Ok I've rang Curves in the recommendation of a friend and I'm heading there this evening for a consultation! Does anyone else go and what are your thoughts on it?

As a weight loss centre it works. Without a shadow of a doubt, once you go at least 3 times a week and watch your diet, weight will come off. As somewhere to build strength, no. What Curves are you going to?

I don't really wanna lose weight, it's more to tone up....I'm in city centre, so the one in Lime Street!

Well lifting heavy weights will tone you up like a mofo :)

Just a question, but why not join a regular gym?

If it's the womens gyms you're aiming towards and toning you're after you may want to go for contours express instead, they are womens gym with the same basic concept of curves but their resistance machines actaully provide positive and negitave resistance. James Street and Walkinstown are the only Curves that provide toning classes AFAIK.

Well my friend recommended Curves to me....plus a 30 min workout seems nicer to me as I'm not all that fit, get v out of breath easily! I know there is a gym near me too, Riverside fitness, I don't know anything about it though...

Training is all about adaptation, after a couple of weeks of curves you should be fully adapted to there training, then your just maintaining and not improving anything! thats why most people with actual goals leave curves-its more suited to old or lazy people who are happy to be in there comfort zone.

Rush Boxing club and Rush Martial Arts head coach.

You can go to riverside and only do a 30 minute workout there too you know. :)

    agreed.

curves dont change the resistance you do or the actual exercises done. no overload, so the effects start to slow down.

Curves is good for getting you into the habit of exercising but it is nowhere near as good as a real gym

I joined Curves a couple of yrs ago and I stayed for about 5 months. I left because it was summer at that stage and I had gotten great results so i took a break from it and now i'm ready to do it again!

I was so toned up and confident and I found it brilliant, worked for me and I was on the smart system which tells you how many calories you burn so i found I was reluctant to snack on something worth 250 calories as I had worked so hard to burn some off... so i think it drove me to eat better!

I'm looking to get back into it but its expensive for me at €50 per month membership and 20 minute drive (additional petrol costs), does anyone have an alternative to Curves that they could recommend that may be a little cheaper?

I must admit I like the fact that it's women only and of course 30 mins and your done....

    Any ideas??

    Thanks!

    Agree.

    But

Curves (or a version of it, Figure 8) is where I started exercising. If you're completely new to exercise it's a great introduction and because it's so structured you know you're on the right track.

The thing is, as others have said, as you get fitter you will have to push yourself more to see results. So I wouldn't sign up for a year or anything.

Definitely a good place to start in my opinion, just don't get stuck there.
