Stretching is good. Make sure you warm up first, it's not good to stretch cold muscles. Oliver Barteck's All around fitness. Koneman 1998, (which I use) has 38 pages on mobility training with explanations and photographs of all the min stretches:)

my advice as a personal trainer .
spend at least 10 min warming up!!!

do two sets of stretching for each muscle group hold first set for 30 sec, do not stretch to deep, concentrate on deep relaxed breathing.

for your second set , you can deepen the stretch more . holding again for 30 sec.

pause and relax for 20 sec between sets.
E.g. stretch quad's 30 sec , rest for 20 , same stretch again for 30 but stretching a little more this time, make sure u sue proper posture for all stretches....you can consult Google for that....also if you really want to get flexible consider a martial art , taekwondo has a lot of emphasis on high kicks and being flexible.
