Pssh. The thread title, according to tradition, is supposed to be "Again, [again, again, again] it begins...[SU elections]".

Well if any of the mods want to change it, go nuts.

Nope myself (Eoin Moore) and Hilary makes two. Not sure if any of the other candidates up there post or are members....I've been waiting in fear for this thread to be started up. I know I was doing some pretty good bitching on here last year about the Union so I guess I can only expect the same from now on....!!

AS USUAL, you can comment and put your views forth as candidates, but not "VOTE FOR ME" posts on the forum. thanks lads.

good luck to all of you, its a hard couple of weeks and i wish yee all the best of luck. I'd hope yee keep it all civil, and i hope you all enjoy it. its a fun couple of weeks, so have a bit of fun in between the campaigning.

I'll take the other side of it... the two weeks of campaigning are simply insane. Get lots of vitamins into you, I was physically sick in the middle of my campaign when running over to speak to the nurses (heh, I know). It's odd hearing your name called out at the formal announcement of the names, odder handing out manifestoes with your name & face on it, oddest when you're in the count room and you can physically see the people who voted for you. You will probably end up like Robert Redford in 'The Candidate' at the end of it.

    But it's definitely an experience.

    Good luck all.

Since when have they been confined only to this time of year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

While eavesdropping in the laundromat just there, I overheard that this year, societies are allowed tout SU candidates. As in, if a majority of committee members agree on who to advocate, then an email could be sent around to their members encouraging them to vote for hilar... I mean particular candidates. Posters could be put up, leaflets distributed etc.

    Any truth to this?

I hope not - makes a mockery of the whole process..

Anyway, Hugh doesn't need such help!

Nope not a lot of truth to that really.

Societies are not allowed to tout candidates, even if all the committee members agree.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

Phrase that slightly more correctly Nikolai:

Candidates are not allowed to have themselves touted by societies :)

all these elections are making me feel old :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 676 ✭✭✭ilovemybrick

Not true. Specifics loopholes were found in specific rules. As far as the EC are concerned they were un-closable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 312 ✭✭manicmonoliths

ah loopholes! You've gotta love em'

What would happen if a society did that though? Who would be punished? The society or the candidate?

The candidate could technically deny any knowledge of the email list.
(Even with if he/she is friendly with a certain society;))

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,311 ✭✭✭xebec

Ah, the joys of finding ways around the EC. What were the rules and the loopholes?

From my memory, some of the things candidates get up to are quite innovative and even funny, however the EC always wins :p Candidates' deposits are there for a reason, and some of the candidates have absolutely no intention of finishing the race with more than 10% of it remaining.

On a side note, I feel a little out of the loop this year, I only know 4 of the candidates and two of them are running for education. Meh, this things get less interesting when you've heard the same thing for the 5th year...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 232 ✭✭nikolaitr

Regarding the Societies backing candidates, there is no loop hole. Societies can't back candidates. Simple as. Or as Crash put it candidates can't get societies to back them.

Any sort of of publicizing of candidates by societies is a serious matter and will be investigated and punished accordingly. If you were at the post nomination meeting you will have heard that some of the candidate raised concerns about the rule yet it was made clear that the EC will be watching out for any sort of "loop holeing" of this very closely.

Nikolai i was at the meeting.
I was also at EC meetings for the last 18 months.
    I found the loophole.
I do know what im on about.

    Semantics are my forté

    Ah Eoin its yourself.

I think calling it a loop hole is pretty strong. There is possibility of abuse, yes, but like it has been said already it will be closely watched for. But I have a feeling this conversation will be circular and I say we wait and see if anything happens with said "loop hole".

I believe I was on the Electoral Commission once. It was the year the Hist auditor sent an e-mail to their membership list criticising a candidate for President. Entertaining, to be sure, but it gave us a headache figuring out who, if anyone, we should discipline for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,311 ✭✭✭xebec

Jees, I don't remember that one. And I was on the same EC! My abiding memory of that campaign is the problem of people using bebo...

Funny indeed, though I'm curious - given that you can't exactly discipline anyone for that (given that I can picture the reaction of the auditor in question if the EC fined him), what's to stop current society heads form doing the same?

Viciuos rumours spread fast. Student politics, which ever way things pan out, I'll learn a lot from it. I wasn't able to attend council last night so I guess somebody jumped the gun!

I'll be here till the last dog dies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

WAIT WAIT WAIT, hold on a second. I didn't realise dog death was required for these elections should be held. This is a disgrace, we should protest.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 561 ✭✭✭paperclip

So, what did you guys think of your reviews in the TN? Fair? Do you wish they'd covered more? Were they biased?
I'm pleasantly surprised by the faces behind the boardsie nicknames.

By the way, who's the third boardsie candidate?

Mmm not quite. I'm a bit too caught up in the whole US Presidential nomination race at the moment. It's a famous quote from Bill Clinton in 1991 primary season about not stopping etc....sorry.

The articles were very balanced I thought. Didn't seem to take much from the interviews though, a lot was based on the general mantra of what we said. I think they only directly quoted me 3 times or so.... To be honest I don't think most people noticed, or at least skipped. I asked a few if they had read/ seen it and they said they hadn't...

Yep with Bartley Rock (Education officer) being the secretary. The role of Chair of Council and Chair of EC were merged last year and is now a role which must be held for two years....

Ooooh, tonight's the night when everyone runs around like headless chickens...

Edit: Are the EC doing the manifesto website again this year? If not, can someone put up a link to each person's election website from tomorrow? Much obliged - from a 'retired hack'.

That's because the Electoral Commission know all and see all. We are the Alpha and the Omega...

Seriously though, it was because the candidates and their campaign teams were very civil and co-operative. So a very big 'Thank You' to them all. It's been good so far and I wish everyone involved the best of luck!

The Longxxxxx (can't remember the rest) guy for ENTS is running a very popular campaign. I wonder if he will fulfil his promises...

We need to see more of the candidates though- right now they seem very quiet and behind the scenes. A few marriage proposals might sway my mind from one to the other...see how easily I am manipulated?!?

What's with the soviet chic thing though? Everyone seems to be doing it though and if my memory serves me, it was also a theme for last year.
    WE WANT GLORIOUS POSTERING!

Hey question for these EC types:
What are the rules about candidates giving gifts to their campaign team members? Couldn't they technically be considered payment? Which should then fall under an expense..... What if the 'payment' isn't a gift but a favour of some sorts? It's a bit wishy washy I know...

In fairness, the socialist/communist/pravda-franz-ferdinand-album-cover thing is hackneyed beyond belief in student circles. It's irritating.

Is the guy actually a socialist/communist/whatever?
