since starting college this year ive gained a stone (despite walking at least an hour a day and going to the gym 2 or 3 times a week) and i believe its down to my horrible love of cider! Its so hard to avoid over-doing it in college when everyone around me is knocking back the pints. Whats the best alternative for a night out that will maybe help reduce my horrible new beer belly? and when friends say "oh its 3 euro drinks night! lets go for pints!!" how do i resist ordering a pint of bulmers and a bag of hunky dorys?? is something like vodka and blackcurrant a better alternative? Theres also bulmers light i know, but its not really the same...

Well it's a bit girly but somehting like Vodka+Sprite Zero would have ~0 calories so it could be what your after, and is quite palatable.

Or maybe JD + Diet Coke, Vodka+Orange Juice, Gin & Slimline Tonic.

Bulmers has the highest sugar content of anything you'll get in a bar.

Just move to a standard lager and cut out the crisps.

Still a high calorie carbohydrate. OP I reckon you really should aim for the shorts & diet mixers. At least until the belly goes down. In the same boat by the way, usually go with Bulmers or Guinness, recently though, the jeans have been getting tighter & I ain't getting taller!

What do you eat for meals? Cereals have a lot of sugar & sliced pan is a definite no-no. Same goes for pasta/potatoes. Basmati rice is what you want, low-gi & it's damn tasty too.

Of course the above can be had once in a while but they really will add on the pounds if used regularly

Try a a real cider if you want to drink, bulmers has glucose syrup added back sweeten after pasteurization.

You could also if you prefer sweet (naturally no added sugar) cider try a Normandy/Brittany Doux sweet cider or 'Demi-Sec' is 3–5%. usually available from good off liences, i known Redmond's of Ranelagh have a range

Guinness is quite low in calories per unit alcohol, lower than most beers. About the same as most "lite" beers. Guinness gets a bad name since a lot of drinkers of it are fat, so people presume that it is causing it, it is the 15pints per day and kebabs that do that! if they were drinking bulmers they would be even fatter.

Low cal mixers aid absorption, so you need less overall calories to get the same blood alcohol level.

Cider is also has a very high amount of methanol in it relative to other (good) beers or (good) spirits, increases hangovers.

A lot of bulmers drinkers do not like "real" cider. Bulmers is more like cidona and vodka. Give bulmers light a go. the sweeteners should aid absorption, so not only less calories per pint, but you should have to drink less pints to get to the same "desired state";)

I assume that's a typo, because the vodka still has about 50kcals in it.

Give the Bulmer's light a go. It's less sweet than Bulmer's (which is horribly sweet and not a very traditional cider) and is pretty damn nice. Plus, it's sold in longnecks, so if you drink a longneck to everyone else's pint, you'll be taking in less alcohol as well.

Poor old spuds - getting an awful press lately. Their GI value depends on the variety and how you cook them, also GI, although important, is only one indicator and does not give a complete nutritional evaluation of food! So don't rule out the humble spud.
As for the diet mixers - please stay away! Most of them contain aspartame, an artificial sweetener which is terrible for your health! Google it to find out more. People need to stop thinking that diet drinks are an okay option purely because they are lower in calories - I suppose if thats your only concern then fair enough.
I drink vodka with a dash of finches orange squash. It would be better than the bulmers anyway.

Suggestion: A half and half mix of bulmers / bulmers light with plenty of ice is bang on IMO. Start with that then move to "pure" bulmers light. Avoid eating crisps altogether. I know it's hard to eat well when you're out in the boozer. Try to grab even a sandwich or something.

A 30ml, 100 proof shot of vodka actually has 82 calories.

Shots it Ireland are always 35ml, and 80 proof (i.e. 40%), so that translates to 77 kcal.

After three years of research we have a definitive answer on that one, I can rest easy now! :-)
