Just to follow on from a thread (didnt want to hijack), I'm a guy looking to work on my abs and general core, but the twist is that I hurt my back in November 07 so things even as simple as a sit-up can be quite painful, as I feel the strain in my back very easily. Any advise would be great. 22 male, 5ft 11in, slight build (11st 10). I do some cardio in gym but weights etc havent been happening lately...thanks

have you talked to a physio?

Yeah I talked to a fairly useless one who said "to go work on my core". The back problem wasnt too serious, just sent it into spasm which resulted in a few days on the floor and some painkillers for a week. It feels more weak now than painful...

do you use a fitball when doing situps?

i would got to a good physio, if it hurts to do a sit up i would think you need a specific routine.

I went to a place called Southside Physio, near Foxrock Church when I had a sore back. They were quite good.
I cant remember all the things they had me doing but one was to lie on the floor face up and alternatively raise up and hold each of my legs. Then there was various stretching exercises for the back. It did the trick after a while.

EDIT: I was looking at Aye's location when I wrote this not the OP's .....

Seriously, get to a good physio.

There's so many things that can go wrong with your back it's really impossible to try and prescribe exercises online to help. It could be tightness in any or several of the muscles in your legs causing it, it could be dormant glutes, it could be more serious like a bulging disc or something.

All of the above might present simiarly (ie pain in the back) all are VERY different and required individual target treatment.

oooh sorry to hear that. probably following on from my post was it about trunk twists etc?

I hurt my back in October.. well had been suffering since July and just thought I was in dire need of a massage as i was getting them so regularly in college but as it turns out at the start of October, I was coaching one night and from the waist down went numb and was having problems with feeling in my arm from the Brachial Plexus nerve roots etc.

So turns out I compressed Cervical & Thoracic/Lumbar (T12/L1) vertebrae and to be honest Im still not right. Backs to take a while to sort themselves out and also i think it's a defense mechanism from the body. What's most frustrating for me is that this is what I study in college, how to treat spinal injuries etc.

Best thing I've done is swimming since I do find it puts too much strain on my back to do my normal work that I'd do for my abs. Since I've been young though and in my early gymnastics days (started when i was 6 just 7), I was always thought to "suck and tuck". So i always tend to stand with my stomach tensed/suck in and bum tucked under to help decrease the Lordosis (spinal curvature in my back). For me anyway since I can't do too much exercise for my back I try to just make sure that my posture is always correct

I dunno if this helps, just thought i'd give my input as I'm in the same boat!
