Just wondering if anyone knows if this is still up and running? I tried to get in contact with them in September and had no success. I used the mobile number that is given on the WIT website.

EDIT: Sorry for double post , boards.ie is having some database errors atm. Can you delete one of the threads plz Sully.

Damn thats a shame. I am going to look into resurrectingit next year then. Hopefully there will be some interest. Where you a member of it before if you don't mind me asking ??

As I mentioned in another thread, I'd like to help you get this back up and running. Haven't classified myself as a gamer in quite some time (not since the glorious CS days) but would most certainly be interested in the sponsorship side of things before building my new rig.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

    Sponsorship?

Yeah I am deffo going to try and do this, I will more then likely take you up on your offer to help :) .

Yeah thats the strange thing, on the WIT website it says PC gaming, dosn't mention anything about boardgames/cardgames/tabletop games.

What I am thinking of is PC gaming, none of the above. Perhaps I should not try to carry on the WITless gaming name then, as I do not want people thinking it is the aforementioned .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,456 ✭✭✭stick-dan

Christohicus, there are others who would be interested in helping you with that, members of my class have tried before to start it up again and to no avail! They too only wanted the pc game side of things like counter strike source and pro evolution soccer and most xbox, pc, and play-station games. I'll get them to post up here!:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

Cool good to know. Yeah it would be very helpfull to get them to post here if possible. I myself am not a CS fan, I prefer CoD and BF, but obviously CS is so big that that would be one of the main games played. Its good to see some enthusiasm surrounding this :D .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

Well i am not in WiT yet but im almost there and i would be very interested in setting up a gamers soc next year and would love to help with things such as organising lans and tournos.

It's not that daunting. I'll advise you to get the basics set up now so you can have a stall at Clubs and Socs day which is vital to recruit members!

Well if Clubs & Socs are as unhelpful as they were with me, then he isn't going to have a clue what to do or how to go about things! Take him on under your wing there Adam and show him the way things are done! :)

Your help would be much appreciated man, as is anyones that is interested in helping out with this, if only just to bounce idea's around.

One thing that i am concerned about is actuall interest in such a Club/Soc. The fact that it was present before, but then stopped a year or two ago would lead me to believe that back then, at least there was very little interest in it.

Still, I am going to try and get this going, hopefully there will be alot of interest in it :) .

The guy in Clubs and Socs, was reasonably helpfull, although he could not aswer some of my questions as they depend on other factors and we will have to set up a meeting with other people.

What I really need atm is someone that can do professional looking posters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

Any news on the gaming soc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

I have to have a meeting with Comp Services and since I was only looking into this in the last week of lectures there was no time. I will try and get a meeting asap, I don't know if Comp Services is even there during the summer, I will have to check it out.

Regardless of the results of the meeting i will be setting up the club, but I want to make it the best it can be thats why I need to sort a few things out.

The more people that we get to better though obviously. A few people have already said they are interested and willing to help so I will try and get them together in or around the time college starts next year to get everyone's ideas together.

sorry i never got back to ya, the lads i was talking to are not bothered with it next year. He not sure if he coming back and the other lad left. Is the S-net server still operational in the college or did they not shut that down.

Thats good to hear Jake, just make sure you get in ;):p ( and I'll working on not failing this year and dropping out :p) .

No problem Dan, that sucks though. Yeah the S-net server was shut down afaik a while ago.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 24,056 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sully

Yup Snet was dropped due to lack of interest. We tried to get interest and while people signed up, getting a time and place to suit people was proving difficult. Then server problems arrose and speculation was rife that the other lad running it with me was downloading of it lol.

    But ya, Snet is gone!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

I'm sorry you are going to have to fill me in here a bit. I thought S-net was for the most part a site and forum for WIT Students to hang out on? When you say "getting a time and place to suit people was proving difficult" what do you mean? What did you need to get people together for ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

Well as long as i get the points for one of the three courses i applied for down in WiT i will help we out but until then i am useless to ye

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 246 ✭✭witless_steve

As far as I can remember WITless gamers collapsed under the weight of inept management really, not enough recruitment of fresh talent so it ran out of steam. Well a few internal splits didn't help things out either.
Not sure if you want to go down the traditional gaming route or the PC gaming route. If the PC route I'd forget about getting any help from the college on that score, I think the only route that was open when I was there to do that was to rent out a gaming cafe and have a gaming night there.
If you want to go down the traditional route let me know I have a few contacts for that part of the world that are still alive and kicking.

WITless gamers won't really die as long as there is always some old hand around to keep the name alive. At least until someone gets their head together and floats the society again.

S-Net as I recall was always there to provide for computer students, what the college was unable or unwilling to provide.
Members got shell access to a Linux server, with various software compilers (C, C++, Java).
Members were also free to host their own websites, and most of the features you normally only get with paid-for hosting, were provided for free (PHP, PERL, MySQL, PostgreSQL etc).
Members also got a nicer email address compared to the college's offering.
    e.g. witless@snet.wit.ie instead of 20007777@student.wit.ie

Of course, we did have our website and our forum, but by-and-large, they were not active.

As for starting a WIT lan gaming event, the only place I can think of that used to do this before, was the old Cybermart internet cafe on the Park Road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

Thanks for the info Steve. When you refer to the traditional route are you talking about consoles ( ie. Playstation / Xbox / Wii ) , or are you talking about D&D,Warhammer, chess and all of that lark?

I am thinking of trying to cater both PC and Console groups. I myself am a PC gamer, but I would like to have console gamers too as there seems to be a growing console scene in Ireland ( we are/were the country with the most PS2's per head of capita outside of Japan ) and I would like to try and facilitate that too.

OK thanks for clearing that up rogue-entitity. I was actually just thinking the other day how it is disgracefull that they do not give us at least a minute amount of those reasources that were provided by S-Net.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 495 ✭✭jakedixon2004

Does anyone play Company Of Heroes down n WiT because i am the uncrowned king of that game and would love to whoop some a$$ when i get down there in September

True, but at the same time, they were not used much. If the interest is there, I rescued the server hard-drives so I have a complete backup of the user's home directories, the website and the forums, and it wouldn't take me long to set up a VPS, domain and restore everything.

If you succeed in getting the gaming soc back up and running, and want to setup a website/forum combo, I would be interested in helping.

I don't personally I am more of an FPS man, but seeing as that game was so popular I am sure there will be someone that plays it.

Thanks for the offer rogue. I may take you up on that we will certainly be trying to get a website and forums set up.

That means that i should probable invest in a copy of co4 before i head down to WiT

I used to be a part of the WITless gamers managment. There was a group of us in college that used to play RPG's. We played outside of college aswell. We never got any new people from colelge so WITless gamers was neglected.

I organized a few LAN's for it about 3-4 years ago. But i neglected it after that.

My brother(patrick ffrench), patrick Dunne(bozzie) and myself were in charge of it. All of us have now left college so i suppose its free for other people to take up.

To expand on what David wrote...

WITless Gamers do still exist in Waterford, just not in the college for the reasons given. A lot of the more hardcore members - i.e. those without social lives - i.e. me - graduated or dropped out, and switched to gaming in each others homes rather than in the college. There's still a good dozen of us floating around, including the guy who founded the soc back in the 90s. We even have one gamer from Warpigs, the group that predated us and was shut down for massive embezzlement. And it was a wonder that we didn't get a budget for the first two years...
Thanks for the info Steve. When you refer to the traditional route are you talking about consoles ( ie. Playstation / Xbox / Wii ) , or are you talking about D&D,Warhammer, chess and all of that lark?
It would have been the lark :) There was the occasional lan, as David said, but we never got any help from WIT for that type of thing. It was always in someone's house or a net cafe. They might have changed since then of course, but I doubt it.

If you do get this off the ground, let us know. Ex-students could join Societies back in the day, which was always a useful way to bump the numbers on paper. And that always made the college be more helpful.

    Morgan

I'm just bumping this again as I see some activity on these forums from people that said they may be interested in joining a Soc if it were to be set up. ATM I am really just looking to see if there is any interest in this kind of Soc being set up , I'm also trying to see who wants to help out. Please go to the site that has been set up and let us know if you would be interested in joining/helping out the Soc.

    Cheers

There is talk about setting up a Computer Club again this year - a 4th year student was asking me about it. Not sure if he has made up his mind - maybe you could merge or something?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

Thanks for that Sully, I may look into that option. I'm going to PM you some of my contact details. If you could pass them on to that chap it would be great.

If there is enough interest I would prefer to keep the clubs seperate, but if there is not enough interest merging may be a way to make the two clubs viable.

btw Like your new subtitle :P :D . I'd say a few people in the City forum are going to get onto you about that  .

If you're dedicated to the society, you should have no problems with interest and participation! It's when events start getting cancelled and times changed that people start doing other things with their time (the unfortunate case I found the poker club in towards the end of the year when committee members fell by the way side).

I'll be happy to lend a hand anyway, while not being a PC gamer, I can certainly help with the console side of things (I think you need to cater for these people given how large the scene is now). I could also help with trying to get sponsorship and better deals from computer companies, game manufacturers etc.

This is all assuming I get into second year :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,456 ✭✭✭stick-dan

Is it going to be PC gaming or Console gaming?

I think console gaming could give you some serious revenue earning power and then maybe you could invest in some serious PC gaming machines.

An idea a few of the lads in our class were going to try before was to hold a fifa or pro-evolution tournament and charge entry. And these two games are due to be released come september so the timing would be perfect should you be needing a fund-raiser to gather funds for the club.

That's just bad management! But also, towards the end of the year most clubs/socs get quieter.

M8 it would be great if you could help out yeah. I was hoping someone would step up and be willing to push this side of the Soc with me. It has been many years since I last had a console ( my last one being the GC , yeah kids console blah blah blah, it had some amazing games on it :P ). But yeah man I really want to push the console side of this , I just need help as I am not really up to date with it :) . Head on over to the site ( www.witgs.co.cc ) and sign up and post your oppinions and ideas for the Soc. I really want to get as much input as possible as I feel that will make it a more successfull Soc.

I am hoping to have the Soc cater to both PC and Console gamers equally. As I already said I am more up to date with the PC side of things atm, so forgive me ( and the site ) if it seems to be more PC orientated atm, I just need more input from Console gamers :) . I have started a fair few threads on the forums on the site with ideas and suggestions for the Soc.

Yeah we have been thinking about holding a Wii Tennis Tournament and a Guitar Hero Tournament. Perhaps we could get a Pro Evo ( although i hear Fifa is getting better then Pro Evo now ?? ) Tournament.

Ah right ok. Well it's good to hear that it will cater for both sides of the coin. Why not pass out questionaires around the college and find out what games people are into at the moment.

A Wii tennis tournament would be a great idea, lots of fun to be had there, and also the guitar hero will have most people excited.Very good ideas there.:D

Yeah pro-evo or fifa, either would suffice. You're dead right Fifa is fast moving ahead of Pro-Evo. The new one shows a lot of promise and is guaranteed to attract a lot of the interest from most courses.

I presume GameStop would sponser you and the dome could be used as the venue, the college has a lot of flat screen tv's that could be used.

Yeah, I put my hands up in shame over that. I was just under a load of pressure towards the end of the year.
Sponsorship for a college club eh? Do the Clubs & Socs allow that kinda thing?

They do and they don't. All depends really. The softball team is sponsored by AOL and the Motorsport club were sponsored by a garage. We had to tread lightly with regards sponsorship given the nature of the activity we were carrying out but I think I found the right balance so that there were no complaints.
Unless you failed a lot, or a critical subject for next year - that wont be a problem

I doubt they will allow SNET back onto the college network...

Sully, as I said previously, I still have a complete backup of the SNET server (I have its hard drive sitting on my desk), if you want to pass him on my contact details I would be happy to help him get things started.
