F1 Back to the BBC next year!

First things first I think the BBC should make certain they get Martin Brundle. Even if we have to petition them.
Formula One television coverage in the UK will return next year to the BBC following 12 seasons with ITV, the Formula One Administration announced today.

The BBC lost its rights to Formula One after the 1996 season, and it was since covered by ITV, with Martin Brundle serving as commentator for the past 12 years, alongside former BBC commentator Murray Walker and later ITV commentator James Allen.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has now concluded a five-year deal that will see Formula One return to BBC Sports, which will also have exclusive rights to radio, mobile and internet broadcasting.

"I am delighted to conclude this new deal with the BBC," Ecclestone commented. "It is an exciting time in Formula One and the BBC has some innovative new ideas to consolidate and expand our UK fan base."

Dominic Coles, BBC Sport Director of Sport Rights, added: "The biggest motorsporting event in the world is returning home after 12 years.

"We were delighted when Bernie Ecclestone approached us about the return of F1 to the BBC. F1 is a crown jewel of sports broadcasting, so to bring the rights back to their traditional home from 2009 is tremendously exciting.

"Fans will be able to enjoy uninterrupted, state of the art and innovative coverage from BBC Sport, across all of our TV, radio and new media platforms, for the first time since 1996."

Deligted NO MORE AD BREAKS, get in!!!!

It will still be the "Lewis Hamilton and my dad" show.

RTE should get its act together.

I curse the day they stopped broadcasting Formula One on RTE. Who cares if Jordan are no longer Irish owned? It's a lot more exciting than that Moto GP rubbish.

No more ads is great news, but I wonder who will be presenting.

If they get rid of Louise Goodman, I'll be happy.

    Bring back Beverley Turner!

Beverly Turner will NEVER return to F1. It left her very bitter judging by her book The Pits, which is actually an interesting read

LG was none too happy about having a young model on the block either.

    Woo Hoo!!!!

At last after 12 years of ad breaks, we get to watch F1 properly again.

The Beeb were close to this 3 years ago, but ITV dug very deep into their pockets to hold on.

You can only imagine what sort of money the BBC have shelled out to coax ITV into terminating their 5 year contract 2 years early and to put such a smile on bernies face.

There might well be questions asked about how much brit tax-payer money was shelled out here, but that doesn't affect me. :)

We know they have some money in the sports budget now after losing the FA cup rights & most of the international football rights all to ITV. Word has it that the BBC are favourite for landing the last Champions league package which is available soon. (Which includes the first choice CL match on wednesday nights)

Completely out of RTÉ's hands, they cannot compete with Setanta's $$$$ for something like this.

They may get some favor for throwing money to keep the GAA on RTÉ screens, but F1 simply can't be justified.

Brundle fatigue set in about 7 years ago. I honestly can't stand him now.

I'd be hoping for Wattie too.

    Don't like John Watson.

Ben Edwards & Martin Brundle would be my ideal pick I have to say!

Ad breaks didn't bother me too much. Just flicked over to Setanta when one came on. Most times you don't get a clash.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,469 ✭✭✭✭Ghost Train

Great news. BBC have much better sports coverage, I'd say the more likely to always run a live qualifying broadcast every gp, instead of bumping it for coronation street the odd time. Also might get some practice coverage like on setanta or HD broadcast of the grand prix would be great. Plus no ads which is a big plus

Hopefully the return of F1 to the BBC will also signal a return for this classic TV theme:

Also, BBC make great use of the red button stuff, so we may have some decent interactivity. Also, if there is a clash on BBC 1/2 they can always make available via red button or have it on BBC 3 like they do with some sport.

HD F1 is a real possibility now for 2009.

They probably won't, but opt for a modern sounding version.

They should get the remaining members of Fleetwood Mac to re-record it if they really have to.

It's great news for any F1 fan I would think.

Murray Walker was on BBC Radio5live yesterday and was asked if he would consider a return to the Commentary box for the BBC in 2009 and he replied ''never say never''. I wonder would the beeb try and entice him back for one final season it'd be fantastic if they did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 230 ✭✭FedFrank2

I hope they carry over some of the features ITV do like brundles oversteer stuff, gridwalk etc. But all in all a great move.

    DEAR GOD NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Murray's craw-thumping patriotism+Lewis-mania would be just unwatchable! Anyway BBC need to build a strong, young team that can establish itself for the future. Walker is about 127 and likely to croak at any minute. The guy is a WWII vetern for fecks sake!!!

    My choice:

    Broadcasting booth:
    - Ben Edwards (pants-on-fire commentator. Did F1 for eurosport years ago and does A1 GP. Best in the business IMO)
    - Brundle (knowledgeable summeriser etc. - a must-have)

    Pits:
Don't care - maybe Suzi Perry. Wouldn't mind that Ted kravitz guy, he's not the worst of the ITV crew...

    Panel:
    - Maurice Hamilton and...
    - Richard Porter of Sniff Petrol/Evo/Gareth Jones podcast. He's a bit of a Lewis fanboy but very knowledgable oln F1 and...get this...he already works for the Beeb as one of the backroom guys on the Top Gear show.

(BTW - there is a rumour in British press that Hamster will take over the Steve Ryder role).

Now that wouldn't be too bad. Can't think of anyone else who'd be better than him although there is the danger that the beeb could give the job to Lineker but I think that's highly unlikely IMO.

whatever happened to the highlights that tv3 used to show?? it lasted about 4 races! did rte lose just stop showing it mid-season a few years back, i remeber when rte ditched it utv were the only ones showing it, wasnt on setanta then.

anyways, does anyone know the name of the song utv are using in the ad for the malaysia race.

Des Lynam wouldn't be a bad choice for the beeb to go for if they can convince him to do it.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. No way. The British tv(sports)presenters are too afraid to say anything controversial in fear of being slaughtered by the tabloid press.

As I said in the other thread about this, I think Clarkson, May & The Hamster would be good??

Well, in all fairness, I always found Murray fairly unbiased and quite even-handed when he was doing the commentary. Yes, he did champion the cause of the likes of Mansell and Hill but, overall, he tried to remain as impartial as possible....... unlike the current ITV crowd!

I agree that I think he's too old to do the commentary nowadays but I think it would be nice to see him make the odd appearance as a guest pundit or something like that. Or maybe have a "Murray's Tip For The Race" segment or something like that in the pre-race build up.

Agree 110%. I've said it all along, Ben Edwards should have gotten the gig when Murray retired at the end of the 2001 season. James Allen should never have been let set foot in the commentary box!

If there is any justice in the world whatsoever, Ben Edwards should be made first choice for the gig this time around. It seems, though, that the BBC may have other ideas and it's looking like David Croft (current BBC Radio Five Live F1 commentator) is favourite for the job.

As nice as it might be to have Suzi and her tight leather pants (;) :D)reporting from the F1 pits, I think she'd be better off sticking to the MotoGP gig.

My choice for pitlane reporters: how about Nick Daman who used to do it on F1 Digital+? By all accounts he was very good. Maybe team him up with someone like Jeremy Shaw now that he's out of a job from the ChampCar gig. What do you think?

Maurice Hamilton would make a good pudit/panelist alright. Think he'll probably stick to doing the radio job, though.

My choice for presenter: How about Matt Lorenzo who did it on F1 Digital+? Team him up with someone like Watty as the regular pundit and maybe have another guest panelist like Johnny Herbert or Damon Hill at various races, like what they used to do on F1D+. It worked well there, I think it would work pretty well on the BBC. What do you reckon?

as much as i hated ITV and their ad breaks they must be congratulated for the excellent F1 coverage over the past decade. they raised the bar for F1 coverage and hopefully the BBC will carry on their great work.

and, yes Murray Walker is the greatest F1 commentator of all time but c'mon, i can't believe people seriously want him to come out of retirement next year at the age of 85 to travel across the globe
Hopefully the return of F1 to the BBC will also signal a return for this classic TV theme:

what a theme choon! i feel like im 9 years old gain

Ah that Fleetwood Mac tune. Pretty cool the way an interlude in a song became the intro for possibly one of BBC#s most watched shows.

Much as id like to see Murray return, I think it would be a bad long-term move, a couple of special appearances would be cool.

Wonder if Eddie Irvine would be worth having, im sure he could divulge all kinds of interesting details hehe.

That said, im in the US now, so its all a bit futile, until I get my little TV server setup there :D

Yeah after seeing he was 85 this year . I think a couple of special appearances would be better maybe him commentating on the British Grand Prix and one or two other European GP's.

Their are loads of good options available to BBC as long as I never have to hear James Allen again I`ll be happy! How about Tiff as one of the pit people, he is always a good laugh. Plus he could do the special driving bits just imagine it, their would be F1 cars sideways all over the place :)

wouldn't be surprised if a few of the itv presenters end up in the bbc setup, james allen might still be there ;) (but hopefully not)

It could also be Coulthard, Brundle (if his fans get their way) and fronted by Hammond.

No way will Allen get the commentary job, he's pretty much universally disliked and I'm sure BBC will do their market research.

Martin Brundle is a must have, and I'd pick Ben Edwards for commentary but they're probably more likely to go with their Radio Five Live guy (don't know his name but I listened once and the coverage was good)

I do think they could put James Allen back in the pits though. He's actually very knowledgeable when he's not trying badly to act enthusiastic in the commentary box - his articles on ITV.com are usually very well written too.

Murray Walker for special guest appearances would be great - I'm not sure why he'd suddenly come back because it was BBC though. From what I read in his autobiography he was happier working at ITV than he was in his BBC days.

Hammond is the best idea ever though. I'd have never considered him but he'd be a great presenter. He doesn't need the other Top Gear guys, I've seen a few shows that he hosted on his own and he's always been good. He's not an F1 expert but then again the presenter never is. He was fantastic at conveying some of the things that happen in F1 in some of the Top Gear features however, like the one where he drove the Renault. So I think he'd make a great host and bring a really fresh take to the show.

If only!!! What a savage intro the BBC used to have! Fed up with ITV's bland/crap intro music! I actually remember being at a race in Mondello years ago and just as the cars were lining up on the grid they played the grand Prix theme tune-Great stuff altogether!

    I would severly doubt it.

When ITV first went about going FTA (Free to air) on digital satellite these rights were talked about then, but ITV and Bernie obviously came to reasoning about broadcasting FTA throughout europe. There is no reason conceivable it would not be the same with the BBC.

AFAIK Setantas deal only covers exclusive Irish rights on their Irish channel.

I've been mailing ITV twice a year for the past 3 years asking when they planned to make HD coverage available. Always the same one liner - no plans as yet. It's only when you see these cars "in the flesh" that you realise what a poor representation TV gives of the detailed bodywork etc. I think now we have some chance of F1 being broadcast in HD especially as the BBC may well try to do something special to improve coverage (although ad-free braodcast is one huge step forward!).
Now Suzi on the grid would be super as well :)

Martin Brundle, the former Grand Prix driver, looks set to keep his job as a popular television commentator next year, when the BBC takes over from Britain's current broadcaster, ITV.

According to speculation in the Monaco paddock, however, the other members of the ITV team - including James Allen, Mark Blundell, Louise Goodman and Steve Rider - are unlikely to also make the switch.

David Coulthard is hot favourite to take over Blundell's role as special paddock analyst, but the veteran Scot would clearly prefer to renew his racing deal with Red Bull.
