Workout music

I got myself a new MP3 player at the weekend and will probably use it most at the gym, so what sort of music do people like to listen to while working out? I've found it needs to be quite energetic music (drum n bass, i guess) and loud to drown out the gym's own stereo (there's 1 guy in there who leaves it on radio when he's on, who can work out to news reports?!) but my old MP3 player was filled to the brim with 80s rock ballads (Up Where We Belong, Walking On Sunshine, Flashdance) and the Rocky Soundtrack (oh Lord)/

So what do you workout junkies recommend on the old personal 'stereo'?

It depends on what I'm doing!

When I lift weights I'd normally listen to some fairly heavy metal like Exodus or Megadeth. Sometimes Muse.

When I'm running slowly it's Whitesnakes song Here I Go Again on repeat.
And when I run at a high tempo I'd listen to some hard trance like Yoji, Scot Project or Ilogik!

The Prodigy (music for the gilted generation) does the job for me.

Cue some loser stating that we all have 'awful tastes in music', followed by some offended soul stating that 'Music is subjective'

prodigy, chemical brothers, some 60's garage band music with good beats- white stripes sort of stuff.

Get sound isolation earphones and you can drown out other music in the gym, and spare your ears since it can then be put lower.

All dance music, progressive stuff, nice beats, and energetic too. Has to be moderately uplifting but the beat is the most important thing.

Bit of Nashville Pu$$y, Motorhead, hell even some 'hopeful' Coldplay songs (Square One, for example!) are lashed on there.

This looks like it's going to be a winner.
Death to the Pixies is also great.
    The Hold Steady.
    The GO! Team.
Maximo Park - A certain Trigger.

I always find some emo-ish music to do the trick, heavy in places with uplifting hooks!

    Go get "Crisis" from 'Alexisonfire'

Pretty ****ing awesome for weight training and running! Dance music is wicked for running too but I find some decent chorus sections can help me push it that bit further ya know!

Generally speaking I'm a death metal fan though with a passion for good dance music. :P

Two songs I love to workout to are 'Rob Zombie - Dragula' and 'Eminem - Run Rabbit Run', those songs have amazing beats.

Something loud with guitars when doing strength training-(Nirvana, Pink Floyd The Wall, Zeppelin, Kansas, Foreigner, the Chillies, etc.,). Something softer when grinding out lots of sets -(Duran Duran, Timbaland, The Verve, etc.) Somthing with a beat when doing cardio (any good chart stuff Nelly Furtado, Kanye West, etc,):)

A great song for getting the blood going is "Rosetta Stoned by Tool"

Fantastic song, and in conjunction with the first part of the song is around 20 mins long. Personally I only like the 2nd half as its all music unlike the first half.

Would also recommend Vicarious (from the same album 10,000 days).

yeah i used to listen to a LOT of older Jay-z stuff, that man is king, and I still find it handy for light weight-higher reps, but for really pushing out those last few reps on heavy weights, nothing beats a bit of metal even if your not into it, just pure punishment music! :D

Fighting my way back - Thin Lizzy

Me and a college mate were having this discussion only a week ago through txt messages, here is what we came up with as a good choice of tunes:

Madonna - Jump, and 4 Minutes
Most stuff recently that has T-Pain in it
    Timbaland's album Shock Value
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Hump the Bump
Usher - good for a cooldown
Tiësto - Elements of Life album
Queen - Another One Bites The Dust
Guns n Roses - Paradise City, and Welcome to the Jungle
    Marylin Manson - Beautiful People
Linkin Park - so many songs to choose...basically most of the "Hybrid Theory" and "Meteora" albums
Limp Bizkit - Break Stuff, and Rollin'
Eminem - The Eminem Show and Encore albums
Kanye West - Stronger, Homecoming, and a few others
Justin Timberlake - too many to mention here

and that's just what we could think of in 5 minutes. I would personally add in alot of dance music, Faithless, Fatboy Slim, Daft Punk and strangely enough, Cascada's album is very good to workout to.

Anyone get the feeling recently that Ministry of Sound is more or less on autopilot at this point? Their compilations are getting BORING in my opinion... mostly they are just picking the top stuff off beatport, the minimal blippy junk, either that or commissioning dance cover versions of whatever crap is in the UK charts. Anyway. These days I prefer artist albums or compilations like this series (direct iTunes link) http://electricnation2010.com/tracks

    What works for me:

    The Prodigy,
    Chemical Brothers
    Eminem

    Older stuff,
    Stiff Little Fingers,
    Lou Reed,
    Sex pistols,
    Showing my age I know.

Always finish each session or race to Wager's Ride of the Valkyries works as a bit of a performance cue for me.

I dont use my ipod whilst lifting, i find the cables and stuff get in the way.
