I'm probably going to choose; Biology, Physics and Accounting or Business. It's a tough decision to make unless you're sure of a future career. Are You?

It's very tough trying to pick now for something that will not happen for another 2 to 3 years time. My only advice is sit down and think what you would like to do, ask career guidance and older family members - there is a lot of help out there, its your life so don't rush in, think long and hard about it!

If you are more into Business, pick these and languages, if you are into science, nursing pick in the science area's etc... Best to ask around but one thing not to do is pick what your friends are doing because this will only hold you back from what YOU want to do and your friends will be there for the other classes anyway that you all share! GOOD LUCK, I have a daughter doing her JC and this is the advice I have given her, she wants to do primary school teaching so I told her to pick subject with the help of career guidance that will help her get into St Pat's or the like!

I'm looking to avoid doing TD and Construction Studies.

I was thinking of doing German, Geography, History and Biology but I have no idea what kind of standard of work is expected as every one has been saying that the difference between JC and the LC is massive.

    I'm definitely doing German, though.

It really depends on how interested in the subject you are, even if they are difficult if you enjoy them it will be half the battle! German is good to keep you options open, languages are always looked for and can give you a big advantage - go for what you want and do ask advice too!

I don't do either of these, but from the sounds of it, history means a LOT of writing. You'll want to really love essays.

If you're mathsy, physics is better.
If you're alright with learning lots of stuff off, biology is for you. That seems to be what people say, anyway.
I do physics and the maths isn't terribly difficult, but there is a lot of it.

Ive done TG for the last 3 years and im allowed to do construction studies but i dont really know what it consists of:confused:

The way are school goes is that theres 5 classes from 1st through 3rd year. Its broken up into bands i.e Higher,Middle and Lower.Higher chooses in 1st year between Art,TG or Classical Studies.
Middle is the same and Lower chooses Art or Metal/Wood Work.

But for the last few years there was no TG in LC in our school but for next year there will be a course called Design Communication and  (Soz cant remember the last one:o lol)

Its a third TG,third CAD and the other third is a project.
Sounds intresting but ofcourse im doing TY so ive another year to wait !!

I'm doing chemistry, physics and music with french as my language. A bit torn between music and geo, I really like them both but got the exact same mark in the pres, just wondering what anyone else would have gone with?

Music is much more fun imo and I do both. There's a surprising amount of work in bith, but you have the practical side in music which makes up 50% of your result in the LC. If you're any way musical, it's grand. Geography is grand too, but the amount you have to learn and write is really underestimated, but you have the project which takes up 25% of the result methinks, or else it's 15%. Hope that helps!

I did my LC in 2007 last year, here's my honest opinion.

I did Music, French, Home Ec and Biology.

I found Biology the easiest, because I'm good at learning stuff off. If you liked Junior Cert Biology, you'll like Leaving Cert Biology. I got an A1 in Higher from literally regurgitating learnt off stuff. Some of the course is boring, but I found most parts interesting enough. You'll get boring parts in any subject though. If you're a good memoriser, it's an easy A1.

I hadn't done JC Music so taking it up for LC was tough, however by the end of 5th year I'd caught up with the rest of the class who had done JC. Having not done JC Music I wasn't sure what the standard had been, according to them LC is a LOT harder than JC. I found it difficult enough, you do need a good sense of music to get by. I knew nothing about Music starting but I had an alright grasp of what it should sound like going in, I came off with a B2. The set works are mostly learning stuff off, that's 25%. The practical is 50% which really helped, I reckon I picked up a lot of marks there. The composition bit is the hardest, that's where it gets really hard and it can stress you out if you forget it's only 25%. I ended with a B2 which I was happy enough with, could have done better though. I'd recommend Music, it's a lovely subject if you love music, but don't go in thinking it's gonna be easy!

One piece of advice I can give is DO NOT PICK HOME EC. You might think you're going for easy points, but it's literally too boring to study. I picked it cos I knew I'm good at memorising stuff but I found studying Home Ec and trying to learn it off so boring I couldn't soak any of it in. It is literally too boring to study, and not one person in my whole year at school enjoyed it. Everyone regretted picking it. EVERYONE. Just don't even go there. I got an A2 in the end through sheer learning off, although it almost killed me. Just don't do it!

Some stuff I picked up from friends doing other subjects:
I regretted not picking Geography, it seemed like an easy A1 for good memorisers. I'd advise people going into 5th year to go for Geography, it's not too much work.

Don't pick Physics or Chemistry unless you're really passionate about them. I actually did Chemistry for a month in 5th year before switching to Home Ec, I found it unbearable. Some people in the class adored it cos they love Chemistry by nature. It's up to you, but don't choose it cos you can't think of anything else to pick, it's a tough one! A friend of mine did Physics and couldn't have hated it more. It's not easy by any means, and it's really geared towards those who want to study Physics after school. Another friend of mine loved it but he's doing Physics in college now so obviously he just loves Physics!

Art is very different to JC Art. There's a big focus on Art History (37% if I remember correctly), which apparently is extremely boring. The practical part is hard but allows huge scope for creativity, if you're arty in any way go for Art, but expect the boring history to come as well!

Which brings me on to History... I originally picked History but I didn't get to study it because of a timetable clash, and man, was I glad I escaped that one! I loved JC History. LOVED it, and so did all my friends. They went on to do LC History when I didn't, apparently it is VERY different, for some reason it's supposed to be horrific. Don't ask why, that's what they said!

Out of the Business subjects, Business itself seems to be the most enjoyable. Economics is seemingly the roughest, which I found surprising.

    Any more questions PM me!

    I've chosen Physics Chemistry Biology...
Alot of people here are choosing 2 sciences here, I picked the three because I'm not entirely sure what I want to do after. I would be thinking along the lines of nutrition, or med if i could get the points! You need chemistry for both of these and as you could imagine biology would be a big plus. I still want to keep the option of engineering open, and anyone whose done it will tell you its not possible without leaving cert physics.

And finally, by doing Physics Chemistry and Biology you are open to EVERY course in the country after the leaving cert. ie. I hate business but if I wanted to go into it after the leaving cert. theres nothing to stop me.

I've picked biology, chemistry, geography and business. i'm doing german for an hour a week outside school though. going to sit the pass paper just to have it for any entry requirements!
None of my choices really tickle my fancy though :( ah well, such is life i guess!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

LC is much easier if you like your subjects, I find. Studying something you enjoy isn't work.
Of course if you don't like any of the subjects it's just unfortunate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 64 ✭✭Mazda

yeahh i agree. i do like them, but none of them get me really excited! hehe..

Choose Business - it's a really interesting subject and isn't too diffucult, I've enjoyed it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12 Sabrina411

Im choosing business, history and physics and of course im doing german aswell!:D

I decided on physics because i enjoy it and on history because im thinking of doing law and through research discovered it could be useful...and i love business!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 468 ✭✭aine92

I've chosen Chemistry Biology and Home Ec, then the core Irish English French, i had chosen Geog but i dropped it for HEC apparently its easier points? I want 2 do Med when i leave so the more points the better...
Its most important 2 choose subjects you like and are good at rather than easy ones i think??

    Good Luck 2mra everybody!!:eek::)

My advice is avoid all science subjects like the f@cking plague unless you have a head for it. Social sciences all the way for me. History and geog are class if you have the interest.

Irish, English, Maths, French, Biology and Music.

    History or Geography
    Physics or Economics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 676 ✭✭✭ayumi

now after doing economics,I regert taking it and I was fooled by pple saying its an easy subject, home ecs marking scheme is easier

230 for written and 40 for the journal out of 320 marks while economics you have 400 marks!

home ec at junoir was easy and when you look at the leaving ert exam paper its quite easy to get an A or B,I got an B in junior cert
and now I wonder what Ill get in economics(ord maths, english and irsh) and there is like 18 or 16 in my class and its the only 5th year economics class, also I wont be able to do home ec now as I missed the first month

    I SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO REGERT TAKING ECONOMICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please don't take anything at Junior Level as a prediction for Leaving. They are entirely different exams - one designed to maximise everyone's results, the other to differentiate between candidates.

yeah but I looked at the exam questions @ examanations and home ec was far easier.

    what subjects are you doing?
what do you think I should now?

I chose biology, chemistry and physics and I might do agricultural science outside school in 5th year.

what you get in science junior cert conor? How ya findin the lc subjects now? Obviously not too demandin if you're taking an extra one!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 605 ✭✭✭aliqueenb

hey guys for anyone trying to choose this year, just thouht i'd tell ye about my subject choices and how i'm getting on in 5th year lol. all honours:
irish, learning notes basically on poems so far which is grand because i can learn but ask me to speak any and i'm like ehh nil! much better teacher than had for jc so i now have a more positive approach ( not coming into class with "omg irish is such a dead language, though i still thinkshouldnt be compulsory till lc, only to jc")

maths, OMG what a jump from junior cert maths, it is unbelievable, granted i did ty so its all bit foggy but i generally did forget maths always after summer anyways, yeah maths is soo hard even so far, alot of effort.

english, 2 poets done so far out of 6, seen as teacher has been out or 2 weeks

german, grand so far, but thats cos we havent realy touched on essays yet, just debating and passive basically, and spent last 2 summers in german college so its all sehr leicht fur mich:P

business, note taking , exam papers, marking schemes already lol, all grand though, just learn and take care of marking system, how many points of info you need etc, and timing

history, well:D lmao 50 pages of a4 hardback notes written already and my writing is notoriously small. 1 essay for monday and essay test 45mins monday:O but i love history and my teacher, total legend really

geography, another lovely teacher, so nice, notes, SRP's, learning off, weirdly we dont use the book alot, we mostly take notes from powerpoint thingy teacher has of the whole course

religion . lol yeah religion, the sophists, socrates, plato, natural philospohers, aristotle, morality, essays, like history essays are easy to write at home with time no exam pressure and a book in front of you, but will take getting used to writing big long essays in that time
SOOOOOOOOO glad i chose to take it on as an extra subject though cos maths is just like WOOOOW and grinds are tres expensive these days and religion is being done just our class as extra subject as none of us do lcvp

very much blessed with great teachers, and no its not a grind school or even a private school, all schools can be good:D

    so there you go lol
    insight into 5th year work
and too all those tys, hmmm make the most of what you have now, have fun, meet new peeps, bulk up your cv, earn some money. BUT that said maybe go to more than like 10 maths classes in the whole year because in 5th year you might find yourself seriously wondering how you managed that A in honours maths even in the junior cert along with 8 other subjects lol

Im doing those subjects, apart from French. I dropped my language and picked up Business. I love them all. Chemistry is my favourite :D only moved to History last week (3 months into 5th year - smart move :P) but it's pretty good so far. Biology is grand as well. Pretty easy to pick up if you listen in class methinks :)

I'm currently in TY and am finding it hard to make my decision on which subjects to do myself.

The following is what I'm considering right now.
    English
    Irish
    Maths
    ---
    French
    Economics
    Geography
    Biology or Physics

    Although things could easily change.

Im doing my junior cert this year and was wondering when do you have to pick your subjects ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

It depends on your school. If you're doing Transition Year next year you'll pick sometime then. If not, you'll do it before the end of this year (as before June), it just depends on what system your school uses - I imagine the bigger the school, the earlier you'd have to pick so they can sort out timetables and all that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7 .JamEs.

Im definitely not doing TY. I don't even know what I want to do when I'm older :( Theres no subject I peticularly like, I just want a job where I don't have to stay in a office all day...I'm lost lol :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

Hm TY is good for resolving those sorts of dilemmas. : p
And well, when you're picking your LC subjects the only things you need to keep in mind are really:
If there's any chance you may want to study science, do at least one science subject. (And within that if you want to study medicine do biology, if you want to study veterinary, do chemistry, etc. Check these things with your career guidance teacher!)
Do a foreign language... in general. Not all colleges require it I THINK, but most do.

So you don't have to know exactly what you want to do when you're older or anything. People in 6th year don't even know that, for the most part. : p
Beyond that, the other subjects (Business, Geography, History, Art, etc.) aren't specifically required for any courses, so feel free to choose whatever you enjoy in school.

Every school is different. In my school we had meetings with our principal to try and sort out subject lines in March I think?? Then as soon as they were sorted we got to choose! We got talks from all of the Leaving Cert subject teachers aswel to help us pick what we wanted to do :)

if your looking for easy points do the following : agricultural science and geography...if your a fast writer and good at learning off stuff then i would strongly advise history also

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 111 ✭✭Tevez101

also no-body should pick either physics or chemistry if your not able for it...big waste of time so dont fool yourself at the time if picking because u should know at that stage whether your able for them or not

I did geography for the first 3 months of 5th year. I hated it but was getting very high grades (all A's). I picked it because it was an "easy" subject but found that it bored me cos i wasn't interested in it at all.
Best thing, in my opinion, is pick subjects you enjoy because if you're like me you'll work a lot harder at them!
