Swimming in Dublin - Recommendations

Over the summer when I was abroad and the weather was good I did a bit of swimming for the first time in years and really enjoyed it.

I think it would be a really good way to unwind after work and keep up the level of fitness that avoids that run-down feeling.

I'm wondering if some of the posters here could recommend a pool that wouldn't be too busy weekday evenings and is within cycling distance of Dublin city centre.

I don't mind paying membership, I suspect it's a must, but would prefer to just pay for pool access rather than have to join a gym, most of the facilities of which I'll never use.

I considered putting this in the Dublin forum but thought there must be a fair few of the posters here living in Dublin and I'd have a better chance of getting first hand info.

Not a swimmer, but I occasionally work out in the Countess Markievitz gym (just behind Tara Street Dart station) and the pool never looks too busy to me.

Did a bit of a google on that one and it looks quite nice. Can you just walk in off the street and pay to go in there do you know?

Yes, both the gym and pool are pay as you go, or you can join for a few months.

I learned to swim in the Markivetz pool. It certainly gets the thumbs up for convenience but I find the changing rooms are always dirty which was a major put off. But as it is pay as you go, it's certainly worth trying at least once. My preference when I lived in Dublin was Westwood in Clontarf. 50m pool, clean, never crowded and good opening hours. The downside is of course a hefty membership fee. Another option in a couple of months is the sea!
