    Hey guys

Just started doing weights at home and i want some info on the best shakes to start taking for gaining muscle and weight.

Have read about maximuscle and nutrition x and maximuscle seem's a bit on the costly side.

Just wanted your opinion's on the best shakes to take and what are your recomendations.

    Thanks in advance;)

You may not get much response to this as there has been several similiar threads in recetn weeks - do a forum search and you should find any info you need.

And you're right, Maximuscle are expensive...

I'm going to recommend NutritionX Berry Blast whey protein. I've tried a few and this is the only one that tastes anyway reasonable.

That's just a whey protein though - if you're looking for gainers or anything else I can't really suggest anything, except don't buy Maximuscle Progain strawberry flavour - it's revolting!!

these are the cheapest and best quality. myprotein.co.uk

you can get plain or flavoured protein even blends like maximuscles cyclone( ithink they call it 'hurricane' instead though:D

they even have a rewards points scheme for buying protein and stuff you can use my code if you like MP32260 for a 5% discount

To him. He is offering an opinion. If you have links and such to lower prices then post them.

Other than that, i don't see the point of the above.

My point was, he stated they were the "best quality". Implying, nay, explicitly stating they're the best on the market. Opinions can't really be stated as fact can they?

I was just wondering if he had any links or studies showing that the quality of product offered by myprotein.co.uk is supreior to every other product on the market. It really is a fantastic business model if that's the case.

I like Optimum Nutrition's gold standard double chocolate. Some of my mates hate it though.

Is it time to do a sticky on protein shakes perhaps?

At a certain quantity www.bulkpowders.co.uk had the cheapest per kilo when I got mine ( I checked most major sites you see posted here).

i.e. if you are looking for 5kg an Irish place with free delivery might be cheaper, but once you get to a certain point/weight then it can be cheaper to pay for the delivery. e.g. I think bulkpowders have a fixed post price from some weight up to 25kg. So even if there is no apparent saving getting 10kg or 20kg, it is cheaper than getting 2 deliveries of 10kg separate. I split the post cost with a mate.

There is nothing magical about whey protein powder that real food proteins such as fish, beef, eggs, and cottage cheese dont have .The only thing about it though is that its very convient if you need something in a rush as who as time to cook 5 to 6 wholefood meals a day.Dont buy maximuscle protein powder, its too expensive.Optimum nutition whey is very popular and its cheap enough in most bodybuilding supplement shops

if you are just starting off your training there is no reason you need shakes, you will get just as much results from proper nutrition and proper training, when lifting concentrate on going slow up for 2 seconds down for 2 seconds rather than just banging them out, ull get better results.!!! believe it or not taking in to much protein does damage your internal organs .

You see, it's a lot easier to tell these things if you use the long sentences the first time round.

I use Hurricane XS and i ve had good strenght gains from it. Its tastes well and is very easy to mix. I use it mainly post workout.

I find Nutrition X doesnt mix aswel and less important is the fact that i feel they dont taste as good as www.myprotein.co.uk

I thought it was obvious from his post, and a fair question to ask.

Why shouldn't beginners take shakes? Sorrry but thats rubbish. Beginners need quick transportation of amino acids post workout as much as anybody. And taking too much protein wont do you any damage. You'll just pass the excess.

Because typically beginners will ONLY take protein. And treat it as a miracle muscle building supplement. And lash it back. And get barely any results because they have absolutely no idea how to eat to gain.

believe it or not taking in to much protein does damage your internal organs .

If you have some evidence of this I'd love to see it. Excess protein has, to my knowledge, no proven negative impact on an otherwise healthy individual. Those with pre-exisitng renal or liver damage or disease may find that an overload of protein produces more stress than their organs can handle in a diminished capacity, but for those of us who don't have that complaint we'll be perfectly able to handle some extra amino acids in our diet.

Too many protein shakes per day simple cause very expensive pee, and a belly if you're not training hard enough to put the excess calories to good use.

If a n00b wants to use protein, let them. There's nothing wrong with it, it won't do them any harm and they'll learn quick enough that it's not a magic potion. Sure didn't we all have to learn from our own mistakes?

The Great Supplement Debate will never go out of fashion, it's one of those things that people tend to be quite opionated about, plus there's soooooo many myths, innacuracies and plain ol' untruths about the various pills and powders on the market that for every one person that's enlightened about whey and anabolic steroids being two very different animals, ten more are equating a morning whey shake with Arnie-esque biceps in ten days or less.

As long as we have quality national newspapers using phrases like "creo-munchers" to describe school-boy rugby players who use creatine to enhance their game those great supplement urban myths will never die...

As we like to say around these parts, papers or it didn't happen!

Taking in too much protein CAN actually damage your internal organs.

I read that a guy ate 100kg's of the stuff in one go and his stomach exploded and his kidneys were found in a desert in Arizona.
    :p

i have to say that i agree with the papers describing schools rugby players as creo-munshers, i dont think its good for the sport of rugby that these players put so much emphasis on muscle and size and i might be wrong but hasnt the over use of creatin been proven to be bad?

anyway this isnt a rugby thread but some people need reminding that supplements are just that a supplement to the training, not the way to gain muscle
