I've started exercising again and one of my aims is to walk up the stairs without any effort at all, I'm not saying I find it at all hard to walk up the stairs lol but you know how you feel it in your legs, I don't want to feel that at all - is this a reasonable expectation ?

Sure. I don't see why not. I take my stairs 3 steps at a time with almost no effort. Squats and lunges would help a lot. You should have a look for a video on how to squat properly. It's not as straightforward as dropping down then standing back up.

Have you any goal beyond that? At what point would you feel like you'd achieved your goal?

hmm I'd like to lose 5 pounds of fat, I'd be pleased with that, maybe 7 even and get up to an hour of exercise a day, I'm just on the exercise bike now though and it can get pretty boring, I'm doing 45 minutes at the mo and thats pushing it so maybe an hour is a bit much, though ill get a 60 minute playlist on my ipod which will help, a little bit of fast paced music does wonders

Sounds boring tbh. Look for some variation, or possibly a sport that you like.
