How Long does it take for protein powder to degrade?

Is it ok to prepare blended protein drinks and store in the fridge or do they have to be consumed within a certain time after mixing?

They'll be fine for a few hours, or overnight even. They just taste best when they're freshly prepared (at least that's my own experience).

Hmmm, someone here mentioned to me before that thay lost their...... protein-ness???.... after being mixed so best to be consumed right away. Hence I stopped preparing and refrigerating them before I went!

Ah well... all matters of opinion I s'pose...

rofl you mean the protein degrades? There was a fairly heated discussion abotu this a while back, but hardtrainer very correctly pointed out that even though when mixed with water the protein would begin to degrade, the composition of the amino acids would not be altered - your body would be breaking down the shey to aa's anyway so a pre-made shake really just becomes pre-digested. At least I think that was the jist of it, it was months ago :o

I've yet to see any literature on the subeject one way or another though, so for now it simply comes down to taste - fresh shakes taste good, older shakes if refrigerated taste grand, old shake sleft at room temperature or higher = a smell bad it would flare the nostrils of belezebub himself.

Leave an unwashed shaker in your sports kit over the weekend and you'll see what I mean... puke.gif

Yes, becomes vile. Be careful where you are mixing it, the powder is light and dusty, if some got onto a carpet/clothes/fabrics and then got wet it would probably be ruined with the stink.

I remember the thread, in the end I was convinced it didn't degrade, but I prefer freshly made.

I mix whey with milk and sugar free jelly to make mousse, and I have kept it 2 days in the fridge and it was fine.

I am not sure of the weights, they dont really matter much. I basically get powdered sugar free jelly and dissolve it in a small amount of boiling water. Then I put the unflavoured whey in a mini blender and whizz it up really well, it bulks up and goes frothy. It increases in volume in a blender so do not overfill. Then I add it slowly into the dissolved jelly, stirring with a whisk. Then stick it in the fridge.

The jelly tends to settle at the bottom, so 5mins later I whisk it again a little, and again 5mins after that. Nothing bad happens if it settles, just means it is a little more jelly like at the bottom, and frothy/airy on top.

If you use too little boiling water then the cold whey shake can cause it to set too quickly, again no big deal, but it comes out lumpy. I think I use around 100-200ml to dissolve in, and the shake I add is thick maybe 400ml in volume after whisking up. I think the jelly is good for 1pint.

You could always use sugar jelly for a PWO version.

I also wonder if you could add the mixture to a icecream maker, to make a frozen yoghurty mousse type thing, which would last longer, and could be made in bigger bulk.

That is possibly just a "best served" recommendation. Like decent beers might have certain temps to be served at, often above fridge temp. And why some products will have "once thawed do not refreeze", many wrongly think it is only to do with bacteria growth, but it is that it ruptures cells and makes them taste bad too.

You probably know this already but milton* gets rid of the smell. I was going to through out a shaker last week but me ma told me to use some.

I usually mix a shake before going to bed and consume it at around 4am,theonly problem i've noticed is that it tends to seperate into a liquid with a gungy bit on top,its more eating than drinking really.;)

This is down to the emulsifiers that they add to help the powder mix easily with liquid (soy lecithin is usually mist sprayed onto the proteins so that the protein powder doesn't clump together irreversibly when added to liquid). The same emulsifier also prevents the proteins from going into solution in a normal way and you get a clumping at the protein level which leads to the separation.

In chocolate flavoured whey, the cocoa is the heaviest and falls to the bottom (you can see this if you look at the bottom of a glass...remember to keep glass upright to avoid spillage ;-)) then you have the milk/water and then a frothy/foamy protein+lecithin rich scum on top. A quick stir with a spoon will set things right again.

To OP, as has been said already, if you do premix, keep it in the fridge and treat it as you would fresh milk (only fresh milk is more stable).
