Most bodybuilding sites say you can only do one or the other. But what if you only have a small amount of fat to burn and only want to gain a small amount of muscle?

burning fat is about burning more calories than you eat, gaining muscle is about gaining more calories than you burn, thats why this is said, it can be done but is very hard and its better off focusing on 1 then the other when the desired level is reached imo. people who try both usually get nowhere as the diet is not meant for either!

I have always found a decent fluctuating macronutrient plan will help with both. Eat for your daily activity and you should be okay.

You can have a good read about what i mean below :

I would say that you can add muscle when burning fat, easy. How much is the real question. I have been building muscle and losing fat for several months now, with not much cardio. If you think about it, if you are lifting weights with progressive overload over a period of time, it's a physiological certainty that your body will build muscle.

For a newb, yes I would definately agree. Hell even for the average guy in the gym I think it's doable.

But Moving up towards an advanced level CNS adaptation becomes one of the main determenants of max strength, so theoretically you could lose some muscle and still get stronger too I guess.
