Flavouring unflavoured whey

So I'm nearly out of whey. Just ordered a load of the unflavoured stuff off bulkpowders.co.uk. I used it a lot before for making protein pancakes and adding to breads / museli / stuff like that and will continue to, but....

It'll be the only whey I have now, so for shakes, I'm wondering what you lot flavour yours with?

I had a google, and it looks like nesquik is a big favourite. I was thinking of testing with cocoa and artificial sweetener (I had a look in a hot chocolate drink (not nesquik) and it was basically just sugar and cocoa).

    All suggestions welcome.

Options light drinking chocolate is supposed to be nice with it.

Maybe try some blackcurant or orange miwadi/robinsons mixed in with it too.

boots are also selling tubs of orange flavoured isotonic mix so if your not to worried about the carb\sugar content a scoop of each will give you a very cheap version of RAM.

    +1

I'm in the same boat Khannie & this is the easiest way to a decent tasting shake.

Thanks for the replies. I'll definitely give the mi-wadi thing a lash. The no added sugar ones tend to be virtually calorie free.

All I have left while I wait for the new stuff is mint-choc pro-x. Threw some in my porridge before and found it absolutely rank, so I tried it with extra cocoa and some sweetener this morning. It was....ok....ish. I'll definitely give whey + milk + cocoa + sweetener a lash when the unflavoured stuff gets here.

Can't wait for my protein pancakes though. I really miss them.

I tried a variety of things, ended up settling on this:

    150g oats
    100g whey (35g vanilla flavoured, 65g unflavoured)
300ml slimline milk (or some water, some milk. plain water does work too, it's just not as nice, but worth trying.)
2 or 3 eggs (depending on your mood).

    Method:

Mix the oats and the whey dry. Add the milk and mix it up. Leave overnight. In the morning blend it up in a blender (I usually mix and leave overnight in the blender container yoke), adding in the eggs as you blend. The longer you blend it for, the thicker it gets (adds more air...a bit like whipping cream). This gives you a bit more volume to fill your tummy if you're trying to keep the calories down.

You make them american style (i.e. not very wide, and thick enough). We have a pan that makes 3 each go. I'd usually get 13-18 pancakes out of that recipe depending on how long I blend for.

Add a smidge of butter and some jam on top. DELICIOUS.

Man, that sounds fantastic! Defo on the to-do list! Thanks

Most welcome. For what it's worth: The original recipe did have peanut oil in it. I'd say that could be nice too. Walnut oil would be healthier. I used sunflower oil in it for a while, but dropped it out to reduce calorie content. Since I don't have any vanilla whey left, I'll probably add in some sweetener and some vanilla essence.

Even in my mind mint choc porridge sounds horrible.

Well....I tried the unflavoured whey with some orange mi-wadi and water last night. Let's just say: I wont be doing that again. :(

I'll try some options in it later and report back.

unflavoured whey + options belgian choc + water = delicious. Possibly the best tasting protein shake I've ever had.

I just used one of the sachets, but I'm pretty sure you can buy it in jars. Only using sachets would work out fairly expensive.

edit: Nesquiks primary ingredients are sugar and cocoa, so I'm going to give that a lash too and see how it works out.

In fairness it was on good authority, my training partner uses the same stuff and descried it as tasting like sex!!

You can get jars of Options in Tesco.

    Khannie

Have you got the nutritional beakdown of the pancakes?

    Thanks

Nice one. Lidls also do a "chocolate drink" which I may try if cocoa + sweetener tastes like crap.

Not exactly. You could work it out handy enough though if you had the packets in front of you. I think each pancake works out at around 70 calories for me (I worked that out before). You need to add your topping on to that of course.

They're going to be around 7 grammes of protein per pancake, give or take. That's a guesstimate that I worked from: 80g of protein from the whey + 12-18 from eggs depending on how many you use + some from the milk + some from the oats all divided by number of pancakes (average of 18 for me recently).

They're basically carbs + protein though. Some vits and mins from the eggs and milk. Very little fat.

Do many of you take your protein with water?
I may try this tonight, I usually take it with low fat milk.

Well I would take it with water after a workout and in the morning, so it gets its thing done as fast as possible...mixing it with milk is really recommended before sleeping for slow release overnight.

Cheers Terror, will give it a try post workout tonight.

Tried the lidl one just there with whey + water. Tasted pretty good. Not as good as the options belgian choc, but not far off it. Hard to argue with the 95c price tag for a 400g jar.

Top 3 ingredients in it are:

sugar, whey, fat reduced cocoa powder.
