    Hey folks,

was just having a geez about the Paranormal and Spirituality forums (as I tend to do!) and thought I'd try and see what most people on boards think of this kind of stuff.

I'll add a poll now..... just wondering if you believe there is any truth in these beliefs, etc.

Just tick the ones that you believe in, and justify your belief if you're so inclined!

(I added alot of different options which may be unrelated and/or contradictory, but just go with it :))

Tick which you believe in......... 581 votes

    Reincarnation

    Afterlife (eg. heaven)
    4% 28 votes
    Astrology

I'm not sure what I believe atm tbh.

I'm one of the people who believe 9/11 was done by the Americans though, if that counts for anything.

I don't believe in anything that can't be tested by experiment. That includes god, love, string theory and things I see on the news.

Any mods want to add that?

I voted in all of them because it's a checkbox poll.

Seconded. Great idea for a thread though! Reading/replying to posts in most of the Religion forums usually leads to gnashing of teeth on my part.

Plus this poll will let us figure out just how many plonkers there really are on AH...

Have to agree with the other two, the poll isn't really that expressive if you don't allow for a none of the above option. (I made that mistake on a poll before too, kinda annoyed me after).

Thirded, fourthed, whatever --None of the above; Flying Spaghetti Monster; Atari Jaguar... etc.
And the people who would have voted for these won't have voted already so you'll get a fairly accurate result.

Interesting topic. I don't believe in any of that stuff but I believe that some microwaves are time machines.

Unfortunately, some time machines are microwaves, too. That's how Christopher Lloyd met his tragic end.

I did believe in karma until tonight when I used the last of my change to buy apple crumble and tea for a homeless lady and then my card was denied when I went to buy ciggies. Not fair!

My dad's ghost stories were so convincing I can't help but believe him and my ultra religious, ex priest granddad even begrudgingly admitted once that he saw 'a woman who appeared to walk through a wall' so I believe in thems things too.

Oh and past lives though I ain't telling you why.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,352 ✭✭✭plonk

If there was "None of the above" thats what i would have said but i went for evil because of star wars, the force, Darth Vader etc... and coz some people are just mental.

    Oh and also

Nah, it's a "multiple choice poll". Science wins again.

My beliefes are a little hard to put into words but I'll give it a go...

Its like, 'we are in the box, we are outside the box and we ARE the box'. Makes no sence to most but will make far too much sence to some... I believe in the collective subconcious, everything is linked and has purpous(sp?) be it good or evil in any sence of the term.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Eh... Ouija boards and Tarot cards and such do exist... you can't actually deny their existence. They also have a a strong affect on people, now the belief factor comes into play if you believe that effect is psychological or spiritual.

Having an interest in the paranormal doesn't mean a person has to believe in ghosts and aliens. It just means they accept that a lot of strange things happen out there and want to study why they happen.

Yeah, but only if you drop a load of acid before going to a Bill Hicks gig.

It's interesting to see the highest voted beliefs, given the background/religions/beliefs some of them derive from and how they're mixed together here.

The only thing is, I must have had it really good in a past life.

    Yes, they exist.
Whether they actually do or mean anything is another deal altogether.
Their effect on people is akin to that of any religious belief.
Some people feel good when they pray. It gives them hope. The same can be said for tarot cards and the like.
Yes they exist, but in my humble opinion, the knowledge of their existence and the effect they have on others negates they power they have.

Edit: What's the deal with the "Life after love" option?

Within the context of this thread you can take it that I'm asking if you believe they have any 'spiritual' dimension to them, and not merely psychological.

I wonder can a poll be made public retrospectively? If it can, fire away Terry/mod!

I voted Karma but not because I believe in some higher force levvelling the universe or whatever...Just think if you go around acting a c*nt then you'll get yours eventually because people won't put up with it.

If only that were true, from my experience it seems to be the opposite and the c*nts seem to be the ones who always get what they want, I think I shall call it anti-Karma.

I don't really believe in anything listed on the poll, at least not in the sense intended, but so deeply engrained were my Catholic beliefs when I was young that I can easily see myself recanting on my deathbed.
