Saying "lol" out loud in real life

My friend started doing this like 2 years ago and at the time the rest of my friends and I thought it was a bit cringeworthy and stupid. However, in recent times I've started to say it in real life, and tbh, I think it fills a gap in our vocabulary. I mean, how else do you acknowledge that something's funny if you don't actually feel like laughing at it? Or if something absolutely shocking happens and everyone goes quiet, it's the perfect word to break the silence in a humourous manner.

Opinions?

I don't even use that "lol" talk when I'm on the internet. Never mind real life. And how does it fill a gap in our vocabulary? If it means "laugh out loud", why not just actually laugh instead?

Well, the thing is, it doesn't really mean "laugh out loud"(I mean who actually laughs when they type it?). It's sort of.... acknowledging that what someone's said was light hearted or intended to be funny...

I actually thought of that when I read the post.
About a year ago, I actually said "edit, undo" out loud when someone did something embarrassing on the tv. Thank God I was on my own..:D

Thinking about it, I find most people sort of smile and breath through their nose in quick short burst that sounds like they are sort of holding in laughter. Sort of a quiet acknowledgement that something is funny, especially watching TV or if someone makes a witty comment that is not especially funny but if nothing was said the person would wonder if anybody "got it".

Oh ya i do this all the time, and i say "Yore ma" as well- confuses the hell outta people ha

Oh and i say "jesus lol" as well(from the humour forum, only my sister gets it) funny to see peoples faces when we burst into tears laughn in the middle of a shop

I've found myself saying F'T'Win - all jumbled together like that. It gets me a fair few strange looks. I don't say 'lol' or anything, but I do say TBH alllllll the fecking time and none of my mates know what I'm on about!

I've used it online but never in real life. I think a smirk or giggle covers it because it's not something I take literally - that is, I never laugh out loud.

I don't find that "lol" rolls off the tongue too easy in real life. I find that a simple "haha" usually does the trick.

I say lol infront of certain friends and people who will get it really. I'd never say it infront of people who I would think wouldn't get "it". If something is funny, I'll laugh (natural reaction obviously).

I type it all the time on the internet, lol. "haha" through text comes across as sarcastic or something imo so lol fills that gap perfectly.

I don't think I could ever talk to someone again who said lol in real life; it's pretty sad. I don't mind people saying "to be honest" when talking, but using "tbh" online I find really pointless - it generally adds nothing to the sentence. Thankfully people don't seem to roll their eyes as often as they use that twatty emoticon.
