I have a small disability in my arms and I want to build up my muscles. I have seen what look like small hula-hoops that you spin on his arm... Does anyone know what these are called?

I am also interested in other methods of building muscle on my arms without using weights.

what about pushups and chinups? It's hard to offer advice without knowing the disability, sorry but i haven't heard of the hoolahoop arm things, but i'm sure some of the fitness gurus on here can offer some great advice.

a hoola hoop motion around your wrist would only really tone your shoulder I think. What part of your arm do you want to tone? tricep (above the elbow at the back) bicep (the guns) or forearm (below the elbow)?

Considering there's some pre-existing disfunction or disability in your arm, you'd be better served listening to a professional.

The disability is a very mild case of Holt-Oram Syndrome. The main disability with this condition is that I can barely rotate my hands/upper arms. Also I have a slight problem with gripping things (dumbells) as I have no thumbs.

I have tried push-ups, but am only able to do about 15 and it only seems to be improving my triceps.

Is there any alternative ways to work on my biceps without rotating my arms?

You could probably use resistance bands in some way

I would agree. Have you asked any for advice?

You can do inclined pushups to work yourself more, i.e. raise your legs up onto a stairs or bed.

No, I haven't really asked anyone. Haven't been to a phisiotherapist for years. When I did, they told me to take up swimming, which I've never gotten round to.

I intend to start over the summer, but I'd like to build up my arms a bit first, particularly my biceps. My arms are honestly like matchsticks. It's quite annoying.

Out of curiosity, what is the problem that you refered to in your first post?

    Ooops....

tbh this is a situation we should really be trying to advise on because we don't know the particulars of the case. One of the biceps main jobs is to rotate the arm and the greatest contraction usually occurs when you hand is supinated.

    Ok...

I understand that you need to know the particulars of the case, it just that I really want to start some arm exercises that don't involve me rotating my arm...

Any that could be suggested I would really appreciate...

If it helps to see the mini hula-hoops to figure out the name for them... you can see them on this
