I've noticed quite a few threads lately that are bordering on, or are simply Racist.
    Should they be allowed?
I realise this is an "open" type forum but should there be limits?

If they weren't allowed moderators would lock/delete/bin them...report what you have a problem with and see what happens...

New poll: Remove potentially pointless polls?

In my opinion yes they should be closed.

Discussions on how people from other countries are inferior to us or worse than us because they are dirty, smelly, lazy, etc. should be too close to the bone for Irish people!!

    Anti-Irish racism
Harpers weekly once compared the Irish to "Negroes" and said we should be extinct.

So any half-wit engaging in racism and thinking they are superior should realise that for a long time the rest of the "civilised" world thought we were "white-negroes" and "savages"!

All of that said, the AH mods do a great job in balancing out these threads! <3

OMG Potentially racist threads! Bollox to that, any thread has that potential all it requires is someone to post a racist remark on it, tell you what lets lock all the threads put boards.ie back in it's box and all go out to play:rolleyes:

OP: define "potentially" racist threads...do you mean ban any thread which looks like it might turn into a thread where people posted racist remarks? Pre-emptive modding? I can just see Dudess now, hunched over her crystal ball with the mouse hovering over "Lock Thread"...

From the first page, the following linked threads made me wonder, I guess it was the high ratio that made me wonder,

lol at linked "racist" threads...only the first one about Romanian criminal gangs could be in any way construed as racist by right-thinking individuals. A big "WTF?" to the the one about the yank shooting his wife...how the hell is that racist...it points fun at American gun culture...we don't even know the race of the people involved. Just so we're clear American is not a race.

I think part of the problem is that it's not taken seriously any more. Even when a person is called out on their racism (and I mean actual racism), they whinge and complain, stamp their feet and soundly declare it's not and the critic is a liberal-do-gooder.
F*** sake, anytime racism is pointed out it's denounced as PC nonsense. How the hell are people meant to take it seriously when there's a core of those types ready to tear to shreds anyone who points out racism?

A lot of these "How do you feel about X nationality" are started with the intention of stirring sh*t and yet they seem to run their course instead of being nipped in the bud.
    Tacit acceptance of racism much?

I'll read the thread later when you've had your say.
For me: I voted no to locking/removing "potentially racist threads". I'm not going to close a thread that has the potential to be racist. If it's an outright racist rant, maybe. I am not your moral compass. I am not the thoughtpolice. I believe every poster has the benefit of doubt (Within reason), and should be given a chance to express their views. If it' politically incorrect, or borderline racist - good. It's better that this stuff be discussed and debated and argued in a civil manner on-line.
I will continue to lock threads that are the product of a deranged mind that has fallen loose of its cranial cage and bounced off a keyboard a few times. I will lock threads that go around in circles on the matter. I will ban people who think AH is a platform for their racist crap / repeat idiots. I will lock threads and ban users who incite violence towards a minority.
A lot of the moderation of AH depends on you, the readers of After Hours - I don't want to decide whether a thread or post matches the criteria above. It's a subjective call, and I may get it wrong. Report posts / threads! We all operate within certain boundaries when we use Boards.ie (It's a private forum; it's Irish, it's hosted in Ireland and therefore bound by Irish laws; there are crtain moral, ethical and civil limits obeyed offline and online), everything else is up to you. We cannot please all of all of the time, so don't expect us to do what you want, but you sure as hell have your say.

Drawbacks of removing such threads: impeding free speech, not letting the forum run its natural course, hard to know where to draw the line

Advantages of removing such threads: raise the average intelligence level of the place, raise the tone of the place, greatly lessen flame wars and the resulting bannings/lockings, save the rest of us from having to read such dumb drivel.

Intresting to read in one of those girly mags this week (my partners ) about the girl from NI who whlie over on a vist to the uk recently was accused by a South African KFC employeee of making a rascist comment when she asked for her chicken to be ' not to spicy ' .This twat kicked up such a fuss in front of everybody in the store saying to the girl several times '' what did you just say to me ? '' that all the poor girl wanted to do was get the fook out of the place such was her humiliation at being called a rascist by a black employee who reported her . This was after she explained to the guy and his manager that her people from NI tend to speak quickly and was misunderstood .Had she being served by a white employee he/she most likley would have known exactly what the girl was asking for .Anyhows, the girl from NI was taken to court and the result ? - the judge threw the case out of court.

My own feelings about racist issues/threads is some peoples interpatations of what actualy being a rascist is which can vary from one person to another. In the case above it seems the shoe was on the wrong foot and either the guy misunderstood /was being paronoid or was using the race card .

If post needs to be moved for maybe being off topic then please do so .

I dont mind it so long as theres reason to it. Saying all French people are x y and z, is generalising. Knowing 5, 10, or 50 x y and z frenchmen still does not excuse you to make those kind of remarks about the French as a whole. For example.

I mean I'm just as happy to ridicule american cultrue as anyone else for instance, but you wont hear me make broad-brushed generalisations. Obese people eat their children and hicks mistake handguns for hand-drills. That doesnt make all americans fat and moronic. Calling all americans tick, is offensive. Yes, I'm looking at you Real B-Man. I'm sure youve been cajoled about it though.

Load of cock. Seriously, if someone posts about criminal Roma gypsies but just refers to them as "Romanians" and then goes on about the "bloody Romanians", calling that offensive and racist is not overly sensitive or overly PC. Being overly sensitive or overly PC is stuff like the following:

Or the way "Baa Baa Black Sheep" was changed to "Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep".
Or the way a teacher in an American school was reprimanded for using the term "niggardly" (meaning: stingey, mean, cheap).
Or the way Santa impersonators in Australia can no longer say "Ho ho ho".

It's most idiotic to equate sensitivity about blatant racism to the above.

The one thing that annoys me as much as hypersensitivity is the insistence that taking reasonable offence is the same as hypersensitivity.

My sentiments exactly. And lol at people who use the term "liberal" as an insult!

Well not really. I for one am more than happy to allow some ignorant twat show themselves up by mouthing off their pathetic, ill-informed, profoundly stupid generalisations here, in the knowledge that they'll get lambasted. Most AH users are decent folks. So, like Karoma says, until a thread with racist sentiments in it (there's a difference between that and a "racist thread") becomes utterly ludicrous, it stays open.
This is not a site that has a racist agenda so therefore, when a thread is started expressing racist, offensive sentiments, people will argue against it - in fact most people will. Those who agree usually just come across as dumb and not worth taking seriously anyway. Whereas the more intelligent people will actually post content that's worth reading.

Yeah, he's obviously too young to remember a time when he would have landed in a police cell and been beaten to a pulp for speaking to a white person.
Kinda trivialises the horrors older generations of his family would have gone through...

Emos aren't a race as such but that's still a generalisation so you're not as squeaky clean as you think. Personally I don't have much of a problem with generalisations.
