    Hi guys,

Just to let you all know I've ressurrected the boards medics blog.

I had neglected it as I was in hospital for a bit, then I took a long holiday over the xmas period.

It's back in action now at http://twoweeksonatrolley.blogspot.com/

If any of the old posters wants to start posting again, feel free to PM me if you can't remember your password etc.

If anyone else (and I mean ANYONE-we're not fussy, and it would be good to have students, and those working in other areas of healthcare on board) would like to get involved with posting, just drop me a PM and we can tee it up.

Now that I'm more or less up and running in Oz I should be able to start posting properly now.

Does anyone know how to add a post count function into a blog, btw??

EDIT: I've added a postcounter down the bottom of the page. I'm not sure it'll make for pretty reading :P

I've put a new post up, too. It's about the adverts I saw in the states on TV, where they try and peddle medication to Joe Public.

wow, today we got a mention in dispatches from John Crippen, the biggest name in medical blogging out there :p

    www.nhsblogdoc.blogspot.com

I was wondering why we were getting so many hits from the UK!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,373 ✭✭✭Dr Galen

after a good start i too neglected the blog, but I'd be willing to give it all a second chance alright. I'll have a think and see what I can come up with over the next day or two.

Nice one on the mention too, thats an extremely popular blog

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,778 ✭✭✭tallaght01

    That would be cool, Mystik.

I've just arrived here in Oz, so I've very little to blog about at the mo as my poxy medical license hasn't come through yet. I pop into the hospital the odd time, but I'm not getting into the meaty stuff

But we seem to be getting alot of hits, so if we can keep some of those people coming back, then it would be cool.

I particularly like the fact that we have a Bulgarian and a Malaysian reader....and 2 in Brazil!!

I posted a link to it on NMM. You might get a lot more UK hits, but looks like you're getting a lot of hits already :)

Many thanks chunky, but what's NMM?

New Media Medicine. It's a very popular forum (40,832 members) based in New Zealand but designed for UK students and docs.

Thanks Chunky, I just saw it. Many thanks.

Thanks to you too Zorbah. All supprt/bookmarking mean a lot. Bear with me til I start my job in Oz though, posts might be a bit thin on the ground until next week.

    Blog updated today.

It's not much of a post, though.

It's more about the reasons why I haven't anything to write about (ie lack of work permit at the mo).

    updated x2

Boredom has gotten the better of me and I've added another post too, just now.

    an interesting blog moment....

There's a function on our site statistics toolbar, where I can see where viewers of the blog have come from. it gives the 10 most recent hits and their origin. So, a lot of hits actually come from this thread.....so it might say

    1) http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055237968 (which is this thread)

    2) www.drrant.net

    3) www.nhsblogdoc.blogspot.com

    etc etc

anyway, was looking at it earlier, and there was a www.google.com/searchid123476453 etc etc (can't remember the exact link). But I clicked the link and it took me to a google search for "The illness of lepers".....and it brought him to us!!!

    How strange.

The good thing is that a lot of our hits now are listed as "direct hit", which means the person types the address straight into their address bar, so they probably have us bookmarked.

    updated again today.

Nothing particularly exciting. Just mentioning the fact that I'm now licensed to practise in Oz.

Updated the blog today. It's 2.30am here and I've just left work, so it may not be the most coherent entry ever :p

Just noticed mystik monkey updated the blog today. Good effort, mate.

    cool stuff, man.

Listen, if you get a chance, can you go in and edit a tiny bit on your blog entry.

Just at the top, it's useful to put "posted by ain't no angel" as there's no way of the readers knowing who's posted, except for a tiny bit right at the end of the post. It's one of the flaws of the multi blogger function.

    thanks mystik

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,373 ✭✭✭Dr Galen

    yep sure.
    never thought of that alright.

    cheers

I love looking through the stats page on the blog, to find out where our readers come from.

Today somebody linked to the blog, by googling "maternity services in lanzarote".

    Bizarre!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,373 ✭✭✭Dr Galen

can only you see those stats? thats a bit mad alright. the hit counter thing shows its getting a lot of hits from around the world. its also been getting regular mentions on other blogs.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,778 ✭✭✭tallaght01

No, mystik, anyone can see the stats.

Just click on where it says "View site stats" on your right as you're viewing the blog.

That brings you to a page that gives a rundown on some of our basic blog stats.

On that page, scroll down, and you'll see a heading ont he right hand side that says "referrers". That shows where our last 10 readers have come from.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,778 ✭✭✭tallaght01

Just posted a new blog entry today. Though it may be more accurately described as a rant :p

hey tallaght, I was about to post but the email/pass no longer works for me.

    Did you change?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,373 ✭✭✭Dr Galen

Tallaght01................i smell revolution in the air!

Nurses + Dr's saying the same thing? being on the same side?

Maybe 2weeks is going to start a fashion!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭Chunky Monkey

Maybe he's spent too much time in Aussieland :) At least that's what the Aussie nurses tell me about the place.

    Hey mystik,

I read a lot fo the medical blogs every week, and your post today would be up there in a "top 5 blogger posts of the week" table.

Balanced, rational and well reasoned. Well deserved kudos in the comments section too, especially from "The angry medic", he's a very very popular blogger, so the resultant link from his site might increase the traffic flow.

    Well done.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,778 ✭✭✭tallaght01

PSI.....I changed the password. I'm trying to keep it just to people who are willing to post, say, every 10 days or so. Lot sof people had PM'd me to say they would blog, but none ever did, so I just cancelled the passwords. If you're up for a once fortnightly contribution, PM me and I'll send you the new password.

Chunky...when you gonna start blogging for us?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,373 ✭✭✭Dr Galen

thanks Tallaght01. nice to hear positive feedback alright. Slowly but surely the blog is taking off a bit.

There's regular comments and its being picked up by the more well known people out there in the blogsphere.

If only we could get a few other heads in to write and lighten the load plus broaden the appeal....................looks at chunky

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭Chunky Monkey

Aye that was a brilliant post Mystic. And the comments were very interesting. I do sometimes get the cold shoulder when I mention I'm going into medicine which means I usually say I'm working as a carer indefinitely. It's all very well to say 'I don't care what they think' but when working on a twelve hour shift, three or four days a week, it's nice to get on with the people you're working with. But I was working with some of the nicest oncology nurses recently one of whom told us about how a medical intern helped her wash a patient and came up several times to reposition them when they were very busy one night.

I've tried the blogging thing before, not too good at keeping it up. Plus not sure people will be interested in reading about this commode technician's pad changing extravaganza :) Maybe come early October when I've done my first GP placement. I'll be doing a lot more as a care assistant there too, checking BP and sats for example, and you'll have the UK perspective.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,373 ✭✭✭Dr Galen

don't go putting yourself down chunky. Your posts here are always interesting and I've a lot of respect for you. You really didn't need to be working as a carer before starting medicine. As I've said to you before it shows your getting into it for all the right reasons and I guarantee it'll stand to you when your let loose as an intern!

I'm sure you'd have something to say, and I'm sure people would find it interesting. Give it a shot sure and see what comes from it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,778 ✭✭✭tallaght01

Chunky, I think the day to day work of a carer is potentially very interesting. Would be happy to have u on board blogging about what you do.

But if you don't feel you'd keep it up, then that's fair enough.

But if you fancy giving it a shout, PM me. Or if you would rather start in october, then that's fine.

You're a good poster, though, and I'm sure you'd have a lot of interesting things to say.

Same goes for anyone else who feels they might have something to say....PM me if you want to get involved.

Just had a look at our international neo-counter on the blog homepage, which counts page views from contries around the world. We've just hit 1,000 page views form the UK since the counter was added. That would have been around late february. Not a bad hit rate. Interestingly, we're twice as popular in the UK (in terms of numbers of hits) as we are in Ireland. Obviously different populations etc, but interesting.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭Chunky Monkey

If something interesting happens at work and I'm feeling creative I'll be sure to PM you for a password Tallaght :) I'm hoping to start training in phlebotomy soon (possibly next week). Given my faint inducing fear of needles (stuck into me or anyone else) it's bound to be fun :p

Thanks for the invite and kind words guys :)

We let us know if and when you fancy joining is, chunkey.

I've just updates the blog. Just a cut and paste job from the "rough day at the office" post, so not much new.

Does talking about how I resuscitated a baby count as being a self-important post? I hate the "today I intubated a whole orphange" type blogs!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭Chunky Monkey

Hardly, unless you felt self important when you wrote it. It's part of your job.

we've been getting a LOT of hits from a popular Australian medical website called www.6minutes.com.au over the last few days.

They've named us in their "best of the rest" section in their homepage. Fair play to them. Might help pull in a few more ozzie readers.

The irish times do a weekly health supplement. I wonder if they cover blogs and the like? Might it be worth a quick email?

Did you guys know that "Dr. Thunder" is also the name of a soft drink. Close relative of Dr. Pepper apparently!

    I'm gonna sue.

No I'm not, but i have made a quiet change to the Dr. Thunder wikipedia webpage.

I reckon there should be a Two Weeks on a Trolley wikipedia page!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Thunder

Also looking through the stats for where our hits came from today. We got one reader who found us by googling "I'm not gay". Mystik, you've got a lot to answer for ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,778 ✭✭✭tallaght01

I'll update the blog this weekend. Just pretty knackered now. Been a long week.

But i was just looking at the site stats today. We have over 3,000 visits tot he blog in the last 2 months. So thanks to everyone who's visited.

Also, we had a hit today from a google search for "girly things".

Again, ain't no angel has a lot to answer for ;)

www.6minutes.com seems to be giving us a regular link, too. We're getting a lot of hits from them now aswell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,373 ✭✭✭Dr Galen

i seem to be getting a lot of the blame for the increased sucess of the log here! shouldn't i be gettin praise for my imaginative blog post titles! :)

anyways, i'm on nights this week so pretty busy I'll update next week though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,778 ✭✭✭tallaght01

well, it's gettin out of hand now, mystik.

As always, when I'm online I'll have a quick look at the stats page to see where our hits are coming from.

Tonight we have 2 classic google searches that have brought the user to us....

    1) "Is there something wrong with me?" Answer:Yes, there is, if you're reading our blog :p

    2) and this is my favourite...."I'm a man in love with another man gay".

We need to have a chat to these google people :pac:

    and the decline continues.....

Today's best google search that sent the hapless user to our blog...."fernando torres gay" lol.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,778 ✭✭✭tallaght01

I'm having a bit of a lull while on-call at work. So, I logged onto the blog, and checked our hit stats. Somehow, our hit counter has shot up overnight.

Then I had a look where they're all coming from.

It's hit after hit from www.nhsblogdoc.blogspot.com

Dr. John Crippen, the most popular medical blogger out there, has listed us in his "Britmeds" review, where he regularly reviews his favourite recent blog entries.

    Muchos gracias, John :D
