Ok so look on rte1 and rte2 now.
Whats on? crap Aussie programs on both channels.

Turn on telly anytime during the day. Whats on?
Home and Away, Neighbours, some crappy program in an Aussie hospital, some other pile of ****e based in Dingo Creek or somewhere.

Whats this obsession rte have with crap Aussie programs?

i totally agree, i live with girls who are addicted (almost literally) to home & away, it's like a religion & as soon as it comes on i walk out of the room for the half hour. get rid of it!!
neighbours they only watch occasionally as it's on earlier in the day but i have an equal hatred for that too

The women can be quite attractive though. Except for that melon headed one from Home & Away, ugh.

Yeh theres totty on the likes of H&A but come on they are such ****e programs with rubbish storylines. I'd rather a program where theres a bit of totty, or even little or none but with an engaging storyline. Why do we have to pay a license fee for this crap?

I really hope that the Australians are tormented by Fair City, The Big Bow Wow and The Roaring Twenties. We have to watch their rubbish so fair is fair (city)

    It's sunny out there.

Maybe they have a horn for fair city and corrie.

I'm not a fan of soaps in general but some of the Aussie Soaps make Corrie St look like Citizen Kane.

Everything that comes out of Australia is crap when you think about it...have they ever made any good programmes/films at all? Or literature, art, music, scientific achievements.....anything?!

I don't know if it's the heat, or the fact that they're all descended from rapists, but they must be the biggest shower of wasters on the planet.

The Home and Away Christmas annual 1991: Alf becomes impotent and has to take Mr. Fisher hostage in order to save the caravan park, which is being invaded by Irish travellers. Also, pictures of Pippa in the shower.

See. Home and Away I like, Neighbours I'll leave on after home and away and glance at, but Kath and Kim has to be the worst programme thats ever been on TV, and I mean EVER. It's painful to watch. There's no programme more irritating. I'd rather sit and listen to Bosco screeching on for half an hour than have that crap on TV.

I love Kath and Kim. Its a great show. I will always have a soft spot for Home and Away as I grew up with it though I only watch it the very odd time nowadays (usually if I am off work on holidays or sick). In addition All Saints is a really good show.

I think Fair City is ten times worse than Home and Away. Ow' are ya love ( Fair city) Gooday mate! ( Home and Away)

    Second one wins hands down.

I don't know why people hate Fair City so much. It's the best comedy series RTE have ever made.

All those aussie shows must be dirt cheap.

 I got really annoyed coz Home and Away WASN'T on today

That's the only one I watch though; Neighbours, Shortland Street, All Saints - hate them!!

TV died a long time ago. EVen though Lost and Heroes etc are on the tv nowadays, they dont count cos they have too much of a movie feel to them.

TV died when Glen A Larson stopped making the good stuff.

noone that I know watches H&A or neighbours over here, they are made primarily for the UK and Irish markets.

if you want to see some good ausie drama you should check out 'Underbelly' its about the Melb gang wars of the 90's now thats class.

Why are there so many crap Aussie programs always on RTE??

It's because it's a student's right of passage to watch crap daytime television. I love Home and Away (completlely agree with the comments about Jack, yummy yum yum, not so much about Sam, yucky yuck yuck), because it's mindless, fun tv to watch. Pure escapism for 30 mins a day...I guess some people need more minutes, hence the influx of more shows!!! (Mmmmmm, Jack.......)

In fairness, Australia has produced plenty of good stuff. Sometimes it doesn't get this far.
Films like The Castle, Two Hands, Chopper.
TV like Kath and Kim, The Secret Life of Us.
Music like AC/DC, Nick Cave, The Go-Betweens.

I'm sure there's more. They produce plenty of crap too but so do we.

Most tv programmes are tripe. But there have been several good films: Lantana, Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, Romper Stomper, Mad Max, Chopper, etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,082 ✭✭✭lostexpectation

the director if the secret life of us(a great prog) and Blue heelers has a drama on rte toninght, declan eames? another reason could be irish emigrants.

but no explanation in this universe will explain their scheduling so late at night.

I used to like one of those shows (H&W or Neighbours) for that really hot blonde bird, until she got hit by a bus.

Anyone know what her name was?

She was hit by a bus in real life by the way.

The mirror on the side of a bus slammed into her face as she was standing at the side of the road.

// edit - Madeleine West. Turns out she recovered. Still a lash. Hurrah!

To be fair to the Convicts they made some quality kids shows in the late 80s/early 90s e.g.

    Pugwall/Pugwalls Summer
    Spellbinder
    The Girl From Tomorrow
    Ocean Girl
    Round The Twist
    Ship to Shore
and a few more that I've forgotten.

Sadly those are now a forgotten dream.

The OP mentioned some Medical soap from austrailia. If they are talking about Shortland Street then they would be wrong to think it is austrailian it is actually from New Zealand.

Waterrats was a good series from Austrialia.

But I don't think there are any other shows on RTÉ from austrailia other then Home and Away and Neighbors.

    TV3 show All Saints.
