    Everyone has made this very complicated when it's not.
    When talking about time signatures you need to first find out where the 1 is. By that I mean where is the down beat in the tune?

    Count 1 2 3 4 out loud and say the 1 louder then all the other numbers then you have 4/4.

    Same with odd metre counts 1 2 3 4 5 again stressing the 1 louder then all the other notes.

    If you have a riff for example and you don't know what time sig it's in, get a metronome set it to 4/4 and play the riff along to it. If it doesn't fit or sounds a bit off in the 4/4 setting then listen back and count where the 1 (First note) is and count from there until you get to the end of the riff.
