Seriously, she's just way too nice with her "Heeey Dexter" and reminds me way too much of the stereotypical American 'mom' who thinks her kids are the greatest thing that has blessed the Earth.

Her niceness seriously bugs the hell out of me and with a bit of luck she'll be killed off. Lila (omg spoilers) was so much better!

I like Rita really nice woman, i hate Dexter's sister Debra though.
She should be next on his hit list.

I hate Lila as she's an ugly mutant, was watching Rambo and Rita was in that and looked hot!

I liked all three as characters, they really add to the story.
Lilah and Rita are aspects of Dexter, like his angel and devil, Rita is his ordered side with learned rules and morality and Lilah is the chaotic side.
Of course if Dexter submits to chaos he won't be a likable character anymore. Its a good conflict though.

Deborah is Dexters opposite, and what Dexter wishes to move toward.
She gets angry, he feels bad, she feels jealous, he feels bad, she feels worried, he feels bad. The connection with her and Mitzuke + Angel pushes him a little towards emotional growth.

i like rita she seems like a nice person, i ton't like lyla i have met too many women like her and are just destructive and insecure, his sister is a great character and has come leaps and bounds in the 2 series(don't like your one as an actress though), i think in general the characters and relationships are class and can't rememeber any relationships with that script writing standard off the top of my head besides lee adama and starbuck in the new 'battlestar galactica'

the thread title is "Does anyone else hate Rita?"

I really like Rita in the storyline. She has to be cookie cut good and moral so Dexter will feel guilt for how she will react if she ever finds his secret.
it pretty much was the reason why dexter didn't turn himself in, he realised the pain he'd put Rita and Deborah through if they where made known of his secret

She plays the part of a wounded single mother looking for a protector very well.

    Plus she's a total lasher.

I find her annoying at times but I don't mind 'cos I like looking at her. I'm tough to please.

As a guy I don't like the Rita character. The reason is I think she used the kids to keep Dexter. She was always saying the kids were asking for him, and he had a soft spot for them because of his ****ed up childhood/adolescence. She manipulated him in a way I've seen women do in real life.

Maybe this is just the bitter, fear of commitment part of me speaking but I REALLY saw her character do that to him.

I wanted her to turn out to be a drug lord of something and Dexter would have to kill her and then he'd have the dilemma of dealing with the kids.

I wish he'd beat her to death with a victims cold soggy apendage, she's a shíte actress at the best of times... far too over eager and just doesnt fit the part IMO

oh so do i, why couldn't dexter have arrived late :(

as a male, i cant possibly hate rita despite how whiney she has gotten... i still remember season one's tomb raider scene with fondness :)

She's far more eager and annoying in the books. I think Jennifer Carpenter plays her pretty well.

Rita must be the most annoying women I have ever come across on TV.

    SERIES 4 SPOILERS BELOW:
I was absolutely delighted seeing her dead in a bath in series 4.

MOD EDIT: DubiousDude, if "spoilers" are not indicated in the thread title - please put spoilers in spoiler tags.

Maybe that's why there's sexual tension between Deb and Dex? :P

    Every redneck's dream.

That shows a gross level of ignorance regarding Rural America.

Incest is purely a convenience thing for them...

I found her really annoying at first, but then she grew on me. I just saw the Season 4 finale last night and was like "whoah!" my mind was blown. The episode was wrapping up so nicely and then BAM
Rita's there in a bath of blood
. I felt so sorry for Dexter and Harrison :(

Like Rita, absolutely loathe Lila and think Deborah is really cool:). I'm watching the catch up on FX before they show series 4 ( i think). Really wish Dexter would kill Lila, she's such a pain with her " Dex -tuh!" Complete nut job.

I think the character is played well. She is a woman who has been through a lot of abuse at the hands of her junkie wife-beating ex-husband. Now she is free of him but she and her children would still have been affected by his actions even long after they have passed. It's only natural that she would want to protect them and I think she would even drop Dexter if she felt the relationship threatened her children in any way, despite the good and solidity he has brought to her. As I said, a natural reaction.

The children obviously like Dexter a lot. So far I have only seen the first two seasons but in the books their relationship with him takes a darker path as the books progress. Anyone who has read them will know what I mean. ;)
