You could check out a few of the following -

    - Squarepusher
    - Autechre
    - Amon Tobin
    - Luke Vibert
    - The Orb
    - Venetian Snares
    - Plaid

His stuff is really diverse (see the other thread), what aspects of his music appeal to you most?

Really dose depend on what aspect of Aphex's Music you like, albums like Druqs show the two distinct sides of what he can accomplish. If your like me and prone to the harder, fast-paced end of the spectrum, with articulate drum coding, squelchy acid lines and breaks then checkout some of these artists bellow.

The Tuss - This is probably Aphex Twin under a different name, an Album and Ep have been released and should be picked up swiftly.

The Flashbulb - Get Kirlian Selections or Some of his stuff under the moniker 'Acidwolf' is also class.

Datach'i - Great instrumentals with some finely produced breakcore. (if you like Venetian Snares, Check him out) http://www.myspace.com/datachi

µ-ziq (pronounced Music) - Owner of legendary Planet Mu label, also worth checking out the other artists on the label.

Mike Dredd - Acid techno with no frilly bits, straight 4/4 stuff, he used to release along side Aphex Twin in his early days in the Universal Indicator series realsed back in the early 90's, So if you like early Aphex's releases check out his 'Kosmic Kommando' sets.

Tim Exile - Creator of some of the most innovative Native Instruments software, which has contributed to the excitement of his live shows. Produces tracks on the fly using a mic, a sampler and well re-hearsed filters, for basslines and fills, If you get a chance to see LIVE do. Checkout his album ' Pro Agonist'

Cylob - Another contributer to 'Braindance' music and is on Aphex's label 'Rephlex Records'. He has many releases and sets to download for free on his website > http://www.cylob.com/home_a.html

WISP - Another explorer in the field of Acid & Amens, with some really nice spaced out synths, gluing the mayhem together.

a few other artists that id recommend, but aren't specifically similar to Aphex Twin

Ceephax Acid Krew (Squarepusher's older brother)
Chis Clark (now known as just CLARK on WARP records)
Electromecca (One of my favorite artists at the moment, ridiculously broken up, mid-fi electro, verging on breakcore in places, but stays trues to hip hop pacing and rhythms)
Dmx Krew - owner of Breakin' Records
    Monster X
    Subjex
    Sytheme
    Milanese

sorry for not getting back to this sooner.

Selected ambient works is my favorite album if that helps some

Based on the preference of SAW, I would say definitely check out early Autechre such as the following -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/2493

    http://www.discogs.com/release/2494

    http://www.discogs.com/release/2495

Not sure about anything more recent.

Definitely get these two early Warp compilations if you don't have already -

    http://www.discogs.com/release/549

    http://www.discogs.com/release/2964

Will suggest more again if you like

    The Black Dog - Bytes,
    Spanners,
    Music for Adverts
Best to find these on bleep.com as they are deleted now but good price on bleep, 6.99 euro for a 320kbps download
The New Autechre would be good to go with also a slight return to earlier
    compositional styles.

    Beautiful album.

OP go to http://www.warprecords.com/ and have a scout around there.
    Tons of good stuff.

    Anyone like scanner?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 26 charlesquinn

Yea scanner is the business. Id also recommend checking out Brothomstates - Claro, Oval - 94 Diskont and possibly LFO, in addition to the other recommendations, and definately Clark.

Along the lines of Clark theres also Jackson and his Computer Band. But then thats definately straying away from SAW territory.

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,322 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

Yeah, defo agree on Scanner and Oval (Oval took a few listens to click though)....need to check out Brothomstates myself, been recommended a few times to me now.

Chris Clark is excellent, I love Body Riddle, spectacular album...have not bought Turning Dragon yet but believe its quite different to previous work.

This site looks excellent too for online purchases -

    www.boomkat.com

    Anyone bought from them?

I second the recommendation above: Venetian Snares. Excellent.

    Also, Check out Freescha!!

I have since got Turning Dragon, quite heavy but a must-have album, brilliant.

Also got a loan of a promo copy of the new Black Dog album 'Radio Scarecrow'. Amazing album, due out on the 7th of April and should be an essential purchase for all :) Definitely going to be a top album for 2008.

Any of you guys know of any pub/bar in Dublin that plays the sorta music discussed on this thread on a regular basis? I've been up here for about a year now and have not yet found a regular spot to go to. Any input would be great.

Yes! Aside from his consistently excellent music he once gave me a cool Githead badge so he's a cool guy in my book.

Kaboogie in Traffic on Saturdays is good, but mostly pushing Dubstep at the moment Website

If you check their myspace and look at there friends, you'll find other promoters that are bringing over similar acts.

Also go into city discs in temple bar they usually have posters up for all the interesting gigs going on in the city.

I'll take this opportunity to plug my own clubnight (Fun Night Out), which i only started up and run very sporadically. Last month i had Ebola and Ed Chamberlain over, and hopefully next month (although nothing has been confirmed yet) Ill have Monster X and Subjex from Bedroom Research over to play. If you haven't heard them before, look them up and have a listen and if you like, come along.

Interesting, I actually downloaded a load of music from the Bedroom Research website before but had forgotten to listen. Must do now that I am reminded!

Do you use different venues for your own night?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 26 charlesquinn

Cheers Spyro..Il be sure to check out your night next time round.

I've seen ebola a while back, some good stuff there.

Speaking of Dubstep, did anyone check out Boxcutter and co. in Dame Lane on saturday night?

Mostly McGruders on Thomas street these days, It's one of the only affordable venues left in the city.

i didn't personally make it, but my mate did, he said it was interesting, but not as good as Boxcutter is on his solo productions.(i trust his opinion) He was palying with a drummer, whilst he had an MPC 1000 which was manipulated live and a Roland 202 for some acid. Fair play to him he's always tryin to inject a live element into his performances, i remember seeing him over a year ago in the sugar club, playing Bass guitar over his productions. However these live performances seem more like attempts or experiments, rather then rigorously rehearsed routines. Love his new album though, Glyphic especially the Afx-esqe track - Bloscid (weh-hey were back onto Aphex Twin)

I've wondered about that place actually, it's just by my gaff but i've not been there. I've walked passed before and have heard tunes coming out of there but curiosity never got the better of me.

I was there also, but somehow missed his performance! I was about halfway back and couldnt really see the stage through the crowd. The sound was quite poor tbh, and when he came on it must have gone straight over my head.

Can anyone recommend particular releases by Amon Tobin for me? Tobin has a huge back catalogue (I have out from outwhere).

Interesting thread so I wouldnt worry too much about the bumping. Have been downloading lots of this music recently.

Out From Out Where is my fave followed by Supermodified. Foley Room has also gotten some good recommendations (including a few in this forum I think) so it might be worth checking out too.

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,322 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

Yeah Foley Room is a very good album - worth looking out for the release that includes the DVD with footage etc of how he made the album with found sounds - for example, percussion made from recorded sound of factory machinery.

Also, I may have mentioned Kettel before but I should do so again - Brilliant producer and actually a preference for me now over Richard James  ... Check out some samples on his myspace, amazing stuff.

I don't think he has a bad album really, they're all great. If you like DJ Shadow's trip-hoppy sound go for Bricolage to start you off, or if you prefer a heavier sound go for his later records. Permutation is great also, there's a track on it called Nightlife that has one of my favourite drum loops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,771 ✭✭✭✭fits

Wow so many. I like both trip-hoppy and heavier sounds and have ambient music right through to fairly hard techno on my mp3 player. Was impressed by 'out from out where' but was unsure what to go for next.

Will definitely check Kettel out also. Have heard of him alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,805 ✭✭✭Setun

    Nightlife - Amon Tobin (Permutation)

Gotta love that drum loop with those little effects thrown in. If you like that track, get Permutation. There's a great voice sample taken from Eraserhead on the first track aswell. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,771 ✭✭✭✭fits

Didnt get a chance to listen to this before now.

I like a lot. He's deadly isnt he? Really different.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,805 ✭✭✭Setun

Yep, he's pretty damn good alright. I was addicted to his music for about 4 or 5 months last year, just kept flicking around his discography. Not a bad track in there, no joke. It's hard to say what album to get first, but chronological order isn't a bad way to go if you want to pick them all up, it's interesting to listen to how his sound develops. But if you want to jump in at the deep end, maybe go for Supermodified as that's when he really establishes his own sound. Enjoy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,771 ✭✭✭✭fits

Its quite funny the way you stick on a track of his and have absolutely no idea what to expect coming out of those speakers :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,805 ✭✭✭Setun

I know, even when you think you know the tune, some unusual ambient interlude shocks you out of passive listening again. :D I find it hard to believe that he actually samples though. I mean, it sounds like every little audio snippet is written and recorded specifically for the track and not "borrowed" from the history of recorded sound.

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,322 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

I haven't bothered with Bricolage yet... I may be wrong, but I feel that it will very much represent the early typical stereotype sound of Ninja Tunes which I got really sick of back then. I think Amon moved on to much more experimental and darker sound after that - now, I base this opinion on the likes of Stoney Street and Easy Muffin... which are good tracks but imo, stereotype early Ninja Tunes. Any reasons why I should invest in this album?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,805 ✭✭✭Setun

Chomp Samba off Bricolage is suitably mental, and a hint at what was to come. :D It is a kind of trip-hoppy esque sound in general on that album, although I still think Amon brings enough new ideas to it to make it different and enjoyable.

  • Subscribers Posts: 8,322 ✭✭✭Scubadevils

I probably should get it, given that its his first and all is a good enough reason! Haven't listened to any of his other albums for a while, must dig them out for the car... had been a favourite there. Although, can induce some road rage, especially the likes of 'Rhino Jockey' Great track though...
