Vegas 2008 Megathread - Qualifying and general discussion

As the title says, this is for people to discuss qualification, hotels, other Vegas things and so on for summer '08. Also very on topic are other Vegas tournies at that time besides WSOP ones.

As with the Irish Open thread, usual rules apply to organisers posting events. There will probably be less live sats, but more online sats I'd imagine though for the WSOP.

on step 3 of 6 with pokerstars not playing til tomoro though

you going out there anyway 5star?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭ionapaul

I don't really have time to go (plan to go to Australia for 3 weeks or so in August / September) but am giving the Stars steps a lash - only gotten as far as step 4 so far and am currently on step 2 - using FPPs as much as possible on step 1, haven't joined the ladder any higher. I would love to give one of the weekly €650 super sats a go at some point, but only if I satellite in to the super sat.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,454 ✭✭✭hf4z6sqo7vjngi

Going to spend no more than 1000 on online sats and super sat when over there. Does anyone have a list of the main sats and when they run on the big sites?

A few das ago I was a definite no, now I am a possible, but probably not. I might try a couple of the weekly finals maybe, hopefully by satting it.

Expect announcements of some live sats shortly.

Does anyone want to be so kind as to post a full schedule of the events (date and buyin) of the WSOP this year? I can't access any of the sites it will be on sadly.

We have a live satt in Tralee on the last week-end in April. 3 x €10,000 packages guaranteed, €250 buy-in, 1 re-buy/Top-up at €200 each.
A 1 hour clock will be in use. Theres a thread with more details in the underneath tourney section.

My apologies, I just thought you may be starting another one of them 'Anti-Macau' threads, you know people ask an innocuous question about the Macau and get a few answers and then turn it on its head and start complaining about the place:eek::eek::eek:

    Please stop that rubbish talk.

On topic, does anyknow know what sites are having the most qualifiers per sat per player? What I mean is a satellite buyin of 1k will generate more places per 100 runners than a satellite buyin of 500. Is the stars 650 one the biggest general one or do other sites have bigger buyin last sats?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭ionapaul

Brag: just won a Stars Step 4 at the 1st attempt this time around. Made it from Step 2 to Step 5 in 4 days :) The $700 entry will possibly be the highest buy-in I've ever paid, live and online. Gonna wait to play it on a Sunday night when I reckon the weakest field will be around - man am I going to be dead money, I'll be waaaaaaay too tight!

Stars also has $2100 Step 6's, but they only award one seat for 9 players, other places get paid cash.

Most of them offer approx $1 per hour as long as you swipe your relevant players card. The Harrahs ones (Rio, harrahs, Paris, Ballys, Ceasers) have a joint one. You get your comps redeemed in the card room and are seperate to the other casino comps.

Haven't played the Step 5 yet...I'm probably going to wait until next month, wait for a Sunday night when the higher level steps will fill up with players 'taking a shot' rather than the STT specialists currently playing. In the meantime will use my FPPs playing the Step 1 and 2 games and hopefully build up a few more Step 5 tickets that way...

In better news, in the meantime I've won a €550 ticket into the SE's end of month game, if I play this will replace the Step 5 ticket as the highest buy-in I've paid :) I'm on a hot streak in live tournies.

I am weak *hangs head in shame*.

Flights booked, Jun 21st - Jul 5th. Thinking about pushing the boat out and going for the Venetian Poker rate at ~$155 a night. Might just go somewhere like Bills Gambling hall for ~$90 a night though, haven't decided. Feck it sure, it's only money.

Main event, shmain event. I'll save money by not playing the crapshoot satellites there.

    Tournies I plan to play:

Venetian, The Omaha and at least 2 others I hope. Depends on runnage:

    24/6: $330 FO
    25/6: $540 PLO
    27/6 or 28/6: $540 FO
    1/7: $330
    3/7: $540

WSOP - Hope to play one of these, but it really depends on other results:

    27/6: $2000 FO
    28/6: $1500 FO

Would really love to play this, but unless something spectacular happens in one of the other games:
    29/6: $10,000 plo

Then again I'll probably do little of the above, play lots of 1/2 and some 2/5 and go out a few nights with some bowling/pool thrown in.

On that note, would it be better off sticking to cash games or give a few tournaments a go (despite the variance)?

  • Subscribers Posts: 32,859 ✭✭✭✭5starpool

Depends what you are willing to spend if things don't work out how you planned. If you can only afford to lose a set amount and the tournies would use too big a chunk of that then stick to the cash. If they are going well take some of the winnings for a decent tournie (such as a Venetian 540 one). Work out in advance though how much you are willing to lose in worst case scenario and try not to get to into Vegas where this figure doubles or triples in actuality (or even worse).

Cool. Sorry I won't run into you at the final table. I'm in Vegas June 6-15. Probably for the best as they only allow so many Irish in Vegas at a time (Oh, wait, I'm not Irish ....)

Anyone else there in early June?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 661 ✭✭✭dK1NG

I'll be there the 7th-14th of June, then onto Mexico for a week.

All in all, I think its working out at approx €1.6k for flights, accom etc. I'm booking it tonight so will let ye know the final figure.

Flying with Continental from SNN-Newark-Vegas; then Vegas-Newark-Cancun; and finally Cancun-Newark-SNN.

Just booked my holiday at the weekend. a week in vegas followed by a week in san diego.
I booked my flights with delta, €720, flying dublin to LV on 1st july and flying from SD to dublin on 14th. Delta was the cheapest i could find.

Probably could have got cheaper, especially if I went for midweek flights, but I went Aerlingus - LA for €715 and the Southwestern LA- Vegas for $100, so not too bad. I like that route though as I took it last year, and I left about 3-4 hours for LAX transfers when booking my own flight.

When booking accomodation have a look at tripres.com which gives a full rundown of all hotels.
Then check the hotel websites directly and you might find it even cheaper.
I dont think there'll ever be a better time to go to Vegas the way the dollar is at the moment.

If you have been to Vegas before and have a rewards card you should log and book through them. I just got 7 nights at the RIO for $420 from 3rd to 10th July. I could have had 7 nights at the Imperial Palace for $99.

ebookers.ie is v.good for flight and hotel packages.

Just back from a last minute week there that cost €1123 for 8 nights in Excalibur and flights booked through ebookers.

Ill be going from the 17-27th.Which one of these would ye play ? Fri, Jun 20th
    12:00 PM
    3-Day Event Pot-Limit Hold'em (Event 38)
    No Rebuy/Add-ons
    $2,000
    or
    Sat, Jun 21st
    12:00 PM
    3-Day Event No-Limit Hold'em (Event 39)
    No Rebuy/Add-ons
    $1,500

The 2k pl one would have more play but the 1.5knl would be weaker?????????

  • Subscribers Posts: 32,859 ✭✭✭✭5starpool

If you must play one then paly the 2k one I guess, but you should play a few of the Venetian tournies too Shane, biggish fields (300-500) for about 500 each with better structures.

Is some kind of tax registration number required in order to collect any tournament winnings or any winnings!??

If so, I would appreciate any advice on how to go about getting it.

Also...is it worth bringing a laptop to keep up-to-date with events happening in vegas...anything need to be bought to get it to work over there?

    Cheers!

Do it beforehand if you are feeling lucky, if not don't waste your time. You only need it for cashed over $10k i think but mmay be mistaken.

Is it best to book now or wait till closer to the date to try and get a better deal?

Also, is it best to book on the hotels website or are there sites that have good deals/special offers on rooms?

One website, (reservations.com or something like that) quoted me 5k, rang the hotel direct - $4500, booked it with ebookers 2k.
