i like skipping because its requires little equipment and you can do it in your back garden. it also help with coordination.
the one thing with skipping is the high impact if you have knee issues.

it is an aerobic activity, i dont know the specifics but i would presume that it would use as many calories as a light jog maybe.

any cardio exercises will help burn fat, aerobic or anaerobic, and skipping is certainly better than nothing.
you should also lift some weights to increase your metabolism.

I started doing it a couple of months ago to warm up and warm down and it's certainly perfect for those - warms you up everywhere as you mvoe everywhere...

It's supposedly helps to make you light on your feet and can improve endurance.... and, it's fun! :)

I've skipped in Muay Thai and boxing, and it was anything but light.

We'd usually do something similar to interval training, where after 1 minute you'd skip as fast as possible for 10 seconds & repeat for 10 rounds, or when the coach shouts, drop for 10 push-ups / crunches / skip as fast as possible keeping your knees up etc.

I found it a great workout, but you'd be hard pressed to do it for more than 10 mins.

For me it’s a big part of my training and I would highly recommend it. Like anything the results will be dependent what you put into it. Sure you can skip at a speed\intensity that’s equivalent to a light jog or you can really go at it and you will get an excellent full body cardio workout with the added benefit of improving your hand to eye coordination.

This is true but skipping is very easy to pick up! It doesn't take long until you can skip at a pace far faster than a light jog. Skipping can also be done as HIIT, with intense bursts of speed and effort followed by slower speeds. Also both skipping and jogging can be very hard on the knees if done on concrete but skipping can be done on an exercise mat on a patio or on a small patch of grass and in other confined spaces, unlike jogging! :)

EDIT: iascanmore, that's exactly the video I would have picked to demonstrate rope training :D

Here's some good ones...the last is my favourite ;)

Yea skipping certainly makes you light on your feet. We do alot of skipping at boxing and on average we'd spend around 5 rounds skipping! We dont just use it as a warm up method as it helps you with feet co-ordination etc!

To answer your question - yea it would really help burn fat (20mins skipping with breaks = 250 calories)
