    Is it just me or is the champion hurdle a ridiculously bad betting race this year........... Sizzing Europe 2/1 favourite haveing bet an 11 year old hurdler, Al Eile who never travelled, and a sick Jazz messanger; fine he has form when beating Osana at cheltenham when receiving 6 pounds in ground considerably worse than it will be next tuesday;

You might think my selection is mad but hear me out

Blythe Knight i have backed this horse on betfair all year at prices between 100 and 50s

Cruised past osana at aintree and seems to love the large crowds hard ground and frantic pace; he ran a terrible race in the fighting 5th beaten 35l but seemed to recapture form when being beaten by katchit at wincanton when travelling ominously well before blowing up on the run in availible at 14s for a place on betfair!!!!!!!!!

    Any toughts

another quick note look to silverhand in the triumph rounds 20s very good chance

Have always liked BK & I agree that 14s is a huge price for a place.... It's just that he's not really a Cheltenham horse I think, & Aintree's his gaff. Then again, if going is the good side of good on the day, an even better chance I'd say!

People will laugh at me, and throw rotting fruit.........but I fancy Harchibald.
I reckon he's a cert for a place at least.
And if he's ridden just off the pace, he might stick his nose in front for long enough to nick it.

mmmmmmmmm harcibald is always a sticking point!!! he will probably cruise up at some stage but what will he find i think losing in 2005 was as close as he will ever get!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 324 ✭✭BangBeater

    Harchibald? No chance.

According to all long term trends, then SE should walk the field. Any horse who ran an AIG Champion Hurdle, & couldn't settle in the race for the first 3/4mile and finished going away is a level above any of these I think.

    But, wait, place prospects? Yes.

I am siding with Osana, think the ground will suit him much better than in november and now meeting sizing europe on level terms, just don't think sizing europes jumping is good enough at this level.
If Da valira had a better run into cheltenham he would be up there with the favourites but if he is fit and well on the day has a chance of running into a place.

Osana why so low i need a form line thats not against SE!!!!!!! as mentioned before AIG was a bad race this year aging hurdlers past there prime

Kauto, hasn't beaten Denman. If denman was not in the race Kauto would be long odds on.
Osana has a line with Katchit it as well if you want to look at that but not really a line with any other irish contander.

in a discussion i had two months ago with none other than Ruby Walsh he said he expected Kauto to beat denman by at least 5 lenghts with denman another 5 ahead of the field there is only one thing that even has a chance of stopping kauto and that...................fences

sorry stretch i think you dropped something there......

Osana has the best form on offer i think. Beaten 4 lengths by Sizing Europe in the Greatwood while giving him 6 pounds, it was his first run of the season while Sizing Europe had had a run, albeit coming down at the second last. Osana's Bula win is far superior to SE's AIG win form wise as was shown by Katchit's Kingwell victory, SE beat Hardy Eustace who is now running in the World Hurlde, that says it all really.

Sizing Europe is a chaser in the making, not a Champion Hurdler, im beginning to think hes a place lay if hes goes any shorter.

...and Ruby had his choice of the two too.

I went for a Kauto, Denman forecast.

Sublimity from Sizing Europe and Osana.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 122 ✭✭tubey

Why do you think Sublimity will win?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,056 ✭✭✭applehunter

I hear Ruby is looking to get on De Valira.

    Price slashed already though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 295 ✭✭mccarte2

Anyone fancy Catch me at all? Didnt quite quicken up the hill last year but had a couple of decent horses behind him. The Red Mills he won wasnt the highest of quality though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

Sublimity from Sizing Europe and Osana.

Its impossible to win a Champion Hurdle on the back of that Bula run. He was lucky to meet two ageing horses last year, he hasnt a prayer this year imo.

He definitely has the potential to run a decent race i think, hes been coming along nicely and has some pieces of form that entitle him to have place chances for sure.

i think i am siding with osana and maybe a small bet for old time sake and the fact i would love to cheer him home on harchibald

the way I look at it sublimity-wise, the horse has run once since last march, a poor run in the Bula. No way could I back the horse on that basis ignoring the fact that last year's CH form is suspect to say the least (Inca, hardy and Detroit city cut each others throats and the proximity of afsoun brings up further question marks)

One worry about sizing eurpe is that de bromhead's runners at thurles yesterday ran like drains.

The more I look at the race the more I fancy Harchibald each way. However I'll wait til the day and possibly after seeing the time of the supreme before backing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 647 ✭✭✭ChuckProphet

I too will be backing harchibald. At least I'll have a sweat should he be cruising coming to the last :D
prob have an outsider e/w too

i think sublimity was a bit of a fluke result last year as he did nothing before or since

Last year just before Cheltenham I met a fella who worked in the yard of Sublimity. It was through work I met him I looked after his mother. Well he told me to beg borrow or steal money and put it on Sublimity. I backed €20 on it and was very happy I should have taking his advice though and backed more!

Whoever thinks Sublimity did nothing before he won the Champion Hurdle needs to read the form book. That said, my faith in the horse has been shaken by reports i am hearing from wise men in the past few days.

As such, Sizing Europe is a certainty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

Yes that 20 length win on heavy ground was Champion Hurdle winnning form for sure

as i said before 2/1 Harchibald to be placed is THE bet of the festival. Is there anyone that wouldnt like to see Harchibald get his head in front

Yeah....me. He's dirt...not a genuine race horse and a pathetic flat race at Dundalk is all the pig deserves.

Well I'm not sure of the answer but I wonder how many "pigs" and "not genuine racehorses" have won four grade 1 races and a grade 2 and come within half a length of beating a two time champion hurdler and 3 cheltenham winner in total. How come people always have a go at Harchibald because of this race and forget he beat Brave Inca in it.I know I know he cruised up and didn't win but some horses need to be beaten up to give their all while others will give it all on the bridle.I'd love to see Harchibald win as he is still the most exciting horse in the field and the most talented jumper.I doubt there would be many who don't enjoy his spectacular jumping when he is on top form which I don't think he was when Straw Bear beat him as early in the race you could see Paul Carberry was not going as well as he would have liked.

Shocking preparation though, dont know if its down to the trainer or injuries or what but its been a waste of a season.

I think straw bear is a better e/w choice than harchibald considering when the pair last met straw bear showed more grit and determination than the uninterested harchibald in saying that i think p. carberry is a bit to kind to harchibald in a finish. I would rather see N Madden riding him on tuesday:)

This whole statement is complete tripe. ( McCoy outfoxed Carberry and Harchibald, it wont happen again)

He'll probably ride Ebaziyan for Willie Mullins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,588 ✭✭✭Bluetonic

The race is declared already (2 days in advance is 'Overnight' for Cheltenham) and he's down to ride Catch Me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,669 ✭✭✭Colonel Sanders

apparently the owners wanted Davy Condon to ride if Ruby was available or not. Admirable on their behalf, and a pleasant change from the nonsense that goes on usually re. jocking people off horses.
