Gym closing time

My gym opening times are as follows, as stated on the contract, internet and various leaflets.

    Opening Times:
    • Weekdays: 6.30am - 10.00pm
    • Fridays: 6.30am - 9.00pm
    • Saturday: 8.00am - 8.00pm
    • Sunday: 8.00am - 8.00pm

Usually I get there on a weeknight (Mon - Thurs) between 9pm and 9:15pm, which in theory should give me 45-60mins, if the gym closed at 10pm as stated.

Depending on the gym personnel working that night the closing times can vary from 9:45pm to 10pm. (They are obviously trying to get home asap and try to shut up shop fast - I don't blame them).

However, this is not fair for people like myself who work through the day and may only get a brief time in the evenings to get to the gym. We pay our membership until 10pm and so should be able to use the facilities until then.

I also never use the gym showers as I live a few minutes away, so go straight from the free weights out the door. This means in theory they should not be forcing people off the gym floor early to get to the showers if they are not going to be used.

The lights are often switched off early during these times, meaning you have to pick your way from the squat rack through a field of random barbells and dumbells to get out, hoping not to trip over something and do damage to yourself or someone else.

Does anyone have similar experiences? Do you think it is appropriate to be in the gym as long as I'm out the door by 10pm?

    /Rant ends.

I'm going to ring them later today and wanted to get my thoughts straight first.

These are my gym hours :

    mon-fri: 06.30am - 09.30pm and saturday & sundays: 10.00am - 6.00pm

I've no sympathy  - but on the other hand when they say 9:30pm, thats when they ask you to finish in the gym/pool rather than to get out.

yeah, same thing happens in mine. i'd talk to the management and i'd hope they woudn't have an issue... especially as you're out the door not heading to the showers...

alternatively, you could bring a lantern to make a point and keep going if they do knock the lights off again ;)

Latern would have helped in JS a few months ago when the ESB were upgrading power in the area. Power went and all the hamsters on the treadmills had no more TV to watch. They allowed people continute to train and had more staff on floor for safety. It was really well handled.

6pm closing on Saturday & Sunday is somewhat annoying - When I'm at a loose end on Sunday on these dark nights a session in the gym would be perfect. I have to make do with home workout.

So I rang the gym. The girl who answered the phone was one of the three personnel there last night when I raised the issue and was told to "bring it up with the manager".

She knew it was me on the phone asking for the manager. I knew it was her trying to stall. Mexican stand-off ftw.

Eventually got the receptionist manager on the phone who was pretty friendly and promised to educate all staff that the lights should remain on until 10pm, plus confirming my theory that members are allowed work out until then if not taking showers.

I had the same problem in Liffey Valley Fitness which is why I didn't go back. I too wanted to train until close to 10pm and then shower at home but the one staff member kept turning off the tvs and reminding me about closing time at 9:30. Very ignorant and customer unfriendly.

Last night on the way in as I hand my card to the receptionist:

Receptionist Girl (in sarcastic voice, and turns to snigger at the receptionish fellow who is always turning off the lights): "You know we are closed at 10pm right?"

Me: (friendly evil knowing smile on my face) "Yes, I've been coming here most nights for the past 8 months".

Anyway, they kept the lights on until closing which was great.

My gym closes at 6 on a Sunday, about 4 weeks ago I was on the rowing machine at 5.40 when the music went off, half the lights went out and a staff member came over and stood in my line of sight with his hands folded looking at me! To say I felt very uncomfortable was an understatement. He waited for about a minute then told me gym was closing. I asked him could I at least stretch, he grunted ya and watched me while I did it.

It was so embarrassing as even though I go to the gym alot, I suffer from very very red face syndrome so dont like to make eye contact with anyone let alone be watched by a staff member. Not a nice experience
