    Hi,

Has anyone heard about the military style fitness training that takes place in Dublin? Think it's in Phoenix Park.
Any idea how I join it or who to contact?

I heard about this on the radio a couple of months ago.

    Thanks.

    Nah its these guys...

    http://militaryfitness.ie/about.htm

€160 for 16 classes over 8 weeks...(flyer I got yesterday said the classes need to be used up over 8 weeks, website says 10 weeks though)

Thing is all the classes are held in public parks, could people not just turn up and train close to them following the same training without paying?

I saw them on the morning program on TV3. They were doing pushups and squats and other stuff, then they had one guy holding a punch bag, they would line up and run up and hit it.

It looked similar to what I see rugby teams doing in pitches. Dunno if it is worth the money, they have no real overheads. I suppose somepeople prefer teams or groups support, like people paying for WW meetings.

Says the first is free so no harm trying, better than nothing, but nothing you couldnt really do on your own.

I'd sooner spend my €160 on a set of weights and a chinup bar.

Ok all I needed to see was Sean Cahill is running this thing to highly recommend it.

Sean is probably one of the best soldiers I've ever served with - sh*t, feck that - he's the best I've known or served with.

When I seen this thread I thought it was someone cashing in on the military thing a lot like you see Krav Maga rip-off merchants doing.

But Sean is the real deal. He was a phyical training instructor with the Army Ranger Wing for over ten year's. His also an qualified EMT & combat medic so your in safe hands.

I recommend anyone check this one out.

What kind of stuff do these guys do exactly? Exercise wise? I'm just wondering because it seems to me, in the US at least, that military style training is essentially CrossFit, or CrossFit is essentially military style training (whichever).

So is this militarytraining.ie stuff CrossFit in a park?

I've no idea I haven't trained with this group.

I base my recommendations on Sean Cahills experience as a P.T. instructor in the army (including the Army's elite Ranger wing). I also base it on personal experience training under Sean and later for a very short period with him.

All I can say is that fitness training in the Irish Defence Forces is nothing like I've read about crossfit, because ultimately military physical training is about getting someone ready/fit to fight.

This training group couldn't do that, as its not equipt or mandated to do it.

Cool, thanks just wondering. I wasn't trying to discredit this Sean Cahill guy as I don't know him or his methods at all.

Slightly OT but what is fitness training in the Defence Forces?

On the TV3 program it seemed like there was no letup, 10 pushups maybe then straight into another exercise. It was a mix of men and women, women doing pushups on their knees so they could do the same as the men (hopefully not to save the ovaries;)) They might have been doing those burpees too.

They should really have more info on their site, maybe a youtube video.

Well all soldiers are required to maintain a certain level of fitness, and every soldier is tested on their fitness levels every 12 months.

Depending on age and sex the requirements differ.

Basically your required to do a test of CV fitness and local muscular endurance - laymans terms - run and push ups & sit ups.

On completion of that you must pass a 10kms walk in boots, combat pants - loaded backpack (I can't remember the weight at present) but basically the pack contains a change of uniform (including boots) rain suit and your required to carry a full water bottle.

Again depending on age and sex the time for this differ's, but its more or less a forced march - ie a very fast walk.

These are just basic requirements and ensure your fit to undergo career course's, oversea's service and selection for both promotional courses and Army Ranger Wing selection courses.

But for these last two you'd have to understand that these fitness levels are a very basic and the student on the course will be brought to a far higher level in order to complete the course syllabus.

Unlike Crossfit where students are required to undergo short intense workouts the Irish Defence Forces training is structured to provide for a more progressive approach to training/fitness and stamina in the believe that this type of training provides for a slower fall off in fitness/stamina levels during times of inactivity - ie busy operational periods - field exercises - oversea's service etc. ie times when regular training is hard to come by.

Thats a really brief description of training & fitness requirements in the Defence Forces.

I second that! Sean Cahill and Joe Ryan are the real deal and I recommend any one in giving it a go.

i have been doing this military fitness with sean and joe for about 5 weeks. they are sound lads and really do seem to know what they are doing. i have seen a vast improvement in my fitness since i started. its great fun . both men and women go. we all have a laugh. dont feel like you wont be fit enough to start either because all fitness levels are catered for. and if anything else you are outside. and coming into the summer there is no excuse.

The average class consists of about 5-10 minutes jogging. some light strectching. then we move on to the exercise. i have been to 10 sessions and not one has been the same. but i tell you you really feel like you have had a work out.
so the exercise varies all the time and i promise you wont get bored. its worth a look but i was hooked after the first class and to be honest its kinda cool knowing that you are getting trained by special forces.
