Ever been a member of a forum that has been really active but has just fizzled out? I used ot go on Dangerhere and then Premierleagueboston, both of which used ot have about 10 posts per minute, a good rapport, and SFA flaming depite very liberal mods, but both gradually ground to a halt and are effectively now dead. another one I'm on now seems in terminal decline (Its not me, honestly), anyone else have this experience?

Think it's just part of the lifespan of any website. Without a continual infux of new posters the same posters will gradually get bored with posting the same stuff to the same people.

    BOARDS WILL NEVER DIE!!!!!

(cause then I'll have to work)

there was a band one i used to be a member of... literally a post every minute, usually more often than that, really good group of regulars with a good group of noobs turning up, specially when a new album came along.

now... 10, 20 posts a day... and it's lucky. and most of those are iether pure nonsense, or someone begging the band to tour in some random country nobody's ever heard of. pretty sad, really, though private boards have sprung up from that board, which are still in varying degrees of activity, so that's good. but still sad that the original board, where several couples first met (myself included) and where so many good freindships started, is so neglected now.

The very first place I ever posted on the Internet, a Radiohead fan-site called Polyethylene which most people visited just because it was the only Radiohead site with a chatroom (which IIRC, was a crappy Bravenet one at that).

If anyone else used to post there around '98/'99, I was BlackStar.

I'm a mod on another forum, it's full of muppets though...

If I could ban them all I would!

    Do it, DO IT!!!
I recently came accross a forum I used to post on during that whole teenage angst and america bashing phase that I thought had died, but is hasn't. Some posts were quite cringeworthy indeed.

One I was lurking in shut down for a while before a change of ownership.

    Sounds exciting.

I notice that the TeenIreland crowd are keeping low, despite the fact that the majority of their members are now on Boards. That's right, hang your heads in shame.

My first board was brilliant, we had an evil nemesis board full of pain in the hole dry ****es and it was refuge for normal people.

It went belly up in the height of its sucess and we became a refugee community.
Moveing around and not being attached to a new site to draw in new users, meant that pool of people dwindled and stagnated. We all started to get on each others tits. One user in particular was very divisive and splinter boards formed and people left.
I now check in on 3 dredges of these boards but they lack any energy.

To make matter worse Autosport absorbed our better organised nemesis.

I hold my head high! :D I got into TeenIreland about a year before it disappeared. I really miss that website, and I can continue doing so til August! (at which point the suffix -teen will for ever be removed from my age...)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,465 ✭✭✭Irish Halo

Yeah it's happened a lot to band ones I used to frequent for various reasons (being shut down, band splitting up etc etc) but it's OK we've all got boards now right?

Also message boards don't seem cool any more, all the kids are using the "social networking sites" instead and then most boards which are active are poorly modded and so full of crap and txt spk.

    I prefer message boards ...

First forum I was on was a pile of sh*te, which was closed due to something complicated that I can't remember, second one I ended up admining, and got into some legal complicated sh*te over something someone posted. The other admin closed it soon after, but unrelated to that... Was still quite busy at the time... I left for Boards after. It spawned 2 other forums after, 1 of which died fast, the other is still going, to what extent, I don't know... It's the timeline of fora.

It's funny that I still bump into old members from all on different sites.

You can get it merged, just ask in the Helpdesk and one of the admins might be able to help you out.

I already tried that here, but it went unnoticed and my last sub finished up 3 weeks ago. And now I'm too poor to afford a sub!

Probably should have posted that from this account...

yeah 6th P45 has gone to sh1te alright, may have had something to do with the massive amount of bannings that went on there for a while, even their great Unbanning hasnt seemed to generate any new life, still keep an eye on it tho in the hope that it'll improve again, tis no Boards tho isit?

On thinking about it, my first forum was su.nuigalway.ie which later became SIN.ie. My little brother's one of the regulars there now so I drop in every now and again just to keep him on his toes.

Coincidently the su.nuigalway.ie forum was also created by Cloud.

If I proposed a new forum for previous TI users, would it get much support? It could be a spin-off of After Hours (like Teach na nGealt) or even a young 'uns version of the BGRH/Ladies Lounge!

(pm me at your leisure, if anyone thinks it's worth a shot...)

The first forum I was on was a forum full of 14 year olds(also 14 when I joined) and moderated by 15 year olds.

It died because the admin had fights with most people on the site.

Looks like P45 may have halted its decline and is now simply gone.:(

A great pity cause there were some great characters there. Boards, while excellent, can be too segregated i.e. too bloody big! :D

P45's decline started when its founder upped sticks and left for Canada, and it was on life support ever since. It was still fairly active, but I guess its founder decided it wasn't worth funding anymore.

I spent many many hours of happy time wasting there - such is life!

On the P45 site now showing, it says this:
p45.net expired on 04/19/2008 and is pending renewal or deletion

It was the daddy of them all AFAIK

My first forum was awesome, it was a really innovative and exciting community. Plus it had a forum were posters could call each other out and it was an awesome forum. We do tournaments too such as Column, Graphics, and Flaming tornaments.

But alas, eNz/ FHW is no more:o

Used to post on fametracker.com but the forum disappeared. Also posted on the related mightybigtv.com (now televisionwithoutpity.com) where they had this huge off topic (non tv) section. Then one day the off topic section just disappeared so loads of people started posting on this ezboard forum and a load of people were banned from TWOP. After a year or so that was running out of steam, then one day all the posts disappeared. There's now one thread and about one post a month. I still look at forums on televisionwithoutpity, even reregistered with my original name, but I think I've posted about 3 times.

I used to run one... axed it when the organisation for whom it was being run got too political. Probably wouldnt be bothered setting another up, but it is a very easy thing to do. Boards will go eventually, they all move on. especially if it continues to have the technical problems. very slow sometimes. More multimedia style boards, along the lines of youtube, bebo etc, will replace 'boards' style sites.

You can't really compare youtube and a discussion forum, they're two completely different things (though hopefully the people who go around leaving comments on the videos never find Boards).

However, I think for a lot of people Boards will replace Bebo, I can never see a load of people stopping using Boards for Bebo, but I can see it happening the other way around.

Again though, it's hard to compare the two as they're very different, but even look at the amount of people preferring to use Facebook over Bebo now.

    tis no Boards tho isit?

No, you'd need a decent Leaving Cert to be taken seriously on P45. A grasp of how to use apostrophes would help too....

    Lol, I was on TeenIreland.

I basically came on and was a cúnt to the mods, and then they made me one(???).

Daithi was hilarious, as were the other crazy republicans there.

    Ah, good times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,323 ✭✭✭Hitchhiker's Guide to...

I joined here as part of a big exodus from a TCD-based discussion board when a mod there started randomly deleting posts she didn't agree with. Think there are still loads of people from TCD now on this site with more-or-less the same start date.

The tcd-based one then died (at least temporarily) We've all spread our wings a bit now though, and the TCD board on here seems to be following the same declining path a bit, although i could be wrong as i only glance in there occasionally.

I used to post on a Stargate game forum a few years back, the game got cancelled and replaced with an MMO, so people gradually started leaving for the official forums, its a ghost forum now... people post from time to time and I still lurk every so often, its kinda sad tbh when all your internet buddies go away :(

The forums that have really died a death are the usenet ones. I took a look in on some of the old ones I used to post on and there's nowt going on in them apart from spammers trying to flog something called Viagra  and a few folk slinging abuse at each other. Even the hotbed that is soc.culture.irish isn't what is was. The rabid republicans must've moved elsewhere.
