Whats on your shopping list?

I know g'em has a great post here on the basics but just wanted to get a wider idea on what everyone keeps in their cupboards!

Or more importantly.. what do you buy? Where do you do your shopping?

How much do you spend? And from what you buy are you sorted for the week, how many meals do you get from that one shop/spend?

I really (understatement!) need to vary my diet and im looking to pick up some ideas from you kind folks! At the moment (at least when im in work) I usually have about 3 sandwhiches (6 slices brown bread ) over the course of the day - 10 hours shift so spread out a bit, mostly with tuna and a little mayo or else maybe ham and cheese or something... but I know this isn't the best for me.

Maybe if I start eating like you guys I can start working out like you guys and eventually start looking like... well, I won't go that for just yet :D

WOOOOOOOOOOAH that is TOO freaky. I came online to open a thread the exact same. I'm primarily curious as to how much people are spending per week on food.

I go to the Farmer's market in Temple Bar every Saturday and buy about 2 dozen eggs (hen and duck), lots and lots of vegetables, depending on what is in season. Lots of cauliflower, beetroot and brussel sprouts at the moment. Some organic meat, cheese, oats, nuts, flaxseeds, olives and olive oil, maybe some hummous or anchovies. Some game if they have it.

Then I go to Tesco and buy more vegetables and nuts, family stuff like milk, cereal, bread, fruit. More meat, chicken drumsticks, fish, goat's milk, 0% fromage fraise, greek yogurt, sugarfree jelly.

I usually get cottage cheese in Lidl, along with some cold meat or fish for lunches.

If I'm going Southside I'll buy some Lindt 99% chocolate in Fallon & Byrne or Avoca. That's my treat.

    Porridge oats.
    Bananas.
    Mushrooms.
    Chicken fillets.
    Smoked salmon.
    Chicken tikka.
    Tins of tuna.
    Brown rice.
    Wholewheat pasta.
    Cheese.
    Eggs.
    Mince (sometimes).
    Brown bread.

I'm lucky though, I live at home so I can just add this to the family shopping list. And stuff like the chicken tikka smoked salmon is a good bit cheaper in Lidl! Get eggs in the market.

This is my weekly shop and it costs about 50ish euro. I do a monthly shop which includes all the other stuff like Pasta, Rice, noodles, olive oil, cereals and pasta sauces and the like. The most expensive items are obviously the meats. Chicken is very overpriced in this country, so i tend to buy more Turkey than Chicken these days. Unfortunately i dont eat fish or eggs but i never find variety too much of a problem.

Several people have mentioned mince here. I presume many are buying lean mince too which can be quite expensive. I buy cheap cuts of steak, round, rib or cheapo "minute" steaks (with no cut given, I presume round?). I then trim all the fat off- have a look to see if it will be easy to cut it off before buying. Some rib steak is very "marbled" and hard to remove the fat, round steak is easy.

Then I get a good big scissors and start cutting the steak up into small bits. I use this in spag bol type dishes (minus the spagetti), or in currys & stir frys.

It ends up cheaper than buying the lean mince, also ends up with less fat, and at least you get to see the cut that went into the dish.

I also sometimes liquidise it and make burgers, using iceberg lettuce instead of a bun.

    www.branaganmeats.com

Check the above link out. They sell the cheapest and best quality meat I've ever tasted. It's a wholesale butchers with a trade counter and they deliver! 5oz chicken fillets are €1 each. Fillet, rib-eye, striploin, sirloin and minute steak are all reasonably-priced too. Since I started going to Branagans, I cut about €20 off my weekly shop... yet I am eating better than ever. (BBQ rib-eye is on tonight's menu. Can't wait.)
