The general civil service one was on www.publicjobs.ie

Then Revenue also advertise on their own site www.revenue.ie

And when the CSO are recruiting they advertise on their site www.cso.ie

Usually they're advertised mid Feb-early March. I have the information booklet if you want me to email it to you - send me a pm if you like.

Applications closed a couple of weeks ago :(

OP - i did term time a couple of years ago and i loved it. i was in 1st year of college and i should of stayed in the civil service cos i hate my course. i loved what i as doing, i loved the people there, they were laid back and easy going. it was busy and hard work at times but nothing over bad!

its great money for a student for summer work! most departments have flexitime which allows you to build up time off quite easily and you get a weeks holidays during the summer! not too bad IMO

Got a summer job with them as well a few years ago. They put me in the Revenue department and it was pretty good I have to say. They eased me in with mind-numbing file work and I got to do proper work then as I learnt about the section I was working in. Like dlambirl said the people in the office were great to work with, had a great laugh - i'd love to write loads about it.. They asked me back the following summer too which was useful.

From what I remember there were two people interviewing me, a man and a woman, who liked to smile alot. Got asked the usual questions, such as where I see myself in 5 years, what are my strengths etc. Didn't hear anything for a while after the interview and got a call out of the blue when I was working in another job - which I promptly dropped.

I interviewed for both last year, got Revenue, went in and then about 2 days later the CSO rang to see could I start there. Revenue was closer :D

It's pretty easy (and often boring) work for the money, very relaxed though and with flexi time you can virtually come and go as you please. I'm in with the CSO this Summer....can't wait not to be a broke student again!

Not sure about all the other departments, but where I am, we normally take on a lot of temps during the summer.

This year, however, we've been told we aren't getting any.

Frick, if i had of heard of this sooner I defintely would have applied :(
student work this summer is going to be pretty hard to find, and I was hoping of finding something good to put on my CV as working in a shop for past two summers isnt exactly employ me material :(

Keep a look out on publicjobs.ie and sign up for the job alerts. That way they'll email you when the announce the jobs..

I contacted public jobs and was told this was only offered to people who had applied in previous years , it wasn't readvertised?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 116 ✭✭line_of_fire

I have done it for the past two years and i loved it. However was talking to my friend who works full time there and she said that there is no chance of them taking on any summer students this year!

Aw I did it last year and it was fantastic! Great money too. I was half banking on getting in there again this year.

    hi

can you tell me how you go about applying to summer jobs in revenue? I see that there are general temp civil service jobs advertised on publicjobs.ie (which i have applied for) and wondered if revenue comes under that umbrella or is there a seperate application system, ie: do they recruit their own people?

    many thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭jd83

they used to recruit seperatly for temps but this year they are doing it with publicjobs.ie. There are 200 temp positions as far as i know there were 600 last year. But you wont be able to pick revenue. you just go were you are sent.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,160 ✭✭✭✭banshee_bones

got the email from publicjobs about summer jobs but it says on that revenue link posted earlier in the thread that they are not hiring, also couldnt find any careers section or recruitment link on the cso website either.

Revenue are hiring temps just not as many and instead of using there own site there using publicjobs through the open competiton for all dpeartments. So if you apply and get through the interview you will get sent to any goverment department. So if your looking to get into revenue apply and then thry might send you to revenue or an other department. Where you are sent is not up to you.

There are also 2 other Temp roles in the cso up on publicjobs.ie under the heading other carreer area

Apploed aswell, it was ajust a job of filling in that questionaire?!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 97 ✭✭Oakbark

    Just a quick question:

When filling out the form it asked for a preferred location, to which i chose Galway/Clare. However, I'm just as happy to work in Roscommon, but you can only select one area - should I re-apply for the separate area, or leave it be?

yeah i have the same problem, i would also work in dublin or galway but it was one or the other, so i had to pick Galway. I would say if you get to the interview you could bring it up then. Probably also make you look extra flexible and im sure they like that :)

    Hi,

Just wondering if public appointments will recruit for temp clerical officers? I worked there before so does that mean I'll get asked back faster than someone who hasn't been placed in a department previously?
Also I was wondering if (& when) I get asked back will it automatically be the same department or could I be placed in another one?
    Would appreciate any advice, Thanks!

The competition is open now for temp positions get on public jobs. Just because you worked there before doesnt mean anything, its all luck for you now.
Thats what i like about public jobs!
I worked there last year to, would love a job this year but hey its open to all. Best of luck to everyone.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 57 ✭✭ownknee

I know of people that worked there before, applied again for the temp jobs & they got preference because they knew the system & general workings of the department. Provided of course that they were actually good at the job.
One person I know rang in sick nearly every Monday, took half days when it suited & wondered why she didn't get another summers work after doing the interview.
I'm guessing that anyone who gets an interview & made a good impression from previous experience will have a distinct advantage.
In fairness it's bound to have a positive effect if someone has a proven track record & can do the job as specified.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭jd83

Yh i spoke to someone in publicjobs and they said that people who done it last year or are currently working as temporary co's would be higher up on the list. So dont know what that other poster is on about

Well thats what I'm hoping for. I'm sure the recruitment process is fair & all that but at the end of the day I'm sure every department wants someone who knows a small bit about what they are doing from previous experience.
Do you know if I was in Justice last year is it possible to be placed in Revenue this year even though I have relevant experience in Justice?

I don't know they never really Give you much choice where you go. Say it at the interview, I'd say a lot of peoe will end up on social welfare office this year anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭Elessar

Applied myself - though when I did it last time (summer 2006) there was no interview - I just showed up at dublin castle on the day, signed a few forms and was told to go straight to the revenue offices! Wonder are they interviewing everyone now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭jd83

I filled in the questionaire last year, then had an interview then they offered me a position for the summer. Then for every other contract up until now i have just been called to sign a crap load of documents then told to report to an office. So you interview to get on the panel then if you select your available through out the year also they will call you for contracts through out the year but you dont have to interview for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭theredletter

I filled out the questionaire there last night. I wonder how they pick people through that. I'd prefer if it was judged on a CV...

Would anyone know if having fluent Irish will help you get a job in the Civil Service? I'm willing to move anywhere for the summer to work cuz I need to pay postgrad tuition fees (eek); Meath, Kildare, Dublin or Galway would be my preferences!

    Cheers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭jd83

If you get an interview mention it. I dont know as most public office would have a few people that speak irish already. Yh im picking dulbin, but its a bit stupid the way you cant pick multiple locations. Maybe email them and ask them what you should do. they usually get back to you pretty quickly or give them a phone call.

What exactly do clerical officers do and where do they work?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,445 ✭✭✭jd83

They process paper work, work at information desks basically do all the clerical work in offices. They work in all different goverment departments and provide clerical support.
    Info

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭theredletter

cool, I e-mailed them there. I've always wanted to work in the Civil Service. This would be the best job for me! If I don't get it, next year is going to be a big struggle with MLitt tuition fees. Oh well!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47 Jr.Hero

did anyone receive an email after they completed the application?
also there's more than one region i would have been willing to work in, would it be best to apply again for another region or hope for an interview and mention it to them there.

So would you be standing at one of those windows dealing with the public?

Probably not as you would need training and knowledge of the job that you wouldnt have just starting out as a Temp. But they would probably have you processing Paperwork and stuff like that. Saying that one contract I did they put temps on a front office desk dealing with the public. In my current contract they dont let Temps on the public counter as we dont have the training. So i suppose it depends where ya end up.

Like its a decent job, decent wages paid weekly. You have the benifit of flexitime so you have to be there from 10 -12:30 and 2:30 - 4:30. You can can come and go as you please for the other hours. The people in the offices I have worked in have all been really helpful and nice.

You will usually start with a few other Temps especially in the summer so you wont be thrown in on your own. Plus they know your a Temp so they dont really expect too much from you! :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3 NFEH

JD83 you say you've worked in a few different places? Did you get these contracts pretty close after you finished the last? I came in as a temp in July for 6 months but they have extended me and I am now here 8 months but they can't tell me when I'm finished. Its pretty much until they replace people permanently.

Anyway if I got booted out of here soon is there a chance I could be asked to go somewhere else coz that would be great? I indicated I'd work all year around which is how I ended up with 6 months to start. I've also applied for this years TCO competition just in case I'm let go from here soon

    Tomorrow.

I didn't get an email back either, did it last year and its great.

Post here when people get anything else back from them (i.e. Interview date)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,756 ✭✭✭vector

did you (plural) really answer the online skills questionnaire truthfully?
I did because, aw shucks, I'm an honest john, however I guess that many others selected the most glowing answer to each question... excellent... excellent... excellent

and so I'm waiting for the "Thanks, but you didn't make the shortlist PFO" email

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,292 ✭✭✭✭Mrs OBumble

Do you think they might have a BS-er detector that automatically chucks out responses with unlikely combinations of answers (eg excellent at absolutely everything)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭LightningBolt

    It's the civil service, unlikely!

I applied and got a mail back when I filled out the questionnaire but doubt it means anything to be honest. If I don't get it I'll just head off for the summer instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,536 ✭✭✭Brimmy

I got a phonecall the other day from someone looking for some guy called Colm or something.. I thought it might have been then but the signal in my room is dodgy and it was 9am and I was still asleep..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

I applied, haven't gotten anything back yet, though. I was probably too honest on my application thing...
