    Rule 6:

No Questions about Treatment of Injuries

As a whole boards.ie does not allow medical discussion and Fitness will be no different. Do not post threads about injuries or when you think you might be injured looking for advice. If you are injured go to a qualified medical professional for help, not the internet. Injuries can be incredibly difficult to diagnose, even when the person you are seeking help from is in the same room as you.

The only time we will allow the discussion of any injuries and how to overcome them is when the OP CLEARLY states in their first post that they have been to a professional, recieved advice and treatment and are looking for help with a rehab/prehab excercise. Thats about it.

Repeatedly posting about injuries you have looking for advice withou going to a medical or sports injury professional will get you banned. Posting advice about treating an injury when you should not will also get you banned.

G'em , Smashey and myself will all be taking a very strict view of this from now on, so be very careful and don't be suprised if you find yourself banned for breaking the rules.

From now on the default answers to injury questions are.

"Have you been to a professional?"

If the answer is no, the thread will be locked. If you continue to post advice before the thread is locked, you will be banned.

    Thanks for reading,

    Quick Q-

What about things like muscle soreness from running or lifting, DOMS etc? Things which members may have experience of and be able to help, but may not be so serious as to require professional help.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,497 ✭✭✭✭Dragan

    Hey Barry,

next day muscle soreness and the like is fine to discuss as that is a more of a part of and by product of the training itself.

It will be things like specific injuries etc that we will need to watch.

To give an example something like "Did deadlifts yesterday and my lower back is sore" would be fine once the pain is muscular in nature......something like "I did deadlifts last week and my back is STILL very sore" would be a "go and see someone" type of question.

Hope that helps, not sure if it will! :)

    What about shin-splints?
    Is a chiropractor/acupuncturist/Reiki-dude/grizzled hurling veteran a "professional"?
What if I go to a professional, receive advice and treatment, then someone here gives me bad advice about rehab/prehab exercises. Can I sue? Or at least get a sticky on every forum saying please do not discuss Clive's injury?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,497 ✭✭✭✭Dragan

Well ideally all discussions involving Clive would make mention of razor sharp beards, amazing levels of Zen and sandwiches.

The rule around prehab/rehab is allowing dicussion ONLY of excercises that have been advised by the relevant professional.

For definition of "prefessional" see, "anyone you decided to go to in real life and can hold responsible for any further aggrevation of the injury!"

As for shin splints, because they are a simple overuse/imbalance injury and the treatment goes as far as "sort out the imbalance, eat protein and up your calcium" i think that should be all gravy to discuss.

Why is it any different from people on the forum asking for exercise and nutrition advice? Most of those on the forum who give nutritional advice, recommendations and workout critiques are not qualified fitness professionals.

It's very possible that some of the injured people looking for advice, suffered their injuries after following fitness advice on these forums!

By the way, I welcome the changes you've made and believe they're long overdue. I'm just curious as to why it doesn't apply in the same way to exercise and nutritional advice. Are there different legal implications?

    Hey dude,

it's about as simple as not wanting to excacerbate anyone existing injuries more than anything else. Sure, legal implications do have a lot to do with it but the majority of the training and nutrition discussion that goes on here is very, very general.

For example, there is a big difference between someone saying "I need to lose weight" and a standard reply or someone saying "I need help with my bench" and a standard reply vs "I have a pain running down my right leg from training" and trying to give a standard reply.

At the end of the day, Fitness has been around for a long time and is a massively busy forum but general "health and fitness" discussion is not seen to cross into the grounds of "medical discussion" by the Admins but at the end of the day the decision to clamp down on injury discussion has been made by the Mods.

Injuries are just too complicated to help over the internet, there is only so much info we can go from and we can only be so accurate. Think about it as being like trying to help someone who makes a post that say "I need to physically change but i cannot tell you what is wrong with me or what i am currently like".

Actually it is just keeping this forum in line with the Nutrition & Diet forum's charter
    3.
Bear in mind we are not professional nutritionists and we are not doctors, so don't look for medical advice.

    4.
There will be zero-tolerance of any pro-ana type topics or crash dieting. If you want to discuss your cabbage and rubber band diet that's alright but don't expect much support (or success for that matter). This forum is to promote healthy and varied eating - not to advise you in how to drop a stone in a week.

That forum is moderated very well, as is this. I am sure common sense will prevail.

I did some bicep curls and my muscle had a dull soreness the next day- normal DOMs.
I did some bicep curls and my muscle has a sharp stinging pain all week- see a doctor.
I ate some beans and seem to be farting a lot- normal.
I ate XYZ and have a severe stomach pain- see a doctor

Dragan, what about if someone has an injury and is looking for the best course of treatment. I've seen people on here asking "should I see a physio, or a chiropractor". Is that sort of thing not allowed now?

    amazing levels of Zen

zen has levels? would that mean meditating in a tree?

"whats the sound of one professional clapping?"

    :p

Yeah thats fine, thats just giving them direction. Not everyone knows the differences between lets say a physio and a neuromuscular therapists and such.

Directions are fine, instructions are bold!!!

What if the person replying IS a sports injury professional? Yes, I'm being pedantic but I'm also a sports therapist... :p

I guess the problem there is proving it, it is the internet after all.

I'm a self made millionaire since I was 12, don't believe me? Go f*ck yourself, etc.

Surely a reputable therapist wouldn't try to diagnose an injury over internet without have the opportunity to asses someone hands on...?

Did the use of a smilie at the end not indicate that my post was in good humour and not meant to be taken seriously?
Anyway, a reputable therapist will discuss symptoms with you before they even put their hands on you, they should then have a fair idea what may need to be treated.
There are 'symptom checker' sites on the internet, I can think of two off the top of my head which are fantastic and would fulfill pretty much the same purpose as people posting their symptoms on here and others replying what it might be, all without assessing hands on...

I don't actually care whether the moderators allow it or not anyway it doesn't make a difference to me.

    Then why ask? :D

And the anwers is no, even those claiming to be trained professional cannot answer those questions, and if they do so will be barred also.

I don't know. If mp1972 is willing to post up his or her real name and addresses and other relevant information, there may be argument made to allow it (Ignore the fact that boards would be libel as well).

No, their would'nt. The simple fact is that we will not allow the Fitness forum to be an area for the discussion on injuries. Thats about the size of it tbh.

People giving nutrition advice here are usually speaking from experience. We don't have too many experienced doctors here.

Can you list the 2 sites please? Even if you are going to a doctor it could be worth knowing what could possibly be wrong with you beforehand, some people might have a few doctors who specialise in certain things, no point going to one and then be referred to another.

Most of the time I go to a doctor I know exactly what is wrong with me, last time I went I pretty much prescribed myself! i.e. told the doctor what I had what I should take, how many, mg dosage, how many days etc.
