Just putting up a poll to see who fancies which of these 2 beasts (or does anyone think they can get these 2 beat).

I'll go first, I'm in the Kauto Star camp but would want 6/4ish at least to back him

In the Kauto camp too but this race will be a watching brief for me. The head to head is enough enjoyment for me.

Ya seem to be mad into the horses Colonel, I'm surprised you didn't follow fade2black, wbailety and da boys.

    For the record...

This race has such a build up to it that i think it may be an anti-climax...i.e. a faller or a major non-runner on the day.

I backed KAuto at 11-2 recently so I'm in his camp tho...

has to be kauto for me tho if i'm having a bet it'll prob be an outsider e/w for the interest. as a betting race it doesn't have much appeal

Def Kauto, been there done that.

Bold prediction - Denman will get around but won't finish in top three.

You backed Kauto at 11/2 for this years Gold Cup?
    When, 2 years ago?

Im on Kauto 100@ 6/4, bet with a friend.
I also have a tenner e/w on Halcon Generaldis at 40/1.

I'm a huge denman fan and i just hope he can do it, thought the hennessy was one of the performances of the season.
Would be good to see the Irish bred horses being at the top again.

must have backed it at 11/2 when he drifted on betfair when the injury scare broke?

I'm voted Kauto, but close and it's really one to watch

i am firmly in the kauto star camp and will be having my largest ever horse racing bet on him. hoping for maybe 5/4 or 11/8

I think if Sam Thomas sets a good gallop he can run the finish out of Kauto Star. If it's a dawdle, Kauto will pish it. Mossbank e/w for me, with a run!

Denman for me. You can't argue with Kauto Star as he has been there and done it so for that alone its understandable that the majority will go for him, even Nicholls is saying it ! But Denman has done nothing wrong and it can only beat what has been put in front of it, he's won races without even trying recently so I think he has plenty of scope to step up to it if need be.

Worst case scenario, do a reverse forecast with the two if you cant make your mind up ;)

Im siding with Kauto Star, running better speed figures than Denman which is pretty much all there is to go on at this stage. I honestly dont know how good Denman is but hes going to have to be the best chaser of the past 40 years to be able to beat Kauto Star. Man i cant wait for the festival!!!!!

I've been trying to dream up a situation where Exotic Dancer wins. Here it is. They've tried different tactics with him and they haven't worked (with regard to beating Kauto Star).
Now Denman is there and the pressure will be on him to set a strong gallop. Exotic Dancer can now sit in behind with Kauto Star and if it ends up a slog maybe Exotic Dancer will be the one as Kauto falters up the hill?

I cant see passed Kauto Star. I think Denman may try take the race to him to with the experienced Ruby on board he will be able to keep a close eye on his rivals

Exotic Dancer is rated 1lb superior to Denman at the moment on official ratings. If Denman makes it a real staying test Kauto's stamina might be put under pressure and if Exotic Dancer is better than Denman he might win.

Yeah I backed him a couple of saturdays ago...to be honest I watched him go to 2s...3s....4s...and thought about it...but then thought I could be throwing away my money cause where there's smoke there's fire....but then he went to 5s and 11-2....and I just thought....to hell with it!

I personally have a horrible feeling about the race...

    ...KAuto could fall....
    ...Denman would fall...
    ...They both could fall...
...one of them will be pulled out pre-race...

I dunno what it is...I just think it has anti climax written all over it.

im really looking forward to this race. cant really see past the big 2 unless one or both dont get around. think il back kauto but will wait another few days to do it!

pp's offering 6/1 today that any other horse wins the Gold Cup besides the top 2 (for anyone who thinks something strange may happen!!)

Better off laying both on betfair at the current prices (2.12 Kauto, 2.86 Denman)

    Denman
Exotic's been very close to him in the Betfair Chase at Haydock and in Gold Cup (both going left-handed), while going right-handed at Kempton, was well beaten, but not at the right trip... What this means for me, is that this horse, rated only 12 lbs lower than him, will also be very close to KS. It is certainly not just a 2 horse race for me as the market & general public assume.

Kauto Star to win. Ding-dong battle for 2nd between Den the Man & ED.

Went for Denman. They are both excellent but I would like to see Denman do it as he reminds me of another horse I used to like---See More Business. If they go to the last together Kauto should have too much speed for him but I would like to see Denman really push on from a long way out to give himself a chance.

or lay the top two on BF for 4/1 combined.

although, what difference would it make? yer still throwing your money away! :D

I don't follow jumps racing but I might have a bet on this. I haven't looked at the card but I'll want to know who will set the pace, if any. It wouldn't be the first time two horses battled for a lead and overdid it. From what I've seen Denman can front run.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,300 ✭✭✭nice1franko

I'm sure Ruby'll be happy to let him lead and then press the button one or two out.

I think Denman will sit on the heels on the leaders for the first circuit and then take it up and gradually start to wind it up and try and run the finish out of Kauto Star. If thats possible or not is another thing but i think they'll be well strung out from about 5-6 fences out.

Kauto to win chased home by Exotic Dancer with Denman 3rd, both horses have more class than 'the tank'

    Haha no way Richard

I think people are underestimating how good Denman is, it is possible he could smash the lot of them, he'd have to be a 190+ horse to do it but he might just be.

i am going to be there for this hopefully historic race -

heres my take on this -sam thomas will make 33 grand if kauto wins (his share of betfair million) similar if denman wins so he is the one who cant lose (unless denman and kauto cut each other throats)

denman is owned by a lengendary gambler (harry findley )
kauto is owned by paul nichols landlord (barber)

if you were in any way a creative writer im sure you could come up with a movie script along the lines of conspiracy theory -

the one person you would have to feel sorry for in all this is paul nichols as you would have to question where his priority lies -poor buggar having 1st and 2nd fav in a gold cup ,and even more so it being a classic year (ratings wise)-

personally i have always been against kauto(because he is french) and liked denman (because he is like the typical old irish chaser) personal choice

anyone who bets on this race wants there head examined as i think it will be one that needs to be savoured ,having a financial interest will only cloud your judgement and make bitter your assessment

but at the end of the day come next friday we all might be crying into our pints (but i dont think so)

    bring it on

Yeah i thought his price would shorten due to this.

Fair play to ladbrokes its nice to see a firm taking a view and actually sticking a price out bigger than the exchanges to back up that view.

Possibly more to do with Ladbrokes liabilities on Kauto Star than anything else.
Celtic were going Evens Kauto Star, 2/1 Denman all week in a last ditch desperate attempt to balance his liabilities.

My heart says Denman; he's the horse I'd prefer to be on if I was riding!

I think there's been so much focus on the Denman/Kauto Star battle that something like Exotic Dancer has been overlooked....

I think the most value in the gold cup is betting without the top top runners,
E/W on a longs odds means top 5 out of 12 will do for a nice return
