My girlfriend currently has an 1.2 Opel Corsa, and is going to change it. She's looking at a 04 Skoda Fabia, with a 1.2 HTP engine. It's a lovely clean car, but from reading on here, some of the 1.2 Fabias are fairly sluggish. She won't need a supercar, but she will do a bit of motorway driving so she won't want a slow car either.

Does anyone know if these newer HTP engines are any good? What bhp would a 1.2 HTP give?

the HTP is pretty good, it's 65bhp AFAIK. there are lower bhp versions of the same engine.

Why not go for the 1.4tdi -Ambiente 80bhp €19210 or 70bhp €18410 if she is doing a lot or motorway driving..
Edit : just saw looking at 04 model, so maybe:

There are 55 and 65 hp versions of that engine in the fabia(and polo for that matter).I would say the majority of them in this country are the 55hp unit(note that ALL 1.2 engines in the saloon and estate are the 65hp unit). It may feel a bit sluggish at first but remember that HTP stands for "high torque performance" so for normal driving it wont feel that sluggish at all.For example, at motorway speeds it would have a fair bit more go than say, a 1.0 yaris and also offers 95% of that cars fuel economy.55bhp may sound like a very small amount but if you look at torque its the same as the rest and will be a bit more economical.

Cheers for the replies, mightn't be a bad choice of car from what's available in that class.
