right then. so i'm too cash and time poor to commit to a gym, so i've decided to try and do some work at home i.e. fancy sit-ups i heard about on here, and some hard-core (for me at least) pushups as well as taking my five-mile bike commute a little more seriously.
question i have is this. i'm a bit of a weakling, so i was wondering if those "guidelines" about not working every day to give muscles time to repair themselves applied? i reckon i could do my, pretty basic, regimen 7 days a week before i saw any real results. should i keep it up daily, or take days (say 3 a week) off?

As a novice you mightn't be able to sustain work everyday at first, your body is unaccustomed to exercise.

Go to argos, invest €20 in a pull up bar, then invest 20 minutes three times a week in this program. That should take care of your cash/time poverty conflicting with your need to exercise.

Then, when you feel like stepping up, you can.
