Very familiar story I imagine. Once naturally fit guy has spent years being a nerd/doing nothing physical and now has a spare tire. I'm 5' 8" and between 12.5 and 13 stone in weight. I am from a family of builders so I do have reasonable muscle so it's not all fat. Used to have less than 10% body fat and I'm annoyed with myself for letting things go. I have a gym membership but never go. I do eat fairly well but other than a bit of walking I do no exercise whatsoever currently.

So... I'd like to spend the next 5 weeks in the gym toning up and losing the spare tire. I'm off on holidays and don't want to be carrying the extra weight around. I know nothing about the best ways to exercise and could do with some advice. Thanks.

Edit: Sorry should have said I'm going down to the gym tomorrow and will go through this with them. But any advice is very appreciated.

Everyone who says they have a fairly decenet diet has room for improvement. Please post your diet for critique.

As for exercise programs, as a completely untrained athlete anything will work in the short term, so we want to aim for the most efficacious/efficient workout.

    Starting Strength program - 3x/week (1-1.5hour sessions)
SimpleFit program - mainly bodyweight, scalable to your fitness levels. (~20minute sessions)
    CrossFit beginner's program - 5x/week (~30 minute sessions)
CrossFit - if you're familiar with most of the lifts, start taking the workout of day or picking and choosing interesting and challenging workouts from the literally thousands posted. This way, you're training won't become stale.

    Any more questions, just ask.

I'll get myself started tomorrow and I'll come back with diet questions.

Thank you. I'll be back with questions next week, once I'm started.
