Do guys like goth?

I'm 25 years old and fairly gothic in the way I dress and look. I am very comfortable in my appearance and as far as I'm concerned I'm quite average to pleasant looking. But, I've been single for a good while now and it gets a wee bit lonely sometimes. Is it my look putting guys off? Do Irish guys see girls like me as a bit of a scary mary?!! I hope not!!

To be honest it would put me off, but thats because its not a look i find attractive. But im sure there are loads of people that do. Maybe your mixing with the wrong people ?

Well, i wouldn't go for a gothic girl (well, actually a little bit of gothicness is pretty attractive, but something fairly elaborate would put me off) and well, i find goths a little scary and intimidating in general (guess thats what their point is anyway!).

I general i don't think any "mainstream" girl would find a gothic guy very attractive. But probably many other gothic/alternate girls would completely dig that. So you might just be looking in the wrong place!

And just to add, i actually like a bit of gothic music myself and i absolutely love Nine Inch Nails (a part of my username comes from NIN). They're one of my favorite bands, infact i'm listening to them right now! Trent Reznor is my idol! :)

I've often wondered about this too...

Guys, what are you thinking when you hear the word goth though? You mean like big crazy boots/spikes/black nail varnish??

Or dark hair, eyeliner and pale skin???

In my experience, many don't. Maybe it was my looks though, rather than my style :)

I should imagine it is pretty offputting to most guys, it can look pretty unfeminine, if you are happy with the way you look though and are confident with yourself I don't see why you should change.

tbh its an extreme style and i cant think of one goth that doesnt date other goths or metal heads. are you trying to attract non goths? like attracts like usually.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,041 ✭✭✭Havermeyer

Gothic girls can be fairly attractive, but sometimes they over do it with the white make up and the black lipstick. Other than that, I find moderate goths quite attractive. Are you sure you're looking in the right place for people with similar interests?

Well, what do you mean by "fairly gothic"? Are we talking black clothes or are we talking full on white makeup with crosses hanging everywhere?

Hmmmm.... Can somebody please define Goth?

I always got called a goth in school but I'd never consider myself one, EVER! I do however like edgy/vampy styles if I'm going out, guys always seem to like it!! :D I'm not being cocky but loads of guys have told me they think it's cute..

Maybe I'm confused to what 'goth' actually means..

i think the goth/skater look is beyond hot to look at unfortunately in my experience if you are not in that clique yourself they are at best not interested in getting to know you and at worst hostile but having said that its been a while since iv been around this kind of crowd so things might have changed

I wouldn't say it's unfeminine or makes girls look unfeminine in the slightest though, when done well I think it looks very feminine, perhaps you've just seen a few bad cases Miss Fluff....

At the end of the day, it comes down to how attractive you are in general though. A hot girl is generally hot no matter how she dresses, and vice versa for ugly girls. How the girl dresses can only add or take from what they already look like. That said, certain styles will alienate certain guys who have different preferences.

Personally, I don't dress very gothic/metal, yet I like the gothic look on girls, though not too overdone(Same goes with any look though, for example women piling on too much makeup and fake tan). However, I do frequent Fibbers and the likes and enjoy rock/metal music. I wouldn't expect a girl who dresses gothic to attract many guys who are totally outside the goth/metal subculture, the same way guys with long hair generally don't attract "mainstream" girls.

Goths definately don't turn me on I'm afraid. No offence OP but looking all Gothic to me looks all down in the dumps and depressed. That's why I don't find ye attractive.

Nothing is worse than a smoker though, you could be Pamela Anderson for all I care but smoking is the biggest turn off for me anyway(after druggies). I could not go near any girl who smokes or is addicted to drugs!

It really depends on the guy, and the look itself - everyone's got their own likes and dislikes.

That's basically the image I would have of a goth in my head! I personally first and foremost like to really get on well with a girl and to be able to have a free flowing conversation with her. So if a gothic girl wasn't aloof with me I wouldn't see a problem in trying to strike up a rapport.

    I don't wear spikes/chains/black nailvarnish....

I really just have dark hair and do my eyes very dark. I'm naturally pale. I think vampy style clothes are so feminine and beautiful and a small lil cross can make it look really cool.

This thread's made me paranoid!!!

Paranoid about what? That a certain meaningless label might somehow apply to you? Oh noes!

It depends on your definition of goth - white make up and overdone black eyeliner would be a minority interest, but I'm quite sure plenty of guys guys find what constitutes a stereotypical 'goth' quite attractive. Though I know most of my friends would have a fit at some of the women I find attractive, and a girl I have dated in the past who somewhat fit into that category.

To be honest, as long as you're happy I wouldn't bother worrying about it - there are always plenty of people out there to cater to everyone, regardless of what their traits and personality may be.
Guys, what are you thinking when you hear the word goth though? You mean like big crazy boots/spikes/black nail varnish??

Generally - dark hair, jewelry centered around crosses, a certain style of clothing, a lot based on well fitting, bodice type pieces, etc. Who particularly cares if it's not representative of your average 'goth', after all it's only a stereotype!

Personally I have always found gothic to be very attractive. An ex of mine used to wear a lot of black, lacey/bodice type clothing with spike collars and wristbands and the jewelry traditionally associated with such. I thought it looked great to be honest, but it only suits a certain type of person.

The gothy thing for girls can look really nice if they don't overdo it ie. white painted faces with black crucifixes painted on their cheeks.

    I like it anyway :)

Have you ever seen a happy goth? They're always bloody miserable and usually a bit weird. I can't see them as attractive when my brain is screaming 'this person is a nutter, avoid!'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,815 ✭✭✭✭galwayrush

A little Goth / Boho i like, but extreme Goth , no.

Well that excludes me from the stereotype so :D

    I'm always happy!!!! :p

It's generally hard to tell if someone is happy or not merely by looking at them. If you have a predjudice towards people wearing black and assume it always means someone is unhappy and a bit weird then of course you're going to think all goths are like this.

Anyone I know who dresses like this just likes the look tbh. Doesn't have anything to do with how happy they are....

I know someone who has goth-like make-up (well more pale than white) with tattoos and piercings buts its toned down and not a problem.

If you look like one of the mini-goths from the Central Bank Plaza at age 25 then some people may have a difficulty taking you seriously. That might be judging a book by its cover, but it is also human.

I know, I'm terribly sorry and wish to apologise to all of Gothkind for my remarks. Please don't cut yourselves or jump out of a window over it. ;)

I find dark hair, eye liner and pale skin attractive. (And black nails on girls is uber hot!! :p)
Until it comes without all the spikes, big steel boots, chains and freaky attitude.

Vampy style clothes are cool but on a regular basis might become a little too much to handle for a non-goth guy like me.

But thats just me. Some other dude might completely dig that as i said before.

Basically my ideal girl would be sorta into rock music and extreme sports. And not look/dress like all the other "mainstream" girls around who listen to Fergie and Rihanna and go out to clubs and get drunk every night.
But at the end of the day i'ld like a very normal girl no matter which "subculture" she's from.

Why so paranoid? Your style certainly doesn't seem extreme so if you give off a good and positive vibe, i.e. showing you are not drisciminative in who you talk to, i'm sure you'll do fine.

Defenestrate I agree. I try my best to be friendly with people but often when I make an effort talking to a 'goth' they just don't seem interested in talking. Maybe it's just that there not interested in talking to me!:o:D

Personally I find that thing of painting you face white (Marylin Manson like) a lil odd! It sort of frightens me :o

Don't worry OP as long as you're not trying to copy those scary Gorgoroth people or any of those freaky folk I'm sure you look just fine.

I bet you just have low self confidence

Totally uncalled for. The OP is obviously feeling down in the dumps already, lets not make fun of how she feels!

    ha ha love theses threads:D:D:D

well, do guys like goths, tbh any guy will feck off with a goth, its just a matter or weather he is sober or off his bin.

dude some guys go off with ladyboys so i think youll be fine:D

Laughing at the stereotyping here too..............goth=devil=pale skin, chains , spikes, eyeliner, crucifix!!:D:D

but then they go off with, the aul fake tan, dyed blond, fake nails, fake teeth, chains, piercings, eyeliner, jodie marsh look-a-like with a new york dolls T-shirt to give a signal they are into music...but dont know the dolls:rolleyes:

some people are freaks, and from personal experience its the dilluded blond that is the freak, at least a goth/rocker is usually straight up.

ive a soft sport for emos, goths, rockers and skaters, but emos wreck my head:D:D:D(well most the time).

ill happily hang out in fibbers OR barcode(with a mp3;))
