Chewing your Food, rather than Gulping it Down

Is it more beneficial to chew your food slowly than just gulping it down?

If you eat your meal more slowly, will this have any effect on your appetite?

I think it does have an impact alright. It takes a while for the food to hit your stomach so if you gulp it down it you may end up eating more than you require, purely as it takes a while for your brain to register as full and tell you to stop eating.

Also on the chewing well its all part of the digestion process so i think it helps you to fully digest the food but i could be wrong on that.

    Few things.

There are enzymes in saliva (amylase, I think) that start the breakdown process. The more you chew, the better the mix of food and enzyme you'll get.

Also, if food goes down in lumps, it's less likely that you'll get all your food digested. Your 'surface area of food' : 'volume of food' ratio should be better for the surface area... the acid and bile that gets added along the way wont really penetrate far into lumps of food.
