Be careful of Roma **** at ATM machines pushing magazines in your face and robbing your money. These cnuts are still at it, know well they will be remanded on bail.

"A teenager has been banned from being anywhere near an ATM following his arrest for theft today morning.

Judge Ann Ryan heard at the Children’s Court that in the early hours of the morning the boy (aged 16) had been arrested for theft of €250 from a man who had been making a cash withdrawal at an ATM on Dublin’s Hawkins Street.

Garda Diarmuid Fox of Store Street station said it was alleged that "the accused approached the injured party and produced a magazine. He distracted the man when he was making the withdrawal by putting the magazine up to his face."

“He then pushed buttons on the ATM and withdrew €250,” he said.

Judge Ryan remanded the Romanian teenager, who was accompanied to court by his mother, on bail until a date next month to allow him time to consider his plea."

Duplicate post #32. This topic always comes back and back.

Though they're ****ing idiots and it's advisable to throw a few slaps if they try to rob you, or sell ****e to you!

I'd change the thread title or this will get closed.

This actually happened to me. Guy came up and put the big issues over the screen as I was taking out my money, I pushed him away and shouted at him and he went off.

There was a thread on this about two weeks ago.

It's probably on the second or third page.

    Modding done.
I was in court last week and there were seven Roma people up on similar charges.
I can confirm that it's not an urban myth. It does actually happen and those charged were all released.
This same gang of assholes kept talking during the proceedings and I couldn't hear a word the judge was saying.

At least one of those there on the day was done for snatching the money as it came out of the machine. He was caught on CCTV.

WTF are these scumbags allowed out on bail. This is a different scumbag.

"The 17-year-old boy, who is originally from Romania, had pleaded guilty earlier to the theft of a man's wallet, in Dublin’s Temple Bar, last July.

The teen had earlier been remanded on bail to allow time for a pre-sentence probation report on him to be furnished to the court.

Prosecuting Garda Paul Burke, of Pearse Street station, told Judge Ann Ryan this morning that the boy had been arrested three further times for thefts."

    Yep.
I didn't hear the full judgement because the court was packed and lots of people were talking, but the guy walked out of the court that day.

I still can't work out how they get the money, if someone did that to mean they wouldn't have more than 20 seconds before I would cleave the head off them. I hate people begging at ATMS in general, I will never give them money if they are hanging around there.

Monkeyfudge you called me a racist and a liar who was posting stuff about "urban myths" the time i brought this up. People being in court getting charged with this still doesn't seem to persuade you? Maybe in fact this does go on and that your question about "what happens to the ATM card?" is the reason that all these people got off without charge because its a rock solid defense. I fear maybe these Romas have infiltrated boards.ie and are going through these posts getting invaluable legal advice.

Oh wow, Roma gypsies causing trouble yet again, how surprising!

Hasn't happened me yet though, and should one even approach me when I'm trying to take out money I'd jab a key in his face/eye and see how he likes that. Harder to navigate the sewers with your depth perception fcked!

They should really get rid of the beeping sound on ATM's though, I really can't think of a good idea for it to be there.

I had a scuffle with one. Pushed him away from the machine and ppl around started at him aswell. While on the topic any of them ever try to clean your windows on the ramps of the M50. Came over to me trying to wash them. threw water over my windows after me telling them not too, so I held my hand on the horn constantly till they pissed off. took a while, brash feckers

All you have to do is stand behind someone, wait for the money to come out (you'll hear the beeps) and then push the person out of the way and grab the money.
    It's not rocket science.

So blind people know their money is coming out of the ATM. Although just a thought, has anyone ever seen a blind person using an ATM. They'd be targets for this sort of theft.

Its not the same as the *OMG VILE SCAM ARTISTS* alarmist panic attack that started this thread and the previous one. The one where while they distract you with a magazine someone takes out an excess of money out of the atm.

    That cant be done.

being barged aside and having your money nicked is horrible and anyone who does it should be punished, but thats not what some people on here are calling b*ll**** on.

Completely off topic...I noticed yesterday that atms have brail over the buttons around the screen...how does that help when you cant read what's being said on the screen?

I assuming there some trick where the brail tells you the sum amount that can be extracted by pressing that button, but then what about when the machine ask you if you want a receipt or other such services?

Basically they wait until you are about to select the amount, they put the magazine on the screen and start talking to you while distracting you. At the same time they press the 50 euro button.

If you STILL haven't noticed somethings up they grab the 50 euro and run.

Except the machine wont give you your money until you take your card first...So I assume the person's card gets nicked aswell?

Ah yeah, didn't think about that. Never have seen a blind person at an ATM though it has to be said, surely (as said above), it'd be particularly dangerous for them. Also, they're in a massive minority and probably don't use an ATM all that much, surely for the greater good (i.e the majority) they should just get rid of the beeping.

I mean, it's pretty obvious when you're standing beside the thing when the money comes out, and it's not something I heard whilst abroad either.

Regarding the M50 gypsies, source? Would love to see it as it's a fcking disgrace if true.

In the previous thread someone supplied about 5 links to news paper stories of convictions for people using this magazines trick for want of a better word. I'm sure those articles are still available. If these people go to all the trouble of diverting your attention from the machine im sure they would have the cojones to pull your ATM card out of the machine. And whip the cash and leg it.

Right I will have a go of that after work. Has anyone got a lend of purple velvet skirt and a some clogs?

It may not be rocket science but it would be hard to do with only one person.

I had one in the shop I work passing her piece of paper around looking for money. She gave it to me and I politely declined. It's becomming an annoying trend.

I can never understand begging at ATMs. If you go to an ATM the lowest amount of money you cna get is ten euro, no one is going to give ten euro to a begger. Maybe some loose chance or if feeling surprisingly generous a fiver at most. I told this to one guy in Galway and next time I saw him he was outside Mc Donalds doing rather better.

Yes the links in question, (found here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=54970585&postcount=30) only 1 of them outlined the scam that is the current centre of debate. The others either fell into more traditional (and far more dangerous and common) forms of scamming (such as skimming machines) or did not describe a method if there was one.

So thats one link. Two if you count the one on this thread aswell.

Looking at the articles, the only thing that sticks out in my mind that can possible make it possible is that the victim in both cases had already been injured (it doesnt specify in what way or how it hindered them) but it does explain how someone can perform so much without being neither spotted nor caught.

And yet you still haven't explained how it was pulled off. You claimed to be close to the person it happened to... did you never get around to asking them?

Stealing someones money at an ATM of course can be done... but the elaborate scheme you described about had a lot of question marks over it.

EDIT: And I think claiming I accused you of being a racist and a liar is a bit much. I was questioning the details of your story as it didn't seem to add up to me, and as I stated it was very similar in tone to the urban legend type stories that typically carry a racist undertone.

Well thats fair enough. As i said in the original post it was a girl that works with my brother. I don't see them all that often and not since he told me that story. As for the simple matter of removing the card from the ATM, i think if you really want to rob someone in this manner, pulling the ATM card out of the machine would not be outside of what you call acceptable risk. I think my last post came of a little more aggressive than i'd have liked. Anyway why dont the next time you're taking money out of an ATM, see how long it would take to hit a button for an amount to withdraw, take out the card and the money and see how plausible it is for this to be carried out by lets say a pair of scalliewags. Just an idea, if you're really into it, bring a stop watch. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

pulling the ATM card out of the machine would not be outside of what you call acceptable risk.

my only confusion over this is according to one of the articles, the person was not aware that they had been robbed and was only suspicous
One of the victims became suspicious afterwards and contacted her bank which told her that a €200 withdrawal had been made.

If your card was gone, you'd be alot more then suspicous. Unless the thieves put the card back into the machine...which is then stretching to unseen hieghts of plausability.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

Might even make a little film out of it. Could be an interesting project.

The way I'd see it being done is to watch out for someone withdrawing a large quantity like €250. They are prompted to remove their card before the cash comes out... and it's when they are removing the card and putting it in their pocket or wallet that your moment of opportunity arises and you can distract and grab the cash.

I seen so many Roma vs ATM threads now but hey, anything to keep people aware I guess. And they're not just in the East, we have had some incidents here in the West too.

Girl (13) on ATM scam charges

    By Tom Tuite
    Wednesday May 02 2007

A 13-YEAR-old girl, facing nine theft charges over an alleged ATM machine scam, has been remanded on continuing bail pending directions from the DPP.

The Romanian girl, who lives in west Dublin, arrived in Ireland just over three months ago and in that time has been the subject of a number of arrests for stealing money from people at ATMs. She had been charged at the Dublin Children's Court with nine counts of theft of €200 from people at ATMs in Dublin city centre.

These alleged offences happened at bank machines on O'Connell Street, Grafton Street and at Stephen's Green, between February 20 and March 10 last.

On April 3 last the girl had been further charged with two more offences, for stealing €200 from a person on O'Connell Street, on February 14 last, and the same amount from another at Grafton Street, on March 9 last. Judge Bryan Smyth remanded her on bail until June 12. The bail has strict conditions stating that she must not loiter near any ATM, and that she must obey a curfew between 8pm and 8am daily.
