Saying "lol" out loud in real life

My friend started doing this like 2 years ago and at the time the rest of my friends and I thought it was a bit cringeworthy and stupid. However, in recent times I've started to say it in real life, and tbh, I think it fills a gap in our vocabulary. I mean, how else do you acknowledge that something's funny if you don't actually feel like laughing at it? Or if something absolutely shocking happens and everyone goes quiet, it's the perfect word to break the silence in a humourous manner.

    Opinions?

I've never used the term "for the win" in my life. Now, it's something I have to stop myself from saying in real life. :o

I've never used it in real life, it's crossed my mind once or twice but have never actually uttered it.

What's wrong with the classic idea that if you don't laugh, it probably isn't funny?

I don't even use that "lol" talk when I'm on the internet. Never mind real life. And how does it fill a gap in our vocabulary? If it means "laugh out loud", why not just actually laugh instead?

Ever see that episode of Scrubs where JD is pissed cos the girl he's with keeps saying 'that's so funny' instead of laughing? That's how I'd feel if someone started saying lol instead of laughing. If it's funny, laugh. If it ain't, don't...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

Well, the thing is, it doesn't really mean "laugh out loud"(I mean who actually laughs when they type it?). It's sort of.... acknowledging that what someone's said was light hearted or intended to be funny...

I enjoy a fake laugh. I know it's funny, but my body won't react so I have to produce something!

I have an army of cat pictures in my wallet to bring out for every situation. The one at my mates funeral was legend.

I've often been tempted to text back "Wtf?" to people who more than likely wouldn't know what it meant. Never have tried it though.

If someone pulled out a picture of an lol cat and kept a serious face after a very good joke was told, I would find that very funny* :D

    *Admittedly I'm easily amused :p

It wouldn't be too bad if people actually knew what it meant but they don't so you have to explain it to them.

I actually thought of that when I read the post.
About a year ago, I actually said "edit, undo" out loud when someone did something embarrassing on the tv. Thank God I was on my own..:D

Do they say LOL phonetically, like the beginning of lolly. Or do they/you say the letters L.O.L. one by one.

Thinking about it, I find most people sort of smile and breath through their nose in quick short burst that sounds like they are sort of holding in laughter. Sort of a quiet acknowledgement that something is funny, especially watching TV or if someone makes a witty comment that is not especially funny but if nothing was said the person would wonder if anybody "got it".

That's what FTW means? I was wondering what the fuck everyone was talking about. Now I understand.

...actually I don't. What the hell does 'For the Win' mean?!!!

It's perfectly acceptable when making fun of people who you would assume do it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭IanCurtis

I hate all those internet expressions.

Really brings it back to the sole domain of geeks and nerds, where it shouldn't be and isn't anymore.

A simple 'haha' is as good as any 'lol'.

As for "pmsl", now that's just disgusting ;)

I do like the smiley faces though. :)

I've found myself saying F'T'Win - all jumbled together like that. It gets me a fair few strange looks. I don't say 'lol' or anything, but I do say TBH alllllll the fecking time and none of my mates know what I'm on about!

I've used it online but never in real life. I think a smirk or giggle covers it because it's not something I take literally - that is, I never laugh out loud.

Oh ya i do this all the time, and i say "Yore ma" as well- confuses the hell outta people ha
"yore ma" jokes are as old as... YORE MA!!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Your_mother
    Historic usage

Although this may appear to be a recent phenomenon, one can find variants in classical literature. William Shakespeare used such a device in Act I Scene 1 of Timon of Athens:

    Painter: "Y'are a dog."
Apemantus: "Thy mother's of my generation. What's she, if I be a dog?"

Also in Act IV, Scene II of Titus Andronicus, Aaron taunts his lover's sons:

Demetrius: "Villain, what hast thou done?"
Aaron: "That which thou canst not undo."
Chiron: "Thou hast undone our mother."
Aaron: "Villain, I have done thy mother."

Yore ma jokes will never get old.
I for one use them all the time.... too the great amusement of................myself. :p

I don't find that "lol" rolls off the tongue too easy in real life. I find that a simple "haha" usually does the trick. ;)

"Oft'ner upon her knees than on her feet, Died every day she liv'd."

In Macbeth, said of Malcom's wife.

    Dorrty ;)

I say lol infront of certain friends and people who will get it really. I'd never say it infront of people who I would think wouldn't get "it". If something is funny, I'll laugh (natural reaction obviously).

I type it all the time on the internet, lol. "haha" through text comes across as sarcastic or something imo so lol fills that gap perfectly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,263 ✭✭✭✭Eoin

I don't think I could ever talk to someone again who said lol in real life; it's pretty sad. I don't mind people saying "to be honest" when talking, but using "tbh" online I find really pointless - it generally adds nothing to the sentence. Thankfully people don't seem to roll their eyes as often as they use that twatty emoticon.
