    Hi,

    I've recently started back running after an extended absence. I've never been particularly fit but i've played alot of sport in my day. When running the other night i found myself gasping for breath within the 2nd mile at a mediocre pace. I was wondering if there's any way of expanding my lung capacity so that shortness of breath doesnt come so easily? Or just jog it out?

    Hi,

    Pardon any mistakes I make, I'm a bit rusty regarding the phraseology.

    I would run it out. When you do consistent cardio exercise (running a marathon as opposed to the 100m) you increase the efficiency with which your body processes the oxygen you take in while breathing. This is called your VO2 max, ie how efficiently you can get the oxygen into your bloodstream. As with most exercises the more you exercise the better you get. Obviously your lungs will most likely increase their capacity simply through usage but its mainly changing what you do with the oxygen rather than how much you can fit in your lungs.

    If you keep up running you will find it improves to more comfortable levels as you become used to running that distance or intensity etc.

    This doesn't have as big a bearing on more explosive movements (like sprinting) so just because you can jog 10 miles without feeling like your lungs are on fire doesn't mean you can sprint for 30 seconds.
