Ireland: ROG, steadied a desperately listing ship..reborn after the RWC fiasco, tougher and more streetwise, walking proof that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger... ultra dependable and completely back on form...can't wait to see him in a focused, committed and well managed team in the Heineken.

Tournament: Sergio Parisse, Italy...a one man wrecking ball and much like his country man, good old Padre Pio, seems to have the power of bi-location...best 8 in the world, would make any other international side you care to name.

    Ireland: ROG
    Tournament: Ryan Jones

Best of the Irish (there really was only one) ROG, best Irish newcomer would be Heaslip.

I haven't seen too many of the other 6Ns games but best of the 6Ns for me was Clerc but tbh that's based in France V Ireland mostly.

Hard to pick any stand-out for ireland, I think really the performances in the key positions of 8, 9 and 10 were crucial to any decent play we put together, along with moments of great personal brilliance from Heaslip, Reddan and ROG. Hard to seperate between them though. Heaslip is a revelation at 8, rightfully putting Leamy out at 6, who was beginning to let us down in that position.

For the whole tournament, I have to agree with Parisse. He carries the whole Italian team seemingly effortlessly, playing in practically every position at once. The man is simply immense, and there is no player who even comes close in terms of his individual skill, determination and leadership. No player in the whole tournament matches his ability to impose himself on a game. He is literally Italy's MOTM every time they play. Honestly, this guy is a machine, and most importantly he is only 24! I believe in time he will go down as one of the greatest players of all time, hopefully bringing Italy forward with him. I can see Italy becoming a major player in the not too distant future under Mallet and Parisse. They're definitely showing signs of massive improvement, despite disappointing results this year.

    Ireland: O'Gara

Tournament: Parisse without doubt the best 8 in the world he is an amzing player has everything would start on any international team.

IRELAND: ROG, closely followed by Jamie Heaslip

TOURNAMENT: Sergio Parisse, he's is far and away the best No. 8 in the world. Such and incredible player

Ever notice when italy play, you can literally hear the little "god he's great" sigh before the commentators say "Parisse"? :)

for me - I'd say Heaslip as Irish player of the tournament - simply cus of the impact he's had on that backrow, and because we all owe him a huge thankyou for knocking easterby out of there ;)

Parisse for player of the tournament.

Ireland: Rob Kearny or Eoin Reddan, i cant really decide.

    Tournament: Has to be Parrise.

    The guy has it all!

He's good but I still think Ryan Jones has been immense for the best team in the tournament so far.

    She has no bewbs.

Ireland: ROG / Kearney for playing some of the rugby I like.

    Tournament is on going.

    +1 for O'Gara and parisse

Parisse just further justified his selection! Unbelievable play for that intercept try.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,249 ✭✭✭Stev_o

    Ireland: ROG

Tournament: Parisse this man has everything in fact ill stick my head out to say that he's the best player in the world at the moment he has no faults. I would love for him to captain the Lions next year :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 59 ✭✭what say what?

Ireland : Kearney - impressive to say the least honorable mention - Heaslip
Tourney: Shane Williams with Martyn Williams a close second

Both their tries today were class

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

Parisse purely on the basis that he is in a poor team but still manages to take on the opposition completely singlehandedly. Awesome player.

Of our crew I would choose Heaslip over ROG.
Kearney will be better next year but there were a few rushes of blood that cost us.

Think he dirties his bib a bit too often. Can be a very sly bugger. Yellow carded against us and pulled back a French player by jersey today as well.

Dunno I reckon those are admirable qualities in any number 7. Once you don't get caught of course ;)

    WTF?

    Kearney/Heaslip

Parisse is a hero whenever he gets the ball, see that pass he made with the boot today? Class!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,178 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Ireland: Heaslip probably, Kearney was impressive in patches.

Tournament: Parisse, by a long, long, long way. He's ridiculously good. As one commentator put it - he's the best fly half Italy have.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 160 ✭✭chicoben

Parisse is almost the best anything they have, except for Castrogiovanni that is.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,253 ✭✭✭Sandwich

Irl : OGara - far from excellent but the pick of a mediocre bunch.
Tnmt : Parisse. Imagine three of him in a backrow!

Hell, you'd probably get away with 15 of him on the pitch and none would look out of place.

Another vote for Parisse. He is best player in the world in his postion. The guy has it all. Too bad he is stuck in a crappy team.

agreed, but good players are bad losers. they never have any hesitation in taking a card for the team if its necessary

Irish player: Kearney because represents a little hope for the future

Tournament: Sergio Parisse (Sei un mito!)

Had the pleasure of meeting him and getting his autograph at Malahide Rugby Club before the Irish game.

BTW, I wish David Wallace would get a few more yellow cards if it meant him influencing a game like Williams

  • Site Banned Posts: 5,676 ✭✭✭jayteecork

I loved reading the anti-Brian O'Driscoll rants here during the 6 nations then today we saw what a vital cog he is in the team. When was the last time you saw tries like Noon, Tait, and Sackey with BOD defending? never.
He's the best Defensive centre in the world along with Noon and Tipoki.
Andrew Trimble misses vital tackles, we saw it in the World Cup and again he was at fault for vital scores Ireland conceded like Shane Williams and Jamie Noon today.

It's not all bleak for the future. We need a decent coach and I still think this team has huge potential.
Geordan Murphy is only 28 I think, I thought he played excellently today until he had to limp off. We need to start Luke Fitzgerald in the centre. Guy looks dynamite any time he touches the ball. Kearney is good for the wing for the time being.
I also think we need Stringer back in the team straight away. It's pointless having a player like Reddan who plays in England when we can have the Munster scrum-half working with what is essential the Munster pack for Ireland. He knows them inside out.
We also need a proper open side flanker. As much as I like David Wallace we need a ball winner like Martyn Williams - who was outstanding today and throughout the championship.

Wht has Keith Geeson done wrong except get injured, he is a classy no7 who needs to be in our starting xv

Apparently Eddie is defo a man to hold a grudge.

ROG, u are all taking the mic?

He couldnt even catch out bailshaw and vainikolo yesterday. His performances have been so one dimensional its not funny.

Kearney and heaslip for IRL by a long long long margin.

    Tournament - parisse

    Special mentions:
Shaw (35 and still goin strong - amazing)
Henson (hate to say it but he played well, very good hands-must be all the moisturisers!!!:D)

Yeah but like you said yourself - we need someone defensively capable - im not sure Luke is yet. Defenses win tournaments, as per Wales yesterday. same bunch of idiots on the pitch, but they tightened the defense from the shambles at the world cup.

You're kidding right? One of the few Irish players who seemed to have any pride in himself or his shirt..took the game to the english, ran explosively, handled and scrummaged well and defended stoutly...yes, he made a few errors but the guy is at the beginning of what will undoubtedly be a long and fruitful international career....

He displayed commitment, heart and intent....more than can be said for alot of the experienced internationals at his side...

Dare I say Heaslip isn't big enough for an international number 8?

Not sure if I agree with you on that point. For me Reddan has been one of our stand-out players in the tournament. The fact that he doesn't play for Munster or one of the other provences shouldn't count against him being selected. IMO he is a better all round player than Stringer and should be in the Irish team

    contenders

    Kearney
    Heaslip
    Redden
    Ogara

if I had to pick it would be tied between heaslip and kearney

Mick O'Driscoll was immense in my opinion also and did not deserve to lose his place to the lacklustre looking O'Connell.Albeit through lack of fitness

He's of a similar height and weight to Parisse. I know there's more to it than that, but I don't think he's particularly disadvantaged by his size.

He's young too. Develop skill and technique first - size can be accrued at a later date, that stuff can't. Look at Dallaglio 10 or 12 years ago, nothing near the size he became. So it's possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

Has to be Heaslip, was very good off the back of the scrum and always took the game to the opposition. Special mention to DOC who is probably at present Ireland's No. 1 lock. Had far greater presence around the pitch.

    Rory Best wasnt bad either.

    I joke, I joke!!

Although roughly the same age as Parisse, which is mildly depressing.

Ireland: Hard to pick one but ROG did well enough along with Heaslip and Kearney.Defensively nobody comes close to BOD except maybe Darcy who of course couldn't play.

Tournament: Strictly as best player I would also say Parisse. However in terms of positive effectiveness results wise I would say Martyn Williams.I do not believe Wales could have won the Grand slam without him. They possibly could have without Shane Williams or any of the others, some of whom were also very good.Martyn Williams is up there with any of the top 7's.McCaw may be better but one thing they have in common is their "sneakiness" and ability to break the rules almost all the time while only being caught a small percentage of the time. What we would give for a player like this.
