I was wondering, what is the highest mileage people have put up on their cars? I just read about some guy in america who put up 1 million miles on his chevy truck. Over 300 oil changes apparently. Has anyone done better?
Is it impossible to pass 500,000 miles on Irish roads?

Cars are rarely scrapped becuase they are worn out!

I've about 245000 on a 94 corolla. She has started first time every morning :D

54000 miles when I bought the car in July 2004, 116500 miles so far and I plan to keep her running to 200k miles.

Still on the orignal clutch and suspension.

Modern cars should get 250k miles easily ( I havent converted to km's yet, I think 250k miles is 400k km's)

Diesel cars should reach that but I wouldnt expect a 1l Corsa or Micra to do it.

I had a 164 V6 which had 296,000 miles on it when I sold it. I bought it with 282,000 on it. It had had the clutch replaced at something like 200,000 miles but no other major work.

I ran it for a year in the UK but no way was I paying £1000 tax when I moved back here.

All I did to it was replace the 2 front seats.

310,000KMs on a '91 Corolla 1.5 (which is now for sale, Tralee). Only cost in 2 years driving was 4 tyres for the NCT & a service which I did myself.

have a 1994 Toyota Carina E 2.0D, with 370K miles and counting, its indestructable :D

2003 Alfa 156 2.4 JTD, with 108K miles, perfect, no trouble at all

1998 Fiat Coupe 2.0 20v Turbo, 108k miles as well, and its like it rolled out of the showroom

once cars are properly looked after they will keep going,

the problem is that most Irish drivers have no concept of what looking after a car means

248K on a 94 Vectra TD and I'm seriously considering putting a diesel in my Merc W115 petrol and see if I can get it to do this Click:D

My 1991 Corolla will hit 177,777 miles this week
Mostly ok, uses a lot of oil.

My dad had a 1989 VW jetta that had over 750,000 miles when he sold it

Low enough but my 97 Peugeot Partner van will be hitting 175,000 miles in the next 2 weeks or so.

My Almera Diesel (98) has just hit 146,000 miles, and passed the NCT last week

    no problems.

Old lexus had 200,000 miles on it, new one has 115k miles on it. Only sold the old one because I wanted a newer looking version!

    My Micra: 110,000 miles
    My parent's Mazda 626: 160,000 miles

My cousin did have a '90 Micra as well that had nearly 200,000 miles on it. It drank more motor oil than petrol at that stage!

...back from the days when VWs really DID live up to their reputation for durability...

I wonder if a decade down the road we'll be swapping stories of troublesome Toyotas whilst Kia and Hyundai top all the reliability surveys:confused::D

    Nissan primera 1.6 petrol : Over 180,000miles

Interesting topic, since my Mitsu Carisma is hitting 113k miles and I haven't got the cash to change it. Does Waterford-KK and back daily, only stopped rolling twice in the 5 years I've had her (due to a dead battery on one occasionand a dodgy clutch cylinder on another). Purring like a kitten, lovely and big and solid, hauls up a hill no problem.

Interesting comment... I don't over or under-rev mine, I'm sensible with clutch and brakes, and get her serviced every six months (i.e. after each 10k - country miles/petrol engine). Any repairs that are recommended I get done - just replaced the timing belt for example. What does your concept of looking after a car involve?

'98 Seat Ibiza 1.9D with 157k, got it in sept '04 with 114k on the clock and only thing that i had to get done apart from service items was the rear shocks. Although it will be getting a new clutch cable in the next week or so. I need to put a tiny bit of oil in it between services, but nothing serious.

I dont think id have any reservations buying a high mileage car if i was happy that it was well looked after etc.

A friend in finland had a citroen BX with over 1,000,000 kms on it. At one stage in the mid 90's peugeot held the record for the most recorded miles on both petrol and diesel engines.

Up to recently I had a 2003 Toyota Avensis 1.8 petrol and put 167k miles on it from new. My father has it now and it's still running fine for him.

Look after your car and your car will look after you.

I know of a BMW 3 series, i think its 95, not sure though, but it has 700,000 odd miles on it

My dad has a 99 Skoda octavia and has ran up (the last time i checked) 275,000 and he can drive it fairly hard when he wants, he's had minor trouble. But nothing i would call major.
I had a 01 corrolla with 98000 when i got rid of it last year, and it still felt tight as a drum! The engine was fantastic still.

eh a bread van around the back from me has near 700,000 on the clock and its a 94 , daily driven , only had the usual shocks and engine rebuild at 400,000 but other then that its ran none stop since the day he got it. My father had a m3 with 114,000 of which he put another 100,000 or so on over the space of a year and a half.... quite possab le i belive. also anyone with milage under 100,000 dont really count..... more of a " nuns " car imo

    I had a car for 10 days, A 1.9 TDI Octavia 64K 2001 - perfect car.
Spent 3 months looking for a car like it.
Learner driver ploughed into it (parked) and wrote it off. He was in an automatic car, thought he was hitting the break but hit the other pedal hard.

mental note - dont cross the road til all cars have stopped.

    Quinn paid up fast.

My dad bought a petrol Chrysler 300, then sold it to me with 60,000 miles on it. I drove it to 150,000 miles, and just sold it to my sister - we'll see where she takes it. Also, no work on powertrain at all...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,410 ✭✭✭bbam

    So far...
    C Type '79 Opel Kadett to 130k
    '86 Jetta to 135k
    '87 Starlet to 120k
    '89 Golf to 180k
    '93 Renault 19 to 160'ish
'99 Passat TDI currently at 168K

If I compare, it's more work+€€ to get the current Passat TDI there compared to my 89 Golf or even the R19..

    Current 96 Carina E 117K

172k miles on 1.2 opel corsa 2002, only parts replaced is water pump and crank sensor. original battery. not bad for a small car. Engine still pulls like a train (abeit (1.2) a very down on power train)

I sold my 01 c5 2.0hdi in jan with 200k miles on it.
No major faults in the life of the car (had a full service history when i got it)
Was still on the original clutch, engine was perfect.
Only sold it because timing belt etc was due, and more importantly i wanted a change:D

Hit 177k miles on my 02 Passat over the weekend. Bought it 6 years ago with 85k on it. It pales in comparison to some of the cars on here though...
Haven't replaced anything on it, but i've been having an issue with losing power in 5th gear the last few months. 4 mechanics have failed to sort it so might be time to cut my losses and pass it on soon!
