sign up for one of the 3 contracts.

CPW in ireland are still selling the 8gb with 18month contract for 399E so anything less than that is reasonable.

Very interesting. Seems that you can just walk in and buy one for 169BGP  and ask to do the contract signup later. I'll be giving my mate a call tonight and check whether you can buy online for 169 without the contract too. Strange why O2IE havent followed suit.

    its not really

we really do get shafted over here!

Especially with the exchange rate. makes no sense whatsoever to buy down here then.
Its a lovely phone and even without 3g 169GBP is a bargain.

That forum a few posts previous has someone who says they bought on on cpw.co.uk and weren't signed up to a contract automatically

Pity they dont post to Ireland, also a pity I live as far as you could possibly be from NI

Ha ya I did ring them there, all you need a chip and pin credit card! Limited to one per customer. He was saying something about doing a credit check for the o2 contract and needing a UK address but that's done online after i think?

He basically said what you posted. The last time I talked to him he said how O2 had been complaining to CPW because people were getting away with an iphone and no contract. Last night he said that they reduced the price because they wanted rid of the stock and also because they thought it might entice people onto the contract.

You buy the phone and they get your name and address. Do a quick credit check but dont actually sign you up for the contract as they leave it up to you which one to choose when you connect to itunes. You still need a name address and credit history in the uk though.

I think you'd find it much more difficult to buy two, cheers for the offer though

They are €99 in Germany though so if the procedure is the same for buying them and signing the contract over there i'm going to chance it when i'm over there in the next couple of months

It's probably only for a limited time, so I wouldn't risk it.

Probably a very simple question and the answer is hidden away somewhere, but if you unlock the phone can it also be used with RTG sims ?

I bought one today in NI.

    1. If you buy in CPW store they make you sign a contract which says if you don't activate the phone within 14 days they will charge you £219. You have 7 days to make up your mind or return it :D

    2. If you buy in O2 store you just supply a valid postcode (Like BT34 1OQ, which is Kildare St in Newry). Pay £169 buy credit card or debit card. The receipt does not say anything about activation/contract etc.

The O2 store is in Buttercrane Centre in Newry
