What will you be using it for?

fitness mainly, dont really like using cardio equipment in the gym so i think il try a punch bag and get a skipping rope. iv done a few martial arts before too and i want to try and get practising again!

I bought a 4ft bag in Elverys for 70 quid about a year ago and is sound as a pound. Bought the bracket in argos for about 20. Reebok Skipping rope from argos for a tenner.

I tell ya, it's probably the best workout you will ever do. I love headin out back letting off some steam and pretending the bag is my boss! Great alternative when you dont fancy the gym

I have heard people say it can get boring, and recommended against them for that reason. The rope is fine. A bag could well suit you, like Gun_Slinger, esp. as you do martial arts, I suppose you have used them before?, if not I would try and get a go with one for a while before buying and installing.

Last thing you want is another clothes horse!

I think argos do them too, not sure of quality, but they do have the no quibble 16 day return thing.

I got a stepper there, was back days later! though I still have my pushup stands that I was unsure of.

I got a PVC one from argos before I was "in the know". If you're kicking it with bare skin expect some rips before your skin toughens up. If you're just punching it, or using it with covered legs they're actually grand. I'm replacing mine soon for a 6ft leather one (to facilitate more low-kick practice).

I got the chin up bracket from argos too. Very useful but you can't have the bag up and do chin ups at the same time, which is minor problem (you get used to lashing the bag down and up again).

I find the bag a much more enticing workout than anything else tbh. I never get bored with it.

yeah iv used a bag before, and i dont think id get bored tbh, i actually find the treadmills fairly boring so i think this might be a good alternative!
i was thinking of getting a 6 foot one myself, where are you planning on getting yours khannie? argus? would it not be cheaper online?

I'm actually gonna pick one up in Thailand. I'm heading there in 3 weeks so I'll pick up an unfilled windy / twins / thaismai one there that should last me a lifetime.

Argos have a reebok one for around 110 if I remember correctly. Looked a bit skinny in the photo, but it's hard to tell. It's definitely worth dropping into mullens on capel street if you live in Dublin. They have a great range of kit.

edit: There's a place online that sell decent bags for reasonable money. The problem is usually paying for shipping (because it's heavy) or filling it yourself (getting it stuffed properly). I'll try and dig out the link for you.

edit: link. Not terribly cheap, but top quality gear.

So given the lack of a mention here, I'm getting the feeling that the yoke I picked up in Elvery's is a piece of crap then?

Probably not, given that your probably a novice and won't be putting it through its paces like someone with more experience.

Its no use getting a really nice, expensive bag if your just messing about with it. There's lots of training routines you can try with the heavy bag, try looking for a few of these and see what benefits you the most.

I've never had to buy a bag as I use the gym's equipment, but if I was buying in Dublin I'd probably buy from Mullens in Capel St. or Mick Dowlings over in Harolds Cross.

I hope thats a bit of help, maybe CowzerP or Jon might see this thread and help you further.

Oh, if I can offer advice, speaking from personal experience.

Don't risk injury to your hands by using those light 'bag mitts', they're useless IMO. Best sticking with 120z (or heavier) gloves and wrap your hands.

I have to agree with Mairt if I was getting ine in Dublin I go to Mullens or Dowlings. I have a six foot bag my girlfriend got from Mullens a few year ago. It personal preference but if you can go for a bag hook, you may have to do a bit of work reinforceing where you are going to hang it. However you can the move full circle around it as oppossed to it hanging of the wall.
