AFAIK if you're talking about permanent colours you can't just take out the dye, you'd have to strip down the colour completely using a peroxide based product, and then either keep that colour or put a colour similar to your natural colour over it.

If you're using semi-perm dyes then harsh shampoos and even washing up liquid will strip that out quicker than the 6-8 weeks.

Does this really strip the colour? I use it occasionally when my own shampoo is all out.

To strip your colour you're much better off doing it professionally. Need to bleach and then re-colour to your natural shade

Head and shoulders doesn't strip colour from your hair anymore than any other shampoo. I use it all the time.
Stripping your hair of colour will ruin it for ages, make it all dry and breakable. Best go to a salon and get it done than do it yourself.

Are your colours semi or permanent? I've heard of Colour Zapp, but I understand its an American thing so you might need to import (and be wary of the peroxide levels).

I had until recently dyed black hair (many layers of permanent shades of black, red-black/blue-black etc etc over the years) Naturally I'm very very dark brown.
I managed to get from black to bright bright red in one evening by using B-Blonde followed by XXL Colour (in a very very bright red- I forget the name) by Schwartzkopf (?sp).

Now I have to say I have very resilient hair, and it has taken really well, with no frazzling, which I was expecting. I've not bleached my hair for decades- only darkened which might have something to do with it, but I have to say its been a breeze. I wouldn't recommend for anyone with fine hair/bad condition hair though.
As I mentioned I bleached first- which wouldn't give you a blonde, just a cute ginger- but not where I wanted to be! so I dyed red straight after (literally 5 minutes).

I have unintentionally found that using Tresemme volumising shampoo strips colour :o So if you looking for dulling this might help, but other then that, if your looking at lightening significantly bleaching is your only option.

If you want to lighten to a 'natural' blondish shade, I'd consult a professional, just to be sure. After- its their job to know what their doing.

I just like to play, and I know my hair could take it at this stage :)

    Good luck! :D

I'm trying to get rid of blonde highlights. The roots are getting unbearable now though as I've been growing out for 4 months! So I was thinking of getting a 6 week semi permanent dye and putting it over it. Tried this morning with Boots Botanics and it did absolutely nothing to my hair. What a waste of 9 euro.

Apart from Head and Shoulders, you can use Timotei, I had dark dye in my hair and wanted to lighten it and the hairdresser recommended Timotei to be used for the 2 weeks prior to getting my colour done, as whatever chemicals in it, they help the new colour bind. I am sure its prob to do with sealing porous hair or something.

As for Colour removers, have used them myself, years ago when I was a student and not able to afford a hairdresser. Your hair is like straw after, and no amount of condititioner or treatments helps. The remover strips your hair of 18-MEA which is very important for keeping your hair in good nic. Dye also strips hairof this so basically your damned if you do anything with your hair.

If you do go ahead and strip your hair, make sure you take a good skin hair nails supplement, that contains biotin, as this will help strengthen your hair from within and promote growth.

    Hope this helps

I had the same problem last year, blonde highlights on brown hair.
I used Garnier Movida Semi-Permanent Dark Brown ( no35) and it covered everything. Its not too expensive either I think it was €7.50.
I also had the added bonus of never having to worry about my roots ever again. I wash my hair everyday( I know thats bad) and it lasted almost 4 months. I probably didn't even need to re do it but I was just a bit paranoid that the ends of my hair were going very red.
I have auburn in my hair anyway so thats probably coming through
That was last may and I have only used it 3 times.
I used the lighter brown (No25) the second time as I found the first one way to dark but once it settled in and was washed a few times it was ok.

Going back to the OP , Head and Shoulders or any other anti dandruff shampoo will dull coloured hair. In fact I think thats true of any shampoo thats not specifically for coloured hair.

Long story short as to why I need to get my hair back to its original colour,
the hairdresser I used to go to let her clueless niece apply the base colour I was getting with my highlights.
My hair is medium brown so blonde highlights were a bit too high maintenance so tried have a base colour too.
Anyway got no satisfaction from hairdresser when I phone back about my dark roots, she knew she was in the wrong and told me to come back and she would take a look. I said no way unless she could fix it and I didn't want it redone so soon. So I asked her if I could buy a colour and do it myself so she told me go to Boots and ask advice as the girls there are trained and she told me to go for a chocolate brown rather than chestnut as that would just make the red worse.

Well naturally my hair would not be as dark as yours, I'm more a dark blonde (it's kind of a hair colour ya can't restrict to one name to be honest!) ....and if I dyed my hair brown I would look awful as I am very pale skinned. Any semi permanent colour advice?!?

Pantene also strips the colour from your hair....apparently.

I tried this last year as I'd black dye in my hair and wanted to go back to brown. I tried Head and Shoulders and it faded it a bit but Johnsons No More Tears shampoo was the best. It definitely faded it more quickly.

Put Fairy Liquid on dry hair, massage it in and then rinse. You might have to do it a few times.

Oh well I was talking about my own as I didn't think it would work seeing as the colour differences in my hair were so drastic.
I am very pale too but my hair is brown and nothing I can do about it for the moment.
Definitely go with the Movida range and pick a colour close to your natural colour. It doesn't dry out your hair either the way highlights do.
The conditioning creme that you put on afterwards its great and your hair will feel fab afterwards .

Just dye the highlights to the same shade as your natural colour. No need to strip the hair or anything. Just cover them with a permanent colour.

I know nothing about dye and hairdressers....so this may be a really obvious question...but can you get a semi permanent dye job at a salon?

Yes but there's still no guarantee it'll cover the highlights. And it would still only last six weeks at most. You could get a tint done that's as close to your natural colour as possible, or lowlights.

Thanks Dizzyblonde. Think I'll make an appointment and have them take a look and see what's the best option.
