Eurogamers score is not whats important. I tend to never look at the score, a read of the text in the review is all you need.

would like this game, seems good

Looks like they have messed up in multiplayer though - if they have then they have missed a huge opportunity - those that love MK love it because of its muliplayer and a proper online version would be huge.

yeah, the all race GP was pretty much all that got played when I had the gamecube, and my friends that had it were much the same too..

this system... well, hopefully it won't ruin it.

I think the review sounds good and I like that the Wii wheel is going to make the game even better. I will be buying this on release day.

Another review here http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/reviews/review.phtml/3012/4036/mario-kart-nintendo-wii-wheel.phtml I'm delighted you can use Gamecube controllers. After play Excite Truck, I wasn't impressed with the controls.

Absolutely love that game and I thought the control system was brilliant. I keep returning to it to enjoy a quick blast...

Although I'm looking forward to Mario Kart also.

BTW, if you pre-order Mario Kart in GAME, can you trade in a game against it on launch day when it comes to buying it??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 325 ✭✭doyler442

Quick question - has it been announced anywhere that you'll be able to buy another one of these wheels as I know the gf will always want the wheel and i wouldn't mind having one myself?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 183 ✭✭writetojd

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3358 have them for $5.60 with free shipping.

Havent tried them myself but for that price and free shipping cant go to far wrong, major drawback is the 3 wk shipping time ;)

Eurogamer made a correction to the review:
    Eurogamer wrote:
Since this review was published, Nintendo has informed Eurogamer that it is possible to play sequences of four races with friends both offline and online. Offline, you can choose to select a race each time, randomise, or play in order - effectively allowing you to play through a regular GP if you select the usual first track. Online, racing with Friends, each player can select a track from those available on their save file. This clearly contradicts our observations of the review code and we apologise for the error. After discussion we feel the score below still fits the game.

cannot wait for this, just two weeks to go.

Mario Kart Wii has an obsession with ever-escalating speed that rivals the Burnout series, or even WipEout. You're constantly searching every inch of track for opportunities to go faster amid the classic confusion and slapstick chaos for which Mario Kart is known - albeit ramped up by the expansion of the field from eight to twelve racers. It's intense, addictive and powerfully exhilarating. It blends cartoon foolishness with a viciously random cruel streak. But beneath both is a deep, precise, and technically rewarding racing game that you can sink hours into in time trial alone. In other words, it's classic Mario Kart.

that All sounds pretty possitive to me.

I cant wait for this, looks really good, Track Design in DD and DS was great, more of the same I hope.

Eh.. what do you mean "only" 8/10?? If an average game is 5/10, and a ****e game is 2/10, then 8/10 seems about right for a very good game.

But really you'd call 7/10 average. 5/10 would be verging on cack.

Getting a bit worried about this now to be honest. Edge gave it a 6/10 and watch this video

    http://www.jeuxvideo.tv/video/mario-kart-wii.html#view:227962

The guy playing is obviously rubbish but must be playing 150cc (because of bikes and karts together) and is in 12th most of the race, gets the chain chomp item and leaps ahead and finishes 1st?! Some challenge...

Won't buy this on release day, which is the first time I've not for a Mario Kart game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,534 ✭✭✭Dman001

CVG gave it 8.8 out of 10. They said the main problem is multiplayer. http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=185351

He was playing on 100cc - if you look at the video again its written on the top of the screen at the start

Never trust Edge reviews. They gave the same score to Gunstar Heroes, one of the greatest games ever created.

If you're playing single player in any of the previous Mario Karts, you can do that in most GP races. Hang near the back but dont fall too far behind and you'll tend to get better items than if you were in first defending your lead (where you'll get single bananas or single green shells etc), then when you get what you need (lightning strike, chain chomp, starman, spiky shell etc) make your move up the field to win. Its not a great strategy but you'd be surprised how many times it'll work for a beginner-intermediate player.
Once multiplayer comes into play, its a whole different ballgame unless one player is substantially betterthan the others, it'll come down to luck as those in the lead will keep their relatively useless single shells to fight off players at the back more sensibly than just firing them at computer characters who wont challenge.

I'm doing this in gamestop and they said it was grand so shouldn't be a problem.

I think i saw wii wheels(full circle) in HMV on henry st.

I got a wii wheel (half circle) and a gamecube controller as a present for christmas. at the time, was gutted, thinking i'd have no use for them!! now i'm delighted. 3 player local multi!!

You're a bitter, bitter man Retro,
    Bitter I say!

I trust Edge reviews but will buy it anyway.

And as for the glory of MarioKart, MarioKart64 sucked and I didn't rate DD all that highly either, thank gods for MarioKart DS then.

I have never understood why so many people didn't like Double Dash. It was great, the tracks were well designed, you could customise your race tactics depending on what characters and car you picked, the AI was fair and the multiplayer was immense.

I hated MK64 (relatively speaking), only one MK 64 made the Retro cups on DS.

Super Mario Kart....first year in college and started the whole "Tea" Challenge thing...

Mario Kart 64....the ultimate evolution of the Tea Challenge into the "it's 5 in the morning and we're out of smokes, rizzla and munchies..cycle 5 miles to a shop and buy us stuff!...oh and bring out the rubbish bags on your way out" Challenge.

Loved all the Mario Karts and while my fave is the DS one, the 64 version is close behind. Don't understand why peeps rain on that one though - maybe it was just that they hated not being able to get the first straight shortcut on Wario Stadium? ;)

Needless to say I'll probably love the Wii version when I pick it up friday and look forward to the inevitable creation of a new challenge type.

    Christ the "Tea" Challenge

Looser of one GP washes the cups looser of the next makes the tea. I washed more cups and made more tea in final year of college than I ever thought possible. All because of fecking MK64.

Really looking forward to MKWii. Still playing through Galaxy though so gonna wait a while.

The problem for me with MK64 was that well over half the levels were utter rubbish and boring to race with Rainbow Road, usually the best track in all the MK games, being the worst offender. Triple shells were way too effective and toad was a little ballox that didn't need mushrooms for the shortcuts (which were far too effective).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 538 ✭✭✭rok

I generally only play the wii when a few friends are around for beers, so only interested in MarioKart for multiplayer.
has MK got good reviews for multiplayer?

Besides the slightly boring tracks, I fawking hated the fact that no matter how fast you went or how far ahead you got, the CPU players would always catch up with you by the next corner.

Once, yes ONCE, in all the time playing it did I ever lap a CPU character. I owned this during my student days so it got one hell of a playing

Well thats a problem I have with all the mario karts, the AI is an absolute cheating ballocks especially in mario kart 64. No matter how many blue of red shells you hit some one with the AI with the most points will always be right behind you. I much prefer F-zero GX for the simple fact that the AI doesn't cheat.

I loved (super sarcastic here BTW) when you see a character hit with your shell and they do not go up in the air. They just stop for a second and then tear off again at full speed, before you can even catch up

In my experience, if a game is €50 or less, gamestop will do a straight swap for 2 trade-ins.
(and it will be €49.99 in gamestop)

I was just checking this out a few minutes ago in one of their shops and on the stickers on the box it says something like 'we reserve the right to accept particular games'. I wonder what games they take into account?

also does that mean that you could walk in and buy 2 of their pre-owned games for €20 each say and then trade them in for a €60 game?

You don't get many pre-owned games for €20... they're usually about €5 under the normal retail price... the only exception I've seen is when a game is particularly old/crap, or when they have a sale on, and the normal retail game is cheaper than the pre-owned one...

ahh I see. it's good to know that you might be able to buy two crap games for cheaper than a new game and trade them for the new game.
